absolute love, loyalty and devotion for family and friendsbe kind and help where you canfind your passion and go hard or go homeWelcomeToday, we gather here to honour the memory of our beloved Richard, whotragically lost his life while pursuing his greatest passion. His untimely passinghas left us with heavy hearts and a profound sense of loss. As we remember Richard today, let’s cherish the memories we shared with him- the moments filled with laughter, his great sense of fun and mischief. Helived lightly on the world and was always ready to share a joke (or make a badDad one). We loved to hear his stories over and over again, almost as much ashe enjoyed telling them He approached challenges with a calm “can do” attitude. His keen mind andproblem solving skills meant he could fix just about anything. Whether it wasin his personal or professional life, he never settled for second best. Hisdedication and drive were evident in every everything he did. Richard was a kind and loving man full of compassion. He was always therewith a helping hand or a sympathetic ear. His courage and flagrant disregardfor the impossible inspired us all to want to be, and do more.A devoted husband and father, he brought a sense of strength and security toour lives. He taught us that we could achieve anything with confidence andhard work (or as we say with grit and grind). He chose a fair and forgiving lens in his life – always quick to offer the benefitof the doubt and slow to judge or condemn. He lived his life by the simple butimportant philosophy of:-Richard was a remarkable, determined and disciplined athlete. His passion forriding brought him great joy. In this and everything he undertook; hedemonstrated absolute conviction and a commitment to excellence that wasunmatched. As we reflect on Richard's life today, let’s remember him for the remarkableperson he was - someone who lived each day to the fullest. Though we mournhis loss, let’s also celebrate the legacy he leaves behind. His memory willcontinue to inspire us all to approach life with the same passion andunwavering commitment that defined his character. DesiderataGo placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember whatpeace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender,be on good terms with all persons.Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even tothe dull and the ignorant; they too have their story.Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested inyour own career, however humble; it is a real possession in thechanging fortunes of time.Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full oftrickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; manypersons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynicalabout love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass.Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth.Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars;you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe isunfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whateveryou conceive Him to be. And whatever your labours and aspirations,in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all itssham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Becheerful. Strive to be happy.Written by Max Ehrmann 1927This was a reading that we had at our Wedding Ceremony DesiderataGo placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember whatpeace there may be in silence. Space Oddity Ground control to Major Tom Ground control to Major Tom Lock your Soyuz hatch and put your helmet on. Ground control to Major Tom Commencing countdown engines on Detach from station and may God's love be with you This is ground control to Major Tom You've really made the grade And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear But it's time to guide the capsule if you dare This is Major Tom to ground control I've left forevermore And I'm floating in most peculiar way And the stars look very different today For here am I sitting in a tin can Far above the world The planet Earth is blue and there's nothing left to do Though I've flown one hundred thousand miles I'm feeling very still And before too long I know it's time to go Our commander comes down back to earth, and knows Ground control to Major Tom The time is near, there's not too long Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you Here am I floating in my tin can A last glimpse of the world The planet Earth is blue and there's nothing left to doWritten and Performed by David Bowie This plays in the background of the slide show - it was a favourite for Rich &Flic. Homeward BoundIn the quiet misty morningWhen the moon has gone to bedWhen the sparrows stop their singingAnd the sky is clear and redWhen the summer’s ceased its gleamingWhen the corn is past its primeWhen adventure’s lost its meaningI’ll be homeward bound in timeBind me not to the pasture;Chain me not to the ploughSet me free to find my callingAnd I’ll return to you somehowIf you find it’s me you’re missingIf you’re hoping I’ll returnTo your thoughts I’ll soon be listeningIn the road I’ll stop and turnThen the wind will set me racingAs my journey nears its endAnd the path I’ll be retracingWhen I’m homeward bound againBind me not to the pasture;Chain me not to the ploughSet me free to find my callingAnd I’ll return to you somehowWritten By Allyse Smith performed by Angelica Cantati Youth ChoirsThis is a favourite of mine, I like the idea of a life of adventure, well lived, ending with a gently homecoming Homeward BoundIn the quiet misty morningWhen the moon has gone to bedWhen the sparrows stop their singingAnd the sky is clear and redWhen the summer’s ceased its gleamingWhen the corn is past its primeWhen adventure’s lost its meaningI’ll be homeward bound in timeBind me not to the pasture;Chain me not to the ploughSet me free to find my callingAnd I’ll return to you somehowIf you find it’s me you’re missingIf you’re hoping I’ll returnTo your thoughts I’ll soon be listeningIn the road I’ll stop and turnThen the wind will set me racingAs my journey nears its endAnd the path I’ll be retracingWhen I’m homeward bound againBind me not to the pasture;Chain me not to the ploughSet me free to find my callingAnd I’ll return to you somehowWritten By Allyse Smith performed by Angelica Cantati Youth ChoirsThis is a favourite of mine, I like the idea of a life of adventure, well lived, ending with a gently homecoming
Do not Stand at My GraveDo not stand at my grave and weepI am not there. I do not sleep.I am a thousand winds that blow.I am the diamond glints on snow.I am the sunlight on ripened grain.I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hushI am the swift uplifting rushOf quiet birds in circled flight.I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry;I am not there. I did not die.Do not stand at my grave and weepI am not there. ClosingWe can’t tell you how much it means to us that you are here. We knowhow much Rich loved all of you. We so appreciate all the love andsupport that you have shown our family during this terrible time.Days like these are hard and beautiful at the same time. They remind uswhat life is for and that its short and sometimes very unfair. Simultaneously heart breaking and heart warming, they bring us togetherto mourn and be sad for our loss and to feel the warmth, care andkindness of our friends and family. They teach us not to take each other for granted and to leave nothingunsaid. We realise that we are surrounded by a love that gives us safehaven to reflect on our wins and losses, to remember what was beautifuland lasting, and that its ok to be vulnerable.I believe that we all come from love and to love we return …. and all Ihave to do is to look around this room to see that love, and I am trulyhumbled, honoured and grateful. I think that in the busyness of ourmodern lives its easy to get caught up in the small stuff and to forgetwhat’s really important – to hold your loved ones close and to say “I loveyou” as often as you can.So I wanted to leave you with The Opening Dialogue from the film LoveActually… (a film that we watch every year when we decorate theChristmas Tree) “Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about thearrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. Into My ArmsI don't believe in an interventionist GodBut I know, darling, that you doBut if I did I would kneel down and ask HimNot to intervene when it came to youNot to touch a hair on your headTo leave you as you areAnd if He felt He had to direct youThen direct you into my armsInto my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord…….Into my armsAnd I don't believe in the existence of angelsBut looking at you I wonder if that's trueBut if I did I would summon them togetherAnd ask them to watch over youTo each burn a candle for youTo make bright and clear your pathAnd to walk, like Christ, in grace and loveAnd guide you into my armsInto my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord…….Into my armsAnd I believe in LoveAnd I know that you do tooAnd I believe in some kind of pathThat we can walk down, me and youSo keep your candle burningAnd make a journey bright and pureThat will keep returningAlways and evermoreInto my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord, Into my arms, O Lord…….Into my armsWritten by Nicholas Caveperformed by Eliza RickmanRichard didn’t really believe in God or religion, but he did have a deep respect for faithand what it could do.
