I am honored and excited to have been appointed as Presidentfor 2024, and I look forward to the year with great optimism. The 2024 BoardWe have an outstanding board this year with three new boardmembers who bring fresh perspectives and expertise to ourteam: Tracy Jenkins - Membership Committee, Mike Nicolais -Finance Committee, Ken Badish - Communications Committee. They join Jim Buttimer - Membership Experience Committee,John Blair - Greens Committee, Henning Thorsen and ChrisPortney - Co- Chairs of Golf Committee; and Ron Busch - BoardLiaison PBG & Clubhouse Renovation Committee; and StevePinsker - Board Advisor. A special thanks goes to Past President Russ Werner - Chair ofthe Nomination Committee and for his general advice andfriendship. I would also like to thank Annetta Patrick and RobBrown who leave the board this year having served their term.Their dedication and contributions have been greatlyappreciated.CommitteesThe committee members have been diligently selected, and Iwould like to personally thank each of the volunteers for theircommitment to serving. The work will begin soon, and Ianticipate a busy and fruitful year ahead. We received anoverwhelming response from members interested incontributing, and while we couldn't accommodate everyone, Iwant to express my gratitude to all who offered their time andexpertise. A reinstituted Long Range Planning Committee, led by GregMoss, will focus on shaping the future of the campus, as well asmore immediately establishing a ‘North Star’ for the club, whichwill define a clear and overarching goal, purpose and vision thatguides all decisions, strategies and provides focus. Keep an eyeout for your opportunity to be involved in this. We are also forming a Traditions and Standards Committee.Reporting to the board, the committee will be headed byHenning Thorsen and will include John Blair and Chris Portney. This committee will work alongside the chairs of othercommittees and Adam and his team to uphold and evolve ourclub’s traditions, standards, and etiquette. By maintaining thesevalues, we can continue to provide the best country clubexperience and foster a wonderful social community for allmembers. In addition, we have initiated a Racquets RenovationCommittee, led by Jim Buttimer, ahead of the court projectcommencing this year. This joins the Golf Course RenovationCommittee led by John Blair and the Clubhouse / Patio Bar andGrill Renovation Committee led by Tom Oschner. Approximately 60 members are volunteering among all of thecommittees, representing a diversity of tenure at the club.Thereby ensuring that we have a blend of perspectives that cansignificantly enrich the work and outcome. The Four Projects “Campus Revitalization Plan” January 2024 to April 2026.PBGIt was wonderful to receive the PBG permits over the holidays (alittle earlier than we expected!) and to be able to finalizeagreements and commence work late in January with ascheduled end date in time for the July 4th weekend. It is greatto have Schipper construction on site and commencing demo. THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD
RacquetsThe new Racquets Renovation Committee has hit the groundrunning, holding several meetings and re-scoping this project. There has been overwhelming feedback from the Racquetscommunity that cushioning on the courts is not just nice tohave but a fundamental requirement. Budget constraints makethis an issue of value engineering, which I am confident will beachieved. The permitting process for the Pickle Ball court is alsoproceeding well, and we are continuing to forecast commencingwork later this year.ClubhouseLed by Tom Oschner, the Renovation committees’ work hascontinued without a pause over the holidays, and the forecastof 1 October commencement remains intact. Recently, presentations were given to various County agencies andreview boards for preliminary and conceptual review. Themeetings were a significant milestone and were passed verysuccessfully. Thanks go to SEPPS (Planning and Permittingservice), Anacapa (Architect), CJM (Landscape Architect), PostHazeltine (Historian), and Tynan Group (Project Manager).Golf CourseJohn Blair and the Golf Course renovation committee have beenoverseeing the detailed planning of this project run by ToddEckenrode (Architect) and Wayne Mills, and it is going extremelywell. The project team is now receiving hard bids for theproposed work, providing cost certainty. This work allows us toexercise an option to commence renovation of the Golf Coursein the Spring of 2025 and finish in the Fall of 2025. Instead ofthe original planned schedule, commencing in the spring of2026 and not due to be completed until the summer of 2028. Concurrently a communications program is being finalized tofurther inform and discuss with members. Mike Nicolais,Treasurer, recently wrote a note regarding the member BridgeBond. It is worth reiterating that a successful members vote onthe members’ Bridge Bond will be required to fund the 2025golf course renovation. Should members not support theMembers Bond the golf course renovation will revert to theoriginal schedule of completion in Summer 2028.THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD
I would like to thank Wayne Mills for all that he has done overthe decades. He has overseen the Golf Course, and we are alldelighted that has agreed to help us through the Golf Courserenovation next year. I also wish to pass on the Board'scongratulations to Wayne on receiving the President Awardfrom the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America(GCSAA). In closing, it would be remiss of me not to thank Adam Zubek. He has worked incredibly hard over the six months he has beenwith us. By not only taking on the upgrading of our dailyoperations at the club, and everywhere we see signs of histouch and improvement. As well as successfully getting up tospeed on all four of the projects, all of which have been in theplanning stage for many years.Wayne and Adam are at the GCSAA Conference and Trade Showin Phoenix, AZ. Wayne was presented with the President'sAward for Environmental Stewardship.THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARDl e a r n m o r e
