pg. 4A Message from OMIA ChairKevin Inglis, Howick MutualAfter a long and snowy winter, the Spring of 2025 is nally here! For my rst report for the OM News, I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Marg Torrance on hosting a very successful OMIA Convention this past March. I would also like to give a special acknowledgment to her recent, well-deserved retirement! My theme for the upcoming year is “A Strong Legacy & Secure Future” and I would like to comment briey on this.In my remarks in Toronto, and in the spirit of our “Strong Legacy”, I asked that you take some time in the upcoming year to research some history on your mutual. I predicted that there would be some interesting details that you may not have been aware of. It’s been my experience that, when sourcing this information, each mutual will probably have one or two history buffs who are more than willing to share some stories from the past. With this theme in mind, I’ve decided to provide a few snippets of OMIA history. • Prior to becoming OMIA as we know it today, our Association was referred to as The Purely Mutual Underwriter’s Association of Ontario (founded in 1882). This was changed ve years later to the Mutual Fire Underwriters Association and remained this way until 1974 when it was changed to the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association. • Over the 143-year history of the Association, there have only been ten different Secretary/Presidents. • At the end of 1882, the number of Mutual companies totalled 52 (there were 74 Mutual companies in the province and members of the Association, but only 52 were considered ‘pure’ mutuals). The total premiums earned was $43,627 and the combined prot for the year for all companies was $1,845. Shockingly, there was no mention of what accounting standard was used to calculate the year-end number. (IFRS 1?) With regards to a Secure Future, you will see that the OM News is consistently lled with announcements of new staff and directors to our mutuals and related partners. This leads me to yet another request. I ask that you take the time in the upcoming year to reach out to one or two of these individuals and give them your own personal welcome to the Mutual Family. I’m a big believer in small gestures having signicant impact and, who knows? You may be greeting a future leader in our industry. In closing, I would like to express my gratitude for this amazing opportunity to serve as your OMIA Board Chair for the upcoming year. I’m looking forward to meeting and speaking with you at the many OMIA events we have planned for the year ahead! Respectfully,Kevin Inglis

pg. 5At OMIA we value our many relationships throughout the industry, and for many years, we have had a productive working relationship with the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Although not full members, we are active participants in IBC’s Ontario Strategic Issues group. This alliance allows for two-way communication. We share the mutual perspective on public policy issues that affect insurance and, just as importantly, we have access to IBC’s research and thinking on emerging topics. This March, IBC launched a multi-media campaign, “Protecting Your Tomorrows” focused on how insurers work to protect individuals and communities, both before and after severe weather events. Our mutual insurance companies have all experienced the stress of responding to a catastrophe, and we empathize with the need to create good will and good faith with policyholders facing challenging times. You may have seen or heard this campaign on radio, TV, or social media. We’re pleased to support this campaign and our mutual philosophy of neighbour helping neighbour.Typically, March marks our annual visit to Toronto for our Legislative Affairs Queen’s Park Day, an opportunity to meet with MPPs and staff for informal discussions on our role as mutual insurers. While this is an important chance to talk with MPPs on how mutual insurers benet their communities, it is also a chance to hear from MPPs and staff about issues they’re working on and that they’re hearing about in their constituencies. Unfortunately, the proroguing of the government, and the subsequent election, had us postpone our visit. Thank you to our mutual members who connected with MPPs and candidates during the short election campaign to keep open our lines of communication on important mutual issues. We look forward to our next Legislative Affairs