WHERE YOU ARE FAMILYGIVING BACK: HONOR FLIGHT CHICAGO & FLAGS IN DAYFrom April 5th to May 31st, NuMark Credit Union collected donations for Honor Flight Chicago, where we would match the first $1,500 in person donations made in our lobbies. Honor Flight Chicago is a non-profit organization dedicated to honoring veterans and providing memorable trips to Washington, D.C. Through the help of our members and sta, we were able to make a $2,575 donation!NuMark Credit Union sta and board members were also present at this year’s first Honor Flight Homecoming of the seasonat Midway Airport on May 10th. This flight was a special one because it celebrated the flight of their 10,000th veteran flown!Wally Chlipala, NuMark volunteer board member and veteran was one of those who was there. “I have attended aHonor Flight return flight to Midway and it is a remarkable reception for the returning veterans. A long day but I knowrewarding. I had an opportunity to speak to a few veterans that returned and their statements about the day are nothing but praise for those who were involved in the program. Many veteran comments were similar. They never thought they would be part of such a wholehearted patriotic experience.”Ray Eich, also a NuMark volunteer board member and veteran, has been a part of the experience and he says, “this is just another example how NuMark Credit Union cares about our veterans and their opportunity to receive the honor they deserve for the sacrifices they went through serving our Country. The money collected at our branches, and NuMark matching up to $1,500.00 makes it possible for Honor Flight Chicago to keep honoring those who served.”On May 26th, at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, NuMark Credit Union sta and board members together with other volunteers helped place 70,000 American flags in front of every grave site and Columbarium wall within the grounds tocelebrate veterans for the Memorial Day holiday.Flags In Day, is an annual event that aims to honor our heroes by placing American flags on the grave sites of veterans inNational cemeteries across the country. This tradition goes back to 1948 when the soldiers assigned to the 3rd InfantryDivision at Arlington National Cemetery began the practice to honor soldiers in preparation for Memorial Day. The event is referred to as “Flags In” because it is when the flags are placed in the ground in front of every grave site and Columbariumwall within the grounds.“Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery is a remarkable local treasure. The Memorial Day tradition was originally known as Decoration Day to honor those who gave all. We must never forget honoring the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Military. Joliet’s new submarine monument is at the Veterans Memorial, on the south side of Bicentennial Park.
