September 2021 Elul Tishrei 5782 parksynagogue org 216 371 2244 facebook com parksyn Just a Building Hardly A MESSAGE FROM STUART GARSON Past President and Campaign Co Chair W hy is this campaign different from all other campaigns Every generation of Jews is destined to meet its own challenges of Jewish continuity and survival prompted by historical circumstances technology and invention Many of us can trace our ancestry to the Russian Pale which was my grandparents experience They fled pogroms state sponsored terrorism against Jews and immigrated to America via Ellis Island and then to Cleveland With nothing but the clothes on their backs and the few possessions they could carry they crossed a continent and an ocean for the promise of a safe haven Like Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof their most prized possession was their tradition Most of them were not welcomed into the larger American culture and they suffered institutional discrimination They channeled their grievances into educating their children hard work and building their Jewish institutions and oh how they built In 1922 they built the Jewish Center on E 105th Street in Cleveland in the heart of the Russian Jewish community After World War II and the slaughter of European Jewry they built Park Synagogue in the late 40s in Cleveland Heights In the 80s they acquired a synagogue in Pepper Pike to house the Hebrew and Sunday schools for our eastward migrating Jewish community We built again in Pepper Pike in the early 2000s to expand the educational and ritual needs of our synagogue Today we are building again as our congregation has determined that the time has come to recognize our Pepper Pike campus as our main facility to accommodate our Jewish community The challenges our immigrant grandparents faced in their journey to America were so much greater than anything we can imagine It is not hyperbole to suggest that most of us are alive today because of their courage to immigrate And yet the challenges of anti Semitism that brought them to America are still with us as hate crimes against Jews are increasing We are inextricably linked to our ancestors and our antidote and statement against anti Semitism is to build Our synagogues are not just places of worship education and community activities They are the institutions that build Jews and sustain Judaism This is the collective responsibility of every Jewish generation who cares about sustaining the next one This moment is so much bigger than any edifice we can construct We are paying forward a debt to grandparents and parents by honoring their memories and acknowledging that their sacrifice to create a better world for us will never be taken for granted L dor V dor is not a punchline but our connecting tissue to our past present and future Once giants walked amongst us They immigrated to America They fought and defeated the Nazis They educated and provided us opportunities beyond anything they could ever have imagined for themselves They presided over the greatest miracle of our lifetime the establishment of the State of Israel And they built synagogues to nurture Jews and sustain our Jewish communities Honor them with your commitment to sustain our next generation of Jews Let our shofar this year ring out Hineini Here I am Hineini I am ready and available to do my part Hineini because this moment is bigger than Park Synagogue and us Hineini because if not now when And you thought this campaign was just about another building L Shana Tova Stuart Garson

Family Education and Wolf Religious School Rosh HaShanah 5782 September Calendar We could say that Rosh Hashanah comes right on time Sunday Sept 12 Park East Sunday School PreK 7th Grade Madrichim Community Unity begins When we look up at the sky on Monday evening September 6th we will notice a sliver of the moon This signifies not only Rosh Hashanah but also Rosh Chodesh Tishrei The Rabbis have designated Tishrei as the beginning of the religious calendar Many have asked why does Rosh Hashanah come early this year and later in other years It has even been argued that Rosh Hashanah never comes on time it is always too early or too late Sunday Sept 26 Park East Sunday School Harvest Family Field Trip Confirmation Sunday Sept 19 Park East Sunday School Sukkah Food Truck Celebration Confirmation Strange is the bracha on Rosh Hashanah that commands to listen to the sounds of the shofar Why shouldn t the bracha say who is commanded to blow the shofar It seems that one of the central themes of Rosh Hashanah is to focus attention on the importance of listening The earliest recorded secular calendar date for Rosh Hashanah was in 1899 and then again in 2013 when the holiday occurred on September 5th This year in 2021 Rosh Hashanah begins almost as early on September 6th Why does our religious calendar vary from year to year How does one determine when the holidays occur or even when to commemorate a Yahrzeit date Listen Judaism begins with the commandment Hear O Israel But what does it really mean to Hear The person who attends a concert While thinking of other matters Hears but does not really hear The answer can be found in a prayer we recite called Tiku The sound of the shofar at the New Moon The Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar 12 months of 29 or 30 days This causes us to lose eleven days per year when we balance the lunar with our solar based calendar of 365 days For this adjustment we add an entire month seven times in nineteen years We call that additional month Adar ll The Person who listens to the words of a friend Or child And does not catch the tone of urgency Notice me help me care about me Hears but does not really hear This incredible calendar was instituted around the fourth century and explains why some years Rosh Hashanah is early and other years it is later So although we may be celebrating Rosh Hashanah along with Labor Day this year you can expect it to be late in 2022 The person who hears the shofar sound And does not sense its call to change Hears but does not sense its call to change Hears but does not really hear Most importantly though is to always remember that the number of our years may be beyond our control but their quality depends on us Wherever you may be this holiday season know that Jews around the world on Rosh Chodesh Tishrei are dipping apples in honey and being blessed for a sweet new year On behalf of the Hochberg Rube and King family we wish you a year of blessings for a sweet new year of health happiness and cherished experiences As the new year begins O Lord Strengthen our ability to hear May we hear the music of the world And the infant s cry May we hear the call for help of the lonely soul And the sound of the breaking heart May we hear the words of our friends And also their unspoken pleas and dreams May we hear you O God For only if we hear You Do we have the right to hope that You will hear us Hear the prayers we offer to You this day O God And help us to hear them too Shanah Tovah Tikatavu Teri Rube Hochberg Ped D Director of Education The Park Synagogue September March 2018 2021 Page 7 www parksynagogue org