Roundtable during this interesting political environment. pg. 6A Message from OMIA Past Chair, Marg TorranceAs I write my last message in OM News, I’m lled with gratitude for the incredible opportunity to have served as Chair of this great organization. It has been an absolute delight to serve in this role and be able to meet with and interact with so many of you over the past year. It was truly one of the highlights of my (long!) career in this industry.I’ve learned a lot, particularly about the diversity and strength of the mutual members that make up our system. Our resilience and our collaboration have allowed us to face numerous challenges together. This unique ability to work together separates from the rest of the insurance industry and sets us up well for future success. As I mentioned at OMIA’s Annual Convention in March, an old African saying called “Ubuntu” seems to be demonstrated throughout our community. To be able to see ourselves in others, and instead of competing, work in a “symbiotic cooperative” relationship with one another. Ubuntu tells us that we are ONLY who we are thanks to other people around us. I can honestly say that I am a better person for being surrounded by the wonderful people in this community. There will be many challenges and lots of uncertainty ahead. Now, more than ever, we need to “lean in” with courage, curiosity, and conviction. I want to express my gratitude to John Taylor and the OMIA team for their amazing support over the past year and during my entire term on the Board. It has been such a privilege to work with this incredible group of people. And to my fellow Board members, past and present, a big thank you for your encouragement, support, and friendship.Lastly, a big thank you to the members of our mutual community and to our policyholders that we serve so well.Let’s continue to honour our “Strong Legacy” and “Secure Future” as we move forward together!Mutually yours, Marg

pg. 7Get to Know More About Marg TorranceMany in our mutual community may have missed the opportunity to get to know Marg Torrance during her year as Chair. Marg had a busy year of attending mutual conferences, conventions, events, and meetings, but in case you missed her, here are some questions we asked Marg to give you a bit more insight into who she is. Which living person do you most admire? My very good friend, who, despite severe hardships and tragedy, is grounded in faith, hope and love for others. She has maintained her sense of humour and makes me laugh too! What is your greatest extravagance?Going out for a beautiful meal that includes great wine! What is your current state of mind? Content! What quality do you most like in a person?Compassion and grace. (Sorry, that’s two, but they go together!)My family would tell you I am:DedicatedWhich talent would you most like to have? It’s a toss up between playing the piano and writing songs! What is your favourite pastime or hobby?I can’t narrow that down to one! - Singing, dancing, walking in the sunshine, gardening, looking after my granddaughters, volunteering ..the list goes on!What do you consider to be your greatest achievement?Raising two incredible, beautiful human beings. What is the most interesting place you have ever visited?Osaka, Japan. Living there as a “local” for 5 weeks was fascinating!Where in the world would you most like to live?Somewhere on the water, surrounded by trees and mountains (would settle for rolling hills), in a peaceful country. Sounds like Canada! What is your most treasured possession? My grandmother’s (who I never met) gold cameo pendant. What genre do you most like to read?Historical FictionWho is your hero of ction?Isabelle RossignolIf you could visit and explore any time in history, which time would you choose?Tough one! I’m curious about much of the past, but I’d probably want to spend (a bit!) of time in early AD 27-30, just to see and hear what was being discussed and debated in the Middle East region. What do you think is the greatest opportunity for the mutuals? To work together as a community to “live out” our mutual values, be known and recognized for being true “grassroots” Canadian companies that care about their communities. What do you think is the greatest challenge for the mutuals? To work together as a community to “live out” our mutual values and maintain our grassroots identity. What is your personal motto?Be kind always and don’t judge others. You don’t know their story.

