Paint Color UndertonesAll Paint colors except for the Pure primary ones (Red,Yellow and Blue) are a mix of other colors. The Main coloris the Overtone (or mass tone) and the smaller proportionof another color is the UNDERTONE. All neutral colors, even Whites, aren’t pure color but a mixwith blue, brown, pink, green or other undertones. Thereare hundreds of “Whites” – with the undertones of pink, beige, blue, yellow, purple and green. The undertones make a paint color shade COOL or WARM. A warm paint color has a Pink, Beige, or Yellowundertone.A cool paint color has a Blue , Green or Purple undertoneTo determine the undertone, place several paint chips on apiece of pure white printer paper. You can also look at bothends of a paint color chip strip and the undertone will bemore visible at the darkest color on that strip. J E N N I F E R R O D G E R S | W W W . Paint Quantity Estimation Room Square Footage calculation Length of all the walls x height = SF of thewalls Subtract 20 sf per door and 15 sf peraverage size window (for more precisecalculation). The general rule is to estimate 1 gallon ofpaint to cover 350 square feet of wallsurfaces.. The actual quantity will dependon the condition and the finish of the walls, how many coats are needed and whetheryou’re covering some previous dark colors(such as black, brown or red). Divide the NET SF of the walls by 350 andyou'll get the # of paint gallons you need topurchase! Perform the same calculation forthe ceiling.Perform the same calculation for theceiling. Budget Tips Select only one (maximum 2) paint colors topaint the whole house with. It will cost you lessand will make the house look bigger, as thesame color will flow from room to room. Purchase 5-gallon buckets of paint if you can. Select whatever paint color you wantin a high-end brand (such asBenjamin Moore), but have itreproduced in a cheaper brand (suchas CIL/Dulux/Betonel).If you’re hiring ahandyman/contractor, ask him/herfor their professional discount.Thesavings can be significant! Don’t buy the paint before trying outseveral samples on your walls. Placethem in different areas of the houseand look at them at different times ofthe day. J E N N I F E R R O D G E R S | W W W .
