Charity No:298235 ORDER OF SERVICE Entrance of the Official Party (and standards) THE WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONS Bishop: Welcomes those gathered and explains the memorials. We have gathered around these memorials today to remember all those who have been lost in the skies above the Parish of Thorney and above us here at Knarr Fen during the 20th century. We welcome national and international representatives of the armed services and guests together with local people whose lives have been touched by events in the skies over this Parish. THE ACT OF REMEMBRANCE/THE DEDICATION AND RE-DEDICATION Bishop: O God of truth and justice, we hold before you those whose memory we cherish, and those whose names we will never know. Help us to lift our eyes above the torment of this broken world and grant us the grace to pray for those who wish us harm. As we honour the past, may we put our faith in your future; for you are the source of life and hope, now and for ever. All: Amen

This is the word of the Lord ALL: Thanks be to God POEM: High Flight - By John Gillespie Magee Jr. RCAF. Read by Chair of the Thorney Society Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings; Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth of sun-split clouds,—and done a hundred things. You have not dreamed of—wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there, I've chased the shouting wind along, and ung My eager craft through footless halls of air .... Up, up the long, delirious, burning blue I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace Where never lark, or even eagle ew— And, while with silent lifting mind I've trod The high un-trespassed sanctity of space, Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

Charity No:298235 All: Lord God, Father of all, we pledge ourselves to serve you and this neighbourhood, to bring relief to all who are in need, and comfort to the sad, lonely, and distressed; Keep us ever mindful of the struggles and achievements of former generations, and of this place where we make our home, now, and in the days to come. Amen. Strengthen our hearts, and hands, and minds, O Lord, to work together for peace; to see you in one another; and to seek your kingdom above all things; that your will may be seen to be done and your kingdom come, through Jesus Christ, the Lord of lords and King of kings. Amen. Bishop: As we ask that God’s will may be done in this and every place, so we pray together as Jesus Christ has taught us: All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Charity No:298235 Hymn: Praise, my soul, the King of heaven, To his feet thy tribute bring; Ransomed, healed, restored, forgiven, Who like me his praise should sing? Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise the everlasting King! Praise him for his grace and favour To our fathers in distress; Praise him still the same for ever, Slow to chide, and swift to bless. Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Glorious in his faithfulness. Father-like he tends and spares us; Well our feeble frame he knows; In his hands he gently bears us, Rescues us from all our foes. Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Widely as his mercy flows. Angels, help us to adore him; Ye behold him face to face; Sun and moon, bow down before him, Dwellers all in time and space: Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise him! Praise with us the God of grace.