Held annually in Lindsay, the show prides itself on grassroots foundation built on strong community ties. Proceeds from the show help support community events and scholarships. One project Axiom is so proud of is the successful expansion of our Director’s Cut – Fields to Foodbanks initiative. In 2024, our Directors generously donated tractor hours and agricultural expertise to harvest the 40 acre eld surrounding our Zurich ofce location. Our Staff and advisors further contributed their personal donations and all-star stone picking techniques towards the project! In the fall, we were fortunate to have Scott Miller from CTV join us to make the donations to our three area food banks: Ailsa Craig & Area Foodbank, Huron County Food Distribution Centre and the Strathroy Salvation Army. We are proud to report that the Director’s Cut initiative has raised over $78,000 since it’s inaugural year in 2021. pg. 21The CommonwellWe’re dedicated to supporting and strengthening the communities in which we operate. Our commitment to giving back is not just about nancial contributions, but about creating lasting, positive change through community-focused initiatives and programs. In our 2024 Impact Report, we showcased the broad range of programs we’ve implemented to help foster resilience, food security, access to learning, and overall well-being within our communities. The SEEDit program aims to increase food security by empowering individuals to grow their own food by providing participants with the materials and guidance to start their own vegetable gardens and share the harvest, encouraging self-sufciency and reducing food insecurity. This program has returned for 2025 with an estimated 6,000 registrants. A virtual community of gardeners on Facebook allows participants to collaborate and feel the impact of the program beyond their own participation. You can visit the SEEDit Community on Facebook to learn more. The L.E.A.F. program (Learning and Engagement Accelerator Fund) is another cornerstone of The Commonwell’s community impact strategy. L.E.A.F. was created to support grassroots initiatives that enhance local learning environments and community spaces. It provides funding to help local organizations, schools, and community groups establish or upgrade educational and recreational facilities. This funding helps ensure that communities have the infrastructure necessary to deliver programs and services that contribute to the well-being of their members. Ontario communities are facing unprecedented demands for this type of funding, with rural communities often left behind. In 2024, L.E.A.F. received $3.7M in funding requests and provided $400,000 in grants to 11 projects. L.E.A.F will return in September 2025. Visit thecommonwell.ca/leaf for more information and to nd information about how organizations can apply. Our 2024 Impact Report also highlights the direct impact The Commonwell has on policyholders through claims, and employees through opportunities for paid volunteer time and charity donations. This will continue to evolve, encompassing the work we’re doing to emphasize sustainability in business practices. As a mutual insurance company, our responsibility is to ensuring we can be a sustainable community partner for generations to come. pg. 22Edge MutualWe’re pleased to share that we partnered again with the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington’s Christmas Adopt-a-Family Program and sponsored ve families this past Christmas. We also kept the holiday spirit of giving strong through donations to three local schools and their snack program, as well as various food bank donations. Our Edge Mutual team members are pictured below, sharing the contributions.

pg. 23Our Social Committee is very active during the holiday season. All year long the team members of U&H contribute to a “Friday Jean Fund” that we then use to spread Christmas cheer to others. This year we provided gifts for three families from Bluewater Coast Elementary School (six students as well as something for the parents). We also provided gifts for some seniors at Bluewater Rest Home in Zurich. In another special opportunity, we were able to give a $500 gift card to a Syrian refugee family in Stratford to help with food and clothing needs – although they don’t celebrate Christmas, the gift was greatly appreciated (their thank-you card is pictured left). We donated our remaining funds, $275, to the Exeter Food Bank. We take ‘the season of giving’ very seriously around here.Usborne & Hibbert MutualIn memory of a beloved young man, Carter Schoonderwoerd, who passed away tragically in 2021, U&H along with one of our brokers, JP Uniac Insurance, each provided $5,000 as a contribution towards building the CS8 outdoor rink in Mitchell. This is a personal point of passion for both Jason Uniac (Owner/President, JP Uniac) and U&H Agent, Julia Simpson who both know and insure many family members. The 8 in CS8 is for Carter’s hockey number – Carter was an avid hockey player. Carter’s parents, Joe and Heather (4th and 5th from the left in the picture) have been so overjoyed with the tremendous giving support of the community, and they hope to have the rink built this year – what an accomplishment! We believe that no one should go without the essentials and we’re proud to support this incredible initiative, helping local individuals and families in need. Not forgetting our