December 2020 Kislev Tevet 5781 parksynagogue org 216 371 2244 facebook com parksyn From the President A MESSAGE FROM SUSAN RATNER D espite the increased stress for all of us amid a pandemic that feels never ending our work for Park is ongoing and our strength as a community continues to shine brightly I have been keeping you all informed of our interactions with Bellefaire and their hopes to build an intentional community on our Cleveland Heights campus for adults on the autism spectrum To both organizations disappointment Bellefaire has decided that current circumstances do not make it possible for them to utilize our property at this time A combination of Covid 19 the renovation cost estimates for the sanctuary and their ongoing investments in other projects has led them with regret to tell us that they do not have the bandwidth for a project of this magnitude While we always knew this was a possibility we had hoped for an outcome that would be beneficial to Bellefaire to Park and to the greater Jewish community Barring a change in circumstances we are doing what we must and exploring all other options including sale of the property We have been immersed in the process of having the property appraised in case sale became the best alternative The appraisal has just been completed and we are forming a committee of the Board headed by Executive Committee member Andy Kline an experienced real estate professional to explore the re use of our land and or sale of some or all of it We have talked both with a council member and the city manager of Cleveland Heights and they are eager to work with us on a solution Stuart Deicher will be taking the Cleveland Heights city manager through the property at her request to help her evaluate whether it is possible for them to keep the property as a park with the possibility of our using the sanctuary We will continue to pursue any feasible opportunity for partnership as we market the property In the spirit of the Jewish tradition we will adjust to the new realities and move forward The financial constraints remain that regardless of what we do it is not financially sustainable to operate two campuses by the next fiscal year Therefore we will do our due diligence and keep you all posted as promised With or without the use of the Cleveland Heights sanctuary the spiritual and emotional core of our synagogue our clergy staff and all of you remain intact I am excited to tell you that we will begin renovation construction this spring or summer we are fully launched into our vision of the future at our new Sydell and Arnold Miller Campus of Park Synagogue As we continue to work with the architects Harley Cohen our owner s rep and the team we are anticipating a year and a half from the start of renovation construction to its completion You saw an overview of ideas in the summer and you know that they are incorporating our feedback We will share their work with you on a regular basis Turn to Page 2