Hello all,This year's Finance Committee comprises returning membersPaul Portney, Sue Wilcox, Jason Spievak, Melissa Gough,Drew Simon, me, and new committee members KevinNewman and Glenn Carter. I'm very thankful to this group foragreeing to serve this year as the next couple of years at theclub will be the most active for this committee in years. Besidesnormal club operations, we have already begun the first of fourmajor projects that will span the next 24+ months: the patio barand grill, the racquet courts, the clubhouse, and the golf courseproject. A lot of information is forthcoming on these projectsthat will be disseminated by the Renovations Committee andthe Golf Committee, including renderings and presentations. Currently the balance sheet of the club looks very strong, withnearly $13 million in cash and no debt. Of course, the cash willbe rapidly depleted as we spend on these projects. I view theFinance Committee's role, among other things, to be awatchdog on the finances related to these projects and to offersuggestions to the Board on financing alternatives such as theBridge Bond proposal, which I wrote about in Adam's lastweekly club update. The budgeting for the club's operations for 2024 was thetrickiest in years, as well debated assumptions about revenueand expenses had to be estimated regarding the closing of thepatio bar and grill for five months and the closing of theclubhouse later this year. The monthly results will need to bescrutinized to make sure that our assumptions are accurate. The number of equity member transfers and other classes ofmemberships will be interesting to monitor as well. Inflationcontinues to be a major concern of mine. THE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARDfrom Mike Nicolaistreasurer’s report
The 2023 audit is underway. We have a new audit firm that hasextensive experience with other country clubs. We hope to beable to learn a few things of value as a result. 2023 ended with asmall surplus from operations and transfer and initiation fees inexcess of our expected budgeted amount. I'm willing to sit down with any member to discuss the club'sfinances. I plan to do a mid-year, in-person update for anyoneinterested in attending to give updates on the projects and cluboperations from a financial perspective. If you have concerns orcriticisms, please come to me directly. I welcome it. Sincerely,Mike NicolaisTHE DIVOT | FROM THE BOARD(continued)treasurer’s report
Most of you are aware that our award-winning Superintendent,Wayne Mills, announced his retirement a few weeks ago. Wayne hasgraciously agreed to remain on board as a consultant for our courserenovation through 2025 after he retires from full-time duty on May 1.Wayne has transformed our golf course over the past 20-plus yearsinto a beautifully sustainable reflection of our local environment. Hehas maintained top-level playing conditions despite having an aginginfrastructure and has done it all with a smile and commitment toexcellence for our membership. I think I can safely say that for pastGreen Committee Chairs and Members, working with Wayne Mills hasbeen a highlight of our membership experience. Personally, I will missmy favorite text after every Board Meeting from Wayne: “Do we stillhave jobs?”. I laugh every time! We are well into the process of searching for Wayne’s successor andhave a series of interviews coming up in February. The response hasbeen quite robust, and we are confident we will find a candidate tosteward La Cumbre in the years ahead. As Wayne explained histhinking for the timing of his retirement, “It makes sense to let thenew Superintendent take control once the course reopens, and I canbe here during the renovation to relay the nuances of La Cumbre.” The bidding process for the course renovation work has beencompleted, and our team, led by Wayne, is reviewing all of the bidsand narrowing down the contractors to select winners. This processshould be completed by the end of February. Moving the renovationwork forward to the spring of 2025 will require we pass the “BridgeBond” measure you have heard about in recent communications. As areminder, the Bridge Bond does not require any additionalassessments to members; it is simply a financing mechanism to pullthe golf course work forward so we can complete the entire series ofconstruction projects on campus in a tighter timeframe and not haveyears of disruption. Greens work during 2024 mainly consists of landscaping activities andsome tee leveling. Lastly, I am happy to report that we have a full lake.Enjoy a fun year of golf! If you have been following along with my articles over the months, you know I love to keep it real with you all and drop some truthbombs along the way. I have recently been experiencing somedecision fatigue, and I figured we could talk about it for our articlethis month because I know I am not the only one who goesthrough it.Decision fatigue occurs when the quality of your decisionsdeteriorates after making many choices, leading to mentalexhaustion and difficulty taking action. I personally relate to thelatter and feel that once too many things build up, it becomesdifficult to do what needs to be done, no matter how small. We areall human and will struggle with this throughout our lives, but Iwant to highlight a few strategies that I use that helptremendously.Prioritize and Plan: Start by identifying your most important tasksor decisions for the day. Prioritize them based on their urgencyand importance. Breaking down your goals into smaller, manageable tasks can make them seem less overwhelming.Limit Choices: Reduce the number of decisions you need to makeby establishing routines or pre-planning certain aspects of yourday. For example, you can plan your meals for the week, establisha daily schedule, or choose your outfit the night before. Delegate Responsibilities: Delegate tasks whenever possible, especially those that don't require your direct involvement.Delegating frees up mental energy for more critical decisions andactions.
