October 2019 Tishrei Cheshvan 5780 parksynagogue org 216 371 2244 facebook com parksyn OUR VOYAGE CONTINUES A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT SUSAN RATNER A s the new President of Park Synagogue I am truly grateful for this opportunity to usher in this Jewish New Year with you My family has been part of the Park Synagogue community for almost 100 years worshipping in the three different locations that we have called home Through both our life cycle events and the smaller more intimate events that connect members of a community Park Synagogue has been a rich and meaningful part of our family s life I have been fortunate to combine my professional career as a social worker with many of Cleveland s finest Jewish institutions first working with parents and children at the JCC family center and preschool then at Bellefaire JCB s Jewish Day Nursery JDN and most recently launching the Monarch School for children with autism As a volunteer I have just completed a term as chair of the Mt Sinai Foundation a philanthropic and health care policy star in our community As I begin my tenure as President I am reminded of the most important thing I learned in graduate school in social work start where the client is I have applied that to every important step I have taken both personal and professional and it seems particularly applicable now as we act on the completed surveys planning evaluation and input from so many of you and put into action our vision for the future As a community I know we have questions about planning for the future including managing our various facilities As a congregation we will work together to take action on the work that has been done to this point This includes moving forward with the expansion of the Park East site to ensure we have a space that meets the ever growing and changing needs of our community I am excited to share that we will have the opportunity to connect with Mark Simon the architect of Park East so he can share all of his thoughts on how best to meet our needs while maintaining the integrity of his original design We will simultaneously evaluate all the options for our Cleveland Heights site and our historic sanctuary knowing full well the complications of dealing with a historic meaningful but financially unsustainable property This conversation will be just one of many we anticipate happening over the next several months We will provide an email address and hold meetings so you can ask your questions and give your comments as you have them and we will give information in person in groups and one to one There is a lot of work yet to be done but I can promise you that we will be here to listen and to answer all questions to the best of our ability in an open and transparent manner I am honored to serve as the President of the congregation during this exciting time when we will be securing our future to ensure that Park Synagogue remains a pillar in our community for many generations to come
