Impact Fundraising and community activity within BEP continued Stockton Never give up hope because your miracle could be right around the Corner Stay Positive Steve Corner has worked with us for over 10 years a hard working father of 4 grandad of 4 kind considerate and one of those people that you love to catch up with whilst making a brew in the office as they always have a smile on their face However underneath the smile Steve lives with Haemochromatosis and as it was not found until it was more advanced it has resulted in him becoming diabetic suffering from arthritis needing a hip replacement and in the last year being diagnosed with liver cancer The Covid pandemic of the last two years have been hard for everyone but for Steve to receive a cancer diagnosis and end up in hospital from contracting covid on top of all the other issues he has to deal with whilst being isolated and not having the normal support network around him has been especially hard When one of your friends or loved ones is going through a difficult time you want to be there you want to do something to support them and help but due to isolation and treatment there wasn t a lot we could do But we had to do something so over the weekend of the 23rd April 2022 we travelled 85miles 137km to finish at Teesmouth to raise money for Steve and his family Starting at Cross Fell on Saturday morning we pushed our bikes up the hill in 45 55mph head winds and pretty challenging conditions before heading down the other side and along the Pennine Way into Garrigill We then carried on biking through Barnard Castle before spending the night in Middleton One Row Daz did amazingly completing the final part of the bike challenge on his own Sunday morning saw the start of the kayaking heading on to the River Tees at Middleton One Row and paddling for 6 5hrs for 17 5miles to the Tees Barrage We were pretty cold wet and hungry by that point and Rachael picked up the mantle for the girls finishing on the bikes with Daz at South Gare on Sunday evening Steve and his wife Paula met us on Sunday and have been incredibly honoured and humbled by the support and care that has been shown to them through messages and by people donating Steve is staying positive and doing well but with the liver transplant starting to reject two weeks ago they still have a long journey ahead and is a life long condition This is just a message to say a huge THANK YOU to all that have donated the response has been amazing and really shown our Culture of Care Darren Jayne and Alison Your monthly BEP social impact news
