October 2021 Tishrei Cheshvan 5782 parksynagogue org 216 371 2244 facebook com parksyn FROM THE PRESIDENT A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN RATNER A s we look ahead to the New Year and continue to adapt to the shifting exterior landscape we have some exciting news to share with you about our future plans for Park Synagogue Anyone driving down Shaker Boulevard sees proof that our campaign to Ensure Our Future has taken root and as we continue to reach out to all of you your response to support our vision for our reimagined campus has been so heartening I thank all of you who have contributed before and after our Campaign launch in June you are the reason we have been able to break ground and we look forward to sharing our progress with you getting your input and asking for total congregational support We have made great strides toward our 32 000 000 campaign and are now over 30 000 000 but we need all of us together to reach our goal Side by side with our planning for our future has been our planning around the campus that embodies our past After looking at many alternatives for our Cleveland Heights campus our Executive Committee and Board of Trustees have unanimously endorsed an approach that epitomizes our ideas for the best use of that campus as we transfer all our activities eastward and we are excited to share this approach with all of you We have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with a local development group Sustainable Community Associates SCA whose interest in the preservation restoration and reuse of our Mendelsohn sanctuary is paramount Tied to that is the rest of their initial vision of a campus which preserves greenspace continues the use of the Mikvah and which looks at the best use of the developable land Toward that end they have proposed a yearlong planning process working with architect Jack Bialosky to develop a Master Plan for the campus along with a historic preservationist They will in turn be working with local foundations and arts groups and potential users of the space while also performing the market research to establish who best can use this property incorporating the City of Cleveland Heights in this process They will also work to seek public and private funding to help with the creation of a sustainable financial plan for the whole campus Their consultant for the project is Richard Baron an experienced leading national developer in affordable housing who headed the transformation of the Mendelsohn synagogue located in St Louis into a thriving community cultural arts center At the end of the SCA planning process their goal is to be the master developer for the project which they hope will reflect our values incorporate the interests of a broader community of users and will be a model of historic re use of significant architectural landmarks If their plan is viable as they intend the Park Board will then make the final decision to go forward and our community will have use of the sanctuary for our High Holiday services in a reinvigorated campus Park s investment in this process is one of optimism and hope we will keep the campus going for one more year to achieve the best solution possible before we shed our financial obligation SCA has already independently done a great deal of due diligence and exploration with the property with external groups and with potential funders for the Master Plan As part of their own research they spoke to Steven Litt Art Architecture Critic for the Plain Dealer who released an article to the general public on September 17th followed up by The Cleveland Jewish News at the same time so that the whole community knows of our hopes aspirations and planning process The synagogue Board vote reflects the goal we had hoped for all along to build a revitalized campus at Park East to become the new Park Synagogue and to preserve honor and see a revitalization of our past If this goal is reached we will cede our financial responsibility we will be able to use the sanctuary for our High Holidays and we will have participated in a grand vision for a different future We will be giving SCA information to support their process and they will be reporting back to a committee of the Board so you will all be informed of their progress Although this is dependent on their putting together all the complex pieces of a project of this magnitude they are deeply excited about this project and have demonstrated the capability to execute We are excited to give them this time to provide them with every opportunity for our mutual success Susan Ratner Park Synagogue President susratner gmail com
