Virginia Distinguished Purple Star SchoolThe Virginia Purple Star Designation is awarded to military-friendly schools that have demonstrated a majorcommitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. The Virginia Department of Education’s Military Student Support Process Action Team (MSSPAT)formed by the Virginia Department of Education, reviews all school applications for the award. Finalapproval on awards is made by members of the Virginia Council on the Interstate Compact on theEducational Opportunity for Military Children. Awards are made annually, and schools mustreapply every three years.Peninsula Catholic High School was awarded the Purple Star Designation in 2019 from the VirginiaDepartment of Education as a military-friendly school after meeting the rigorous qualificationcriteria. This designation recognizes that Peninsula Catholic is dedicated to supporting military-connected families to ensure a smooth transition into the PC family. “Our candidate came to PCHS six years ago as a new teacher. She brought with her a boundlessenthusiasm and energy that made her amazingly effective in her job. Her colleagues had thisto say about her: “Peggy is a strong, dedicated teacher. Student AwardsPresident’s Award for Educational ExcellenceThe purpose of the President’s Award for Educational Excellence is to recognize academic success in the classroom.To be eligible for this award, students must earn a grade point average of 3.5 and an 85th percentile score in math orverbal on a standardized achievement test such as the PSAT/NMSQT. In addition,she is the president of the Spanish Honor Society. She has received the Citizenship Award and was selected to attend theHOBY Leadership Conference and the Josten’s Leadership Conference.Isabella graduated in June with a 4.56 GPA and will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall to pursue a degree in InternationalStudies on the pre-law track.William (“Billy”) is an effective leader who exemplifies that fact not just in hisacademics, but through his additional commitments to his faith, athletics, andcommunity service. “Isabella is as well-rounded a student and community member as we have ever had atPeninsula Catholic High School,” stated PCHS Principal Heather Whitchurch. She isa Student Ambassador, a Retreat Team member, a Liturgical Team member, a GreenClub and Interact Club member and an Honor Code Council member. She was thefreshman class president and a member of the following honor societies:He is a member of the National Honor Society, Rho Kappa Social Studies Honor Society, and president of the Mu AlphaTheta Mathematics Honor Society. He has received the Presidential Award for Educational Excellence. He is a member ofthe Liturgical Team and was the Retreat Team Coordinator. Outside of school, he is an altar server at Our Lady of MountCarmel, a servant leader for LifeTeen, and a BSA Troop 242 Senior Patrol Leader. He is also recognized as a Life Scout.In athletics, this young man has been the MVP for Varsity cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field.He has received the Honor and Armor award from PCHS for participating in all three seasons of athletic activities each year.Additionally, he is an All-State 2-time conference MVP and 2-time conference champion. Billy, the PCHS Class of 2024 valedictorian graduated in June with a GPA of 4.82. and will be attending the MassachusettsInstitute of Technology (MIT) on a full-ride Naval Reserve Officer Training Corp (NROTC) Marine Option Scholarshipwhere he’ll study Mathmatics.

Saint Vincent de Paul Service AwardThe Saint Vincent de Paul Service Award is presented to students who haveperformed between 150-250 hours of service to the Church and Community. Known as the great Apostle of Charity, St. Vincent was at one time a slave to theMoors, he helped revive the priesthood and founded a religious communitydedicated to the poor. St. Vincent is the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Richmond. The 2023-2024 recipients of the Saint Vincent de Paul Service Award areMinyoung Claire Jeon, Alyssa Pongracz, and Audrey Wienhoff.The Servant of God Frank Parater AwardThe Servant of God Frank Parater Award is given to those students who have givenover 100 hours of service. Frank Parater was a seminarian in the Diocese of Richmondknown for his exceptional devotion and service. When he died while in seminary, histestament was found. The following is an excerpt from it, now entitled: Act ofOblation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. "I have nothing to leave or to give but my life and this I have consecrated to the SacredHeart to be used as He wills...This is what I live for and in case of death what I die for.…Since my childhood, I have wanted to die for God and my neighbor. Pope Francis AwardThe Pope Francis Award is presented to students who have completed over 250hours of service to the Church and Community. The 2023-2024 recipient of thePope Francis Award is Madeline Weser.“Works of love directed to one's neighbor are the most perfect external manifestation of the interior grace of the Spirit….”Pope Francis in Evangelii Gaudium"Let us love God; but at the price of our hands and sweat of our face."Saint Vincent“I shall be of more service to my diocese in Heaven than I can ever be on earth." Frank ParaterBishop’s Award for ServiceThe Most Reverend Francis Xavier DiLorenzo, former Bishop of Richmond, had a deep love of Catholic educationdemonstrated by much of his ministry being spent as a teacher or as a chaplain in two Catholic high schools, ImmaculataCollege and as rector of St. Borromeo seminary. His Excellency, Bishop Knestout, continues to express his support andpresence to our students through the Bishop’s Award for Service which celebrates young men and women who giveexceptional service to Church and Community. These two athletes are both teammates and team leaders. As a member oftheir teams, they allow themselves to be coached—they really listen to theconstructive criticism offered by others in order to improve their play.Though certainly, they each stand out in their respective sports—they neverforget they are part of a team. As leaders, they are dedicated, and thisdedication is an inspiration to their teammates who recognize that hardwork yields results. The ability level of the teams has been elevated becauseof their strong leadership. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, thepositive attitude, sportsmanship, and sense of fair play epitomize what PCexpects of its athletes. The 2023-2024 recipients of the Coach’s Award are:Allison Gaus and Jordan Jones.The Honor and Armor AwardThe Honor and Armor Award is awarded to senior student-athletes who played one sport each seasonwhile maintaining a cumulative GPA of 3.25 or higher. Female Scholar-Athlete of the YearOur female scholar-athlete of the year has been a part of the cross country and trackand field teams for the last four years at PCHS. Her quiet demeanor gives way to hercompetitive nature on the track. This athlete is part of the first-ever ladies' team tocompete at Indoor Adidas Nationals, Penn Relays, and Nike Outdoor Nationals allin the same year. Her dedication to fighting through setbacks has made her aninspiration to her fellow team members. She leaves PC with school records in the300m, the 400m, the 4X4, and the Sprint Medley Relay. This student also shinesacademically. Her current GPA is 4.6 and she will be attending the University ofVermont with plans to major in Environmental Science.The 2023-2024 recipient of the Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is: MaryCabell.Male Scholar-Athlete of the YearOur male scholar-athlete of the year has been a part of the cross-country team andthe track and field team during his career at PCHS. He started on the track and fieldteam during his sophomore year and worked his way up from a slightly below-average track athlete to the powerhouse he has become. His work ethic and vocalleadership have been the backbone of our PCHS Track and Field team. He willleave PC as part of the first boys' team to compete at the Indoor Adidas Nationals,leading the largest boy's team to compete at Penn Relays, and the Nike OutdoorNationals. This student holds school records for the 800m, 1,000m, the 3,200m, the1 mile, and the 2k steeplechase.Academically, this student will graduate from PCHS as the class Valedictorian for2024 with a GPA of 4.82. The 2023-2024 recipient of the Male Scholar-Athlete ofthe Year Award is: William Driscoll.Scholar-Athlete of the Year AwardEach year we honor two Senior student-athletes (one male and one female) with what is considered to be one of the highestawards in the school. The Scholar-Athlete Award is given to Seniors who have distinguished themselves, not only athletically,but academically as well. Special Athletic Achievement Mary CabellWilliam DriscollFor the second consecutive season, Luke Murray earned All-American status atNationals finishing in 7th place, making him the first student-athlete in PCHShistory to have earned this award.Congratulations, Luke, we are so proud of you! This school year, Logan Hicks won consecutive double golds in Jiu Jitsu, whichincluded 13 submission wins and 0 points scored against him. He was selected as oneof 16 teens from the United States and Brazil to participate in the ADCC YouthWorld Championships @ T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas this August.Congratulations, Logan! WrestlingBasketballVolleyballAthletics Signing DayThe Athletic Program at Peninsula Catholic prides itself on welcoming student athletes from all walks of life to compete onone of our 21 athletic teams. The inclusive nature of this program attracts more than 65% of the PC students to join at leastone sports team with many of them active on two or more teams. Regardless of the sport, they collaborate with theirteammates to help improve both their individual and team performance. Each year, PC has several very talented athletes thatcatch the eyes of collegiate scouts resulting in a scholarship opportunity for them to continue playing their sport at thecollegiate level. Being an athlete at Peninsula Catholic not only requires perseverance and dedication on the team, it alsocommands discipline to succeed in the classroom to remain in good academic standing in order to practice and compete. Weare proud of their accomplishments as they excelled in all areas to garner attention at the collegiate level.This year, we had seven student-athletes secure a college signing opportunity. The 2024 recipients of the Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Cord are:PCHS Booster Club ScholarshipsEach year the booster club recognizes seniors whose parents have committed tovolunteering countless hours supporting the Knights of Columbus, council 5480. In recognition of this commitment to the Booster Club, we are pleased to award theBooster Club Scholarship to Billy Driscoll. Billy is receiving this award because hisfather, Pete Driscoll, has worked countless hours over the past five years at Bingo andon the Booster Club Board of Directors. The procedure for selecting a DAR Good Citizen is for theschool to select one senior who has demonstrated, to an outstanding degree, thequalities of a good citizen: dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Onlyone student per year may be honored as a school's DAR Good Citizen and ouraward winner was honored at a lunch back in April where she received a certificate,DAR Good Citizen’s pin, a bouquet of flowers, and a check for 300 dollars. Gately (Peninsula Catholic High School Class of1969), passed away April 24, 2023. He graduated fromPeninsula Catholic High School in 1969 after which he spentmore than 54 years in the communications and technologyindustry. He lived a life centered on service and teamwork, asseen in his longtime support and leadership at PeninsulaCatholic High School where he served on the AdvisoryBoard.James Patrick Healy, Sr., 86, of Yorktown, passed away onSunday, November 5, 2023. Jim was born in Ashland,Kentucky, where he attended Holy Family High Schoolbefore moving to Newport News, where he attended TheNewport News Apprentice School. After high school, he wascalled to serve in the U.S. Army and later earned his B.A.from Christopher Newport College. He went on to spend aremarkable 50-year career with Newport News Shipbuilding.28Jim was deeply involved in his community, serving on numerous educational andcommunity boards, including the Boys and Girls Club of the Virginia Peninsula,The Knights of Columbus Council #5480, and the Virginia Sports Club.
