A Message from the President:A Year in ReviewBrendan M. Patterson, MD, FIOTAOTA President3It is clear as I review the many outstanding and impactful accomplishments outlined in this 2022 Annual Report, OTA members have been especially generous in supporting our initiatives in education, research and humanitarianism. A few highlights of the year include the 1st Roy Sanders OTA Traveling Fellowship, the decision to launch an OTA online text-book, and our continued and expanded research and educational oerings. We aspire to provide knowledge globally to low and middle-income countries, at little or no cost to them, and have made strides towards this goal. Our cumulative research funding since inception has reached $13.5M, and our investment in research has leveraged over $77M in additional external funding. I was recently asked how it felt to be President of the OTA, and how does one do all the work. The answer is simply, “many hands.” The work of the OTA rests on the collective leadership model with an engaged board of directors, dozens of commit-tee chairs and members, course faculty with passion for education, video/journal/chapter authors, and the many other dedi-cated members who are engaged in our mission. Much gratitude is owed to our membership whose contributions led to a year of the resounding success outlined in this report. Finally, an acknowledgement, a salute to you, the members of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. OTA members are vital links in a highly fragmented and an all too fragile national health care safety net. The stresses are not small and the system would likely collapse were we absent. You work tirelessly, not infrequently at a lesser wage, to ensure the most vulnerable in our society have access to much needed services at a critical time in their life. Your leadership is grateful for you and your service to others. Many thanks.Sincerely,Brendan M. Patterson, MD, FIOTAOTA President

Through the combined work of Drs. Anna N. Miller, Brendan M. Patterson and Roy Sanders, the OTA formalized plans to institute a traveling fellowship. OTA Traveling Fellowship was created to allow a small group of early-to-mid-career Orthopaedic Trauma surgeons the opportunity to visit multiple trauma centers to promote social connection, mentorship as well as clinical and scientic exchange. The inaugural class of fellows was selected from a collection of competitive applicants at the 2019 Annual Meeting in Denver, but, due to the COVID-19 global pandemic, travel was delayed until the fall of 2022. The tour commenced September 2022 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and from there the fellows visited 14 trauma centers along the Eastern seaboard of the United States and Canada over 4 weeks, concluding in Tampa for the 2022 Annual Meeting of the OTA. The inaugural class of fellows included Dr. Milton Little from Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, California, Dr. Emily Wagstrom from Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Dr. Brandon Yuan from Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. The fellows travelled together for a total of 5 weeks, gave 33 lectures, and had the opportunity to meet and interact with OTA colleagues, department and division chairs, administrators as well as hospital leaders. The host institutions were Dalhousie University, Maine Medical Center, University of Pennsylvania, Boston Medical Center, the Harvard Ortho-paedic Trauma Initiative, the Hospital for Special Surgery, New York University – Langone Orthopaedic Hospital, Inova Fairfax Hospital, University of Maryland- Shock TraumaCenter, University of Virginia, Carolinas Medical Center/Atrium Health, Grady Memorial Hospital – Emory, Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), and the Florida Orthopaedic Institute. The OTA celebrates the creation of the Roy Sanders OTA Traveling Fellowship. Sincere gratitude is extended to Roy Sanders, MD, for his ongoing leadership and generous endowment of a program which will enrich the lives of selected fellows and shape the next generation of OTA leaders. 2022 Roy Sanders OTA Traveling Fellowship Program 17