furry friends, our staff lent a helping paw by collecting and donating much-needed pet supplies to Pet & Wildlife Rescue of Chatham-Kent because every fur baby deserves a little extra ruff and uff in their life! We hope our donation helps make tails wag and whiskers twitch with joy.Kent & Essex, along with our broker partner, Brokerlink, were thrilled to be major sponsors for the recent Music For The Mind concert in February. The concert was a huge success, raising close to $20,000 to support mental health services and resources in our community. The funds will go to Family Service Kent to provide minimal fee, or free, counselling for children and adults, the KIDS Team Program to cover the cost of psychological assessments for children, and to Chatham-Kent’s Children’s Treatment Centre for initial FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) assessments. Together, we are committed to promoting mental wellness and joining in the ght against mental health issues in Chatham-Kent.Project Poinsettia is an annual heartwarming initiative by Kent & Essex Mutual and local radio station 99.1 CKXS to bring joy and holiday cheer to seniors and those in care. During the holidays, hundreds of potted poinsettias were delivered by hand to senior homes, hospitals, and care facilities across Chatham-Kent to remind those who might have felt lonely during the holiday season that they were cherished and remembered. Through the bright red and yellow blooms, warm conversations were shared along the way, lifting spirits and creating joyful moments for seniors, patients and also healthcare staff alike. We were also beyond thrilled to match our broker partner, HUB Southwestern Ontario’s, incredible holiday fundraising of over $6,000, bringing the total to over $12,000 to support ten amazing organizations: Essex Food Bank, Hiatus House, Kingsville Food Bank, Leamington Centre of Hope, Leamington Mersea Goodfellow Club, Neighbourhood Charitable Alliance, Noah’s House, Ronald McDonald House of Windsor, The Hospice of Windsor and Essex County and Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation. Every end of year, both Kent & Essex and HUB join forces to give back to the community and support organizations that make meaningful impact in people’s lives. Funds raised will help organizations continue their vital work, offering food, shelter, mental health support and essential care and other services to those who are in need. Through this annual initiative, we remain committed to supporting local charities, strengthening our communities and making a positive difference.Kent & Essex Mutual

pg. 25At the Chatham Armoury Christmas Market in November 2024, Kent & Essex, along with our esteemed broker partner, Lundy Insurance, proudly took part in a heartwarming holiday initiative. Together, we contributed to the festive magic by setting up a Storybook Christmas Wonderland tree - a breathtaking Nutcracker-themed masterpiece - designed to captivate visitors and raise funds for a meaningful cause. As part of the market’s cherished holiday tradition, our Nutcracker tree was one of many stunning bespoke Christmas trees showcased at the event. Each tree was meticulously decorated with unique themes, transforming the venue into an enchanting holiday wonderland. The initiative not only celebrated the joy of the season but also served a greater purpose: raising vital funds for the Children’s Treatment Centre & Foundation of Chatham-Kent. Throughout the event, visitors had the opportunity to purchase tickets for a chance to win and take home one of these beautifully crafted trees. With each ticket sold, the community came together to make a difference, as 100% of the proceeds were directed towards supporting children in need through the Children’s Treatment Centre & Foundation. Beyond the dazzling holiday décor, this initiative highlighted the power of generosity, bringing together local businesses, organizations, and individuals who share a commitment to making the season brighter for children and families. We are incredibly proud to have been part of this event and grateful for everyone who contributed to its success. Together, we turned holiday magic into meaningful impact.

The OMIA meeting included addresses from President, John Taylor, Chair, Marg Torrance, and Incoming Chair, Kevin Inglis.Marg shared examples that illustrated how we have grown as mutuals while staying rmly connected to our communities and policyholders. He provided an overview of ongoing projects on a Corporate Governance Framework, Climate Risk Disclosure, data alignment, and promoting mutuality. He also reported on the mutuals contributions to the Insurance Bureau of Canada’s recent media campaign on “Protecting Our Tomorrows” focused on how insurers work to protect individuals and communities from severe weather events.John thanked retiring Director at Large and outgoing Chair, Marg Torrance, for her service to the mutuals and congratulated her on her exceptional forty-year plus insurance career.Incoming Chair, Kevin Inglis introduced his theme for 2025/26: “A Strong Legacy & Secure Future.” He also shared his family’s involvement with the Ontario Mutuals through four generations since 1901.Awards During the awards luncheon the Presidential Merit Award was presented to Sharon Dittmer of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association and the Outstanding Contributor Award was