Message from the President: A Year in ReviewMichael T. Archdeacon, MDOTA PresidentFrom OTA, to OTA…We Thank You3The last two years have served up a series of unprecedented challenges…to everyone, but not the least to those of us in the medical profession. As I look back at what OTA accomplished in 2021, where we stand now, and where our organization is headed, I am grateful for our incredibly talented and dedicated members. The success of the OTA is owed almost in entirety to the willingness of our members to volunteer tremendous expertise and time. While COVID-19 turned 2020 on its head, and 2021 represented the rst steps toward a new normal, 2022 sees us facing a bold new future.Among the many accomplishments achieved in 2021, two stand out to me personally, which I hope to see car-ried into the coming years. The rst is OTA’s eorts to improve equity, inclusion, and diversity (led by the OTA’s Diversity Task Force). We’ve made progress…never enough, but progress nonetheless…in making OTA a more welcoming environment for all our members. The goal of this process is to transcend gender, racial, ethnic, cultural, and even economic factors to provide a fellowship and educational experience from which we can all benet.The second is an updated focus on mental health and wellness; both that of our patients and ourselves. As trauma surgeons, we often feel like we must handle everything smoothly and with razor sharp focus. This expectation is supported by the fact that many of us achieve exactly that, far more often than not. But we remain human beings. We hope, we fear, we take pride in our successes, and we feel stress and exhaustion just like everyone else. For far too long has the medical profession turned a deaf ear to the human needs of those within it. Many of us have been touched by suicide…that of a colleague, a family member, an old friend from med school. The OTA itself has not gone unaected. And so, OTA leadership has created a task force and hosted symposia to address these needs. We’re just starting out. It’s a long road. But if I can say one thing to my colleagues: if you feel you need help, seek it. It’s okay. We all need that sometimes. It’s possible to be a human and a great surgeon at the same time, but only if you look it in the eye.Taken together, these initiatives are two halves of a coin. We are constantly working to improve the organization in ways that reach out to more people and better serve the needs of its members. To that end, we are reaching out to a more global audience, with tiered costs to address the needs of lower- and middle-income countries. Our Young Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons Committee is focused on building a more welcoming environment for all our members. Projects such as the OTA Podcast touch not only OTA members but cut across specialties to show the world what our members are capable of. And our educational initiatives, arguably the core of what we do, reach out to our own members, our patients, and even non-member medical professionals, to ensure access to what I consider to be the best collection of orthopaedic trauma knowledge on the planet. This Annual Report includes highlights of OTA’s many tremendous achievements in 2021. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to look it over. Again, I would like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank the many members who contributed to the OTA in 2021, whether it was via a leadership position, teaching a course, participatingin video or podcast productions, providing content for OTA Online resources, or any of our many other projects. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to all who donate to OTA. Your contributions are impactful to OTA’s continued ability to fund research and education. If you aren’t currently directly involved but would like to be, I encourage you to look for opportunities to volunteer in 2022. We have many projects in the works—initiatives that will be announced in coming months—and we’ll be happy to direct that enthusiasm into positive results. This is your organization after all, and every step we take is done with the goal of making all of us better.Sincerely,Michael T. Archdeacon, MDPresident, Orthopaedic Trauma Association
