With winter not far away, there’s more than just the holidays to be worriedabout. While the season can be beautiful, the weather can wreak havoc onyour car and rack up a huge bill to fix the damage. To save yourself a headache(and money), there’s a few things you can do ahead of time to prepare yourcar for winter.Protect Your TiresThe first thing to do is check your tire quality and air pressure. It’s importantto ensure you have at least 4/32-inch tread depth for colder weather. Checkyour tire pressure as well, as weather changes can cause it to drop, wearingyour tires down quicker and putting you at a higher risk of a blowout. It’s also worth getting yourself a set of winter tires. Even if you have AWD tires, in the winter the tread can become hard as a rock, which doesn’t help you avoid sliding. Winter tires are built specifically to provide better grip on the road.Check Your FluidsWith winter comes freezing temperatures, which can mean that the fluid levels in your car could be at risk, and therefore the health of your vehicle. It’s a good idea that before the temperatures get to their freezing points, you check the coolant, brake, power steering, and windshield wiper fluids. It’s especially important with your coolant, as it controls the heat in your car, which you’ll need to defrost your windshield for visibility.Expect the UnexpectedEven if you’ve checked all your fluids, checked your tires and the air pressure, anything can happen. That’s why it’s a great idea to put together a “Winter Emergency Kit,” to keep in your car that contains the following: basic first-aid kit, jumper cables, flashlight, brush and scraper, blanket, extra gloves and hat, and small shovel. These will come in handy if you find yourself in a roadside emergency in the winter.Winter has a lot of things to look forward to – hot apple cider, holidays spent with the family, and fun parties to end the year with a bang. However, the weather can cause a lot of damage to your car if you aren’t properly prepared. Save yourself the hassle and make sure that your car is ready for winter before those freezing temperatures really hit.If you’re still on the hunt for a new vehicle to last you through the winter, or you know that this might be your car’s lastwinter with you, rest assured that there are a variety of loan options at NuMark for you to get the car you want at a pricethat your budget can manage. When he became CEO of NorthStar in 1991 — then called NaperTech FCU – the credit union was operating out of a single-leased office space and only had $16M in assets. By the time of the merger with NuMark and NorthStar, NorthStar had grown to four branch locations and over $200M in assets under Fredendall’s leadership.NuMark is now proud to have 13 locations throughout the South suburbs of Chicago and has over $824M in assets. Thecredit union offers a full menu of services and products and serves over 60,000 members throughout the Southwest Chicago and Northwest Indiana area.“I will of course miss the many Board members, Team members, and Credit Union members alike that I have befriended over the years,” added Fredendall. “However, I take great solace in knowing that our staff and members will be in the very capable hands of Michelle Balog who will soon be taking over the reins. On top of that, in my opinion Michelle is supported by one of, if not the best teams in the credit union industry.”NuMark is incredibly grateful for the incredible leadership during Fredendall’s tenure with the organization. The credit union is determined to continue exemplifying Fredendall’s passion for the credit union movement and supporting the surrounding communities through financial assistance and community outreach.PROTECT YOUR CAR, PROTECT YOUR FINANCES- Cover Article (Continued)

Fall is officially here, which means that the holiday seasonis right around the corner. While the holidays are a greattime of the year to spend amongst family and friends, itcan also be stressful financially when you’re wanting tobuy presents for your loved ones but are on a tighter budget. It doesn’t have to be stressful, though! There are plenty ofways for you to get your holiday shopping done withoutworrying that you’re going to blow your budget. Plan Ahead and BudgetIt can be stressful, but there’s never a bad time to startplanning for your holiday expenses. If you already have a list of items you want to buy for friends and family, start looking at prices now so you can get an idea of how much you’ll be spending. Some other expenses you might want to plan for are potential travel, the cost of sending out holiday cards, and anydonations you might want to make during this Season of Giving. If you’re able to look back on bills from previous yearsaround the holidays, that can be a huge help with figuring out an estimate. Once you have a general estimate of how much you’ll potentially be spending, you can start really planning for the holidays and adjusting your budget to account for theadditional expenses.Make Your Two ListsIt’s understandable that around this time, you want to be able to give gifts to everyone in your life – but that’s unfortunately not realistic. It’s a good rule of thumb that if you find yourself wanting to buy gifts for more than five people outside of your immediate family, you should probably start cutting it down.Picking 3-5 friends outside your immediate family to purchase for is a helpful tactic for keeping down your gift bill. It doesn’t mean that you can’t give to other friends and people in your life, either! For those that you decide not to buy for, you can still spread some holiday season joy with some homemade gifts like holiday cookies or sending them a holiday card! It’s Okay to Say NoWith the excitement of holidays comes the expectations of donations and invites to celebrations. Keep in mind that it’s okayto say no every now and then. You can’t donate to every charity and cause that’s asking for help during the holidays. Keep in mind that you’re not the only one being asked to help. It’s better to pick out a few organizations that mean a lot to you to send a donation to during theholidays. Your support also doesn’t have to be monetary, either! Plenty of food banks, soup kitchens, and other kinds ofcharities need additional help during the holiday season to assist in organizing donations. Look into potential volunteeropportunities instead to donate your time – that way you’re still helping out without affecting your budget. The same goes for parties. While it’s easy to feel the pressure to say yes to every single invitation, you really don’t have to. Parties can be costly, especially if you bring a gift for each host and are potentially buying new clothes as well. Similar todonating, pick out a few parties to actually attend throughout the season. For the ones you say no to, you can always send them a holiday card to show them you appreciated the thought. As much fun as the holidays are meant to be, the financial strain can get in the way of that joy for a lot of people. There are a lot of different ways to prepare for the additional expenses, including making homemade gifts, volunteering your time at local charities, and having an account used strictly for holiday expenses, like NuMark’s Christmas Club account. Remember that this season is for spending time with those who mean the most to you, and that gifts and material things come second. If you do need help with your holiday finances, remember to use NuMark as a resource! Visit us at numarkcu.org or give us a call at 815-729-3211.EASING THE STRESS OF HOLIDAY SPENDING
