Lynn HobbsLibrary DirectorSometimes there are things in my job that make me feel like I’m in college again. Writing thelong-range plan is one of those things. Now I don’t mean creating the long-range plan. That’s a collaborative effort. I mean writingthe long-range plan. Sitting in front of a computer, with a blank Word screen staring back at me,and a pile of notes to synthesize into something that not only makes sense, but provides actualstrategic direction for the years ahead. It took a long time, but it’s done, and we feel pretty good about it. We took a close look at theneeds of our community, the whole time remembering that our sole reason for existing is toserve you. We have identified six areas of focus for the next five years.Support the growing immigrant population by providing collections, programs, and servicesspecifically designed to meet their unique needs.Establish consistent, recognizable branding throughout the library’s communication andutilize the brand in increased promotional efforts.Evaluate and update the library’s technology infrastructure to enhance the patronexperience, both inside and outside the library.Offer support for individuals experiencing loneliness by offering social opportunities andcreative outlets. Build upon the existing partnership with the school corporation to provide additional, needed services to local students.Explore the feasibility of a second library location to address the needs of the growing ruralpopulation. In the coming months and years, you will see the library working towards making a realdifference in these areas. We have some lofty goals. We are literally hoping to transform yourquality of life. Whether it’s enhancing technology beyond what you’d expect, helping newresidents feel more included, or providing opportunities for everybody to learn, create, andmake social connections, we’re on it.Don’t worry. We won’t get distracted with the latest and greatest. We will still provideeverything you expect to find at your local public library. Your next great read. The answers toyour questions. And, of course, storytime. Yep. We’ll keep doing all of that, and our goal is toknock it out of the park.FROM THE DIRECTOR2
