your expenses and divide those items up into two categories: needs and wants. Needs are the bills that must be paid first:rent, mortgage, car payment, insurance, gas to get to work, food etc. Wants are the items that you like to do such as going out, your morning coee purchase, extra items in the grocery cart, online purchases, trips, etc.50/30/20 RuleWhen you are spending your salary, 50% should go to your needs, 30% should to your wants and 20% should go to yourfinancial goals. Once you have tracked your expenses for the month, see how they compare based on this rule. Adjust your wants as needed and make the choices that matter most to you.For instance, while the price for groceries is high, take a look at your grocery list. Are there items that you don’t really need? Can you make one meal that will last for two? What can you make at home rather than going out? Get creative while saving. Plan your meals ahead of time and make fewer trips to the store. Once your expenses are aligned, consider setting up an automatic transfer for the 20% allocated to your goals. Transfer itright out of your paycheck into a savings account, goal saver account, Christmas club, or money market to start earninginterest. Pay yourself first and watch your money grow. Having trouble getting your budget to line up? Stop in and see us. We can help you get it sorted out. Use TechnologyOnce you have your spending plan, buy those pre-determined wants. Stick to the plan. Use technology to keep an eye onyour accounts and track expenses. Set up text/email alerts to keep track of withdrawals, balances, etc. Use the MoneyManagement Tool on NuMark’s app or at numarkcu.org to see a picture of where you spend your money. Want to pay oa credit card in six months? The Money Management Tool can help you determine the right monthly payment.Ready to make your money work harder for you? Give us a call at 815-729-3211. We will be happy to talk about yourfinancial goals.GETTING OUT OF THE OVERSPENDING TRAPDid you know that 7 out of 10 people overspend during the holidays? It is easy to fall into this trap any time of year. There is a “not-so-secret” weapon that you can use to avoid the overspending trap. We’re talking about a Budget. We know just mentioning the word makes everyone cringe; but do this, take a moment to think of a budget as yourpermission to spend. That’s right, your budget is actually your spending plan. It is a way of saying “yes” to the things that matter most to you. Your budget is a ticket to financial freedom rather than the thing that limits your life.Needs vs WantsKeep track of all your income and expenses for a month. Then, list all of