presented to West Wawanosh Mutual. We also recognized 13 directors who completed the OMIA Directors Certication with modules on governance, the business of insurance, insurance nance and accounting.Information SessionsThe non-delegates program was a trip to “Little Canada” a unique exhibit with accurate and striking models of Canadian landmarks and communities from coast to coast.During the afternoon, delegates participated in educational sessions on the following topics:• Financial Services Regulatory Authority – Updates and Open Discussion• Behind the Scenes with Renewable Energy• Ontario Mutual Automobile Plan – Discussion and Interactive Panel • The Bigger Picture in the Board Room• Climate Risk and Insurance Meet in the Headlines• Emerging Leaders Panel – Beyond Recruitment, Engagement, and RetentionThe 99’s provided our banquet entertainment and this was followed by the ever-popular Farm Mutual Foundation Auction in the OMIA and Farm Mutual Re hospitality suite. The auction raised proceeds of over $35,000.The 2025 OMIA Annual ConventionMarch 26th to 28th, Toronto

pg. 62Dress for the Decades Celebration We were pleased to recognize our recipients of the Presidential Merit Award and the Outstanding Contributor Award at our Annual Convention Luncheon. The Presidential Merit Award is presented annually to an active mutual director or staff member who has demonstrated a deep commitment to mutuality, service to the association, and accomplished leadership. Presidential Merit Award winners are generous contributors to their fellow mutuals and have a favourable inuence on other members of the association. This year’s winner is Sharon Dittmer of OMIA, pictured below (right) with Chair, Marg Torrance. Monday September 24th, 1984, on Eagle Street in Cambridge, was the rst day on the job for OMIA’s new Accounting Benets Clerk, Sharon Lewis. The accounting world that Sharon joined was a little less complicated than today. OMIA’s total revenue in 1984 was $236,000 and the net income was a healthy $7,500. Sharon became the fth employee of OMIA. We now have 32 employees.Over the 40 years since, Sharon’s career path has paralleled the growth of the mutuals. Her commitment to lifelong learning was evident from day one, as she completed accounting and payroll certications, as well as achieved her CIP designation from the Insurance Institute of Canada. In 2005, Sharon was promoted to Treasurer and Manager of Administrative Services. In her almost 20 years in this role Sharon has shaped and improved OMIA’s member pension and benet programs. Sharon’s dedication to creating a sustainable yet competitive group pension and benets program has been a major contributor to the mutuals ability, as small businesses, to attract and retain staff, leaders, and board members. Sharon is the lead staff liaison with OMIA’s Benets Committee, she started the Human Resources Roundtable, and has overseen the OMIA salary survey. She has also been an unsung hero at the OMIA Board table, developing compliance reporting, governance calendars, and sample board policies that have found their way out to many other mutual board tables.Above all, Sharon embodies the mutual spirit at OMIA. She sets high standards for our work but understands the human side of building a team and providing responsive service to members. She is a trusted colleague and friend to all of us here today. On behalf of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association and its members we are proud to honour a very worthy recipient of the Presidential Merit Award. The Outstanding Contributor Award is presented each year to a member company that demonstrates leadership and service within the mutual system. This year’s winner is West Wawanosh Mutual. On December 20th, 1878, a meeting was called at the West Wawanosh Township Council Hall, as to whether it was “expedient to organize a Fire Insurance company upon the Mutual Principle”. The meeting records show 70 votes for yes against 12 no’s and so the storied history of West Wawanosh Mutual began. West Wawanosh has always followed a neighbour-helping-neighbour philosophy. This was never more evident than on August 21st, 2011, when an F3 tornado directly struck the town of Goderich with damage occurring up to a swath of The 2025 OMIA Annual Awards RecipientsCathie Simpson (middle) and Traci Radford (right) receive the award from OMIA Chair, Marg Torrance.

pg. 631.5 km on a track 20km long. In responding to this historic event, West Wawanosh Mutual demonstrated the resilience of farm mutuals, the importance of a mutual reinsurance system, and the benet of having a local, community-based insurer. Above all, West Wawanosh showed dedication to rebuilding people’s lives after a devastating event. In the mutual community itself, the West Wawanosh Board and Staff have been unselsh contributors to their fellow mutuals. Traci Radford was one of the founding members of OMIA’s Accounting Advisory Committee that spearheaded and delivered the conversion strategy for IFRS-17. Brad Vanstone was an OMIA Director from 2012 to 2021. In his year as OMIA Chair in 2018-19, Brad’s theme “Embracing Youth and Technology” focused on two critical strategic factors for mutual insurers. Brad’s practical, plainspoken approach was both effective and “adventurous”.Director Mary Garriock was an original member of the Collectivde Board and CEO Cathie Simpson was a member of the OMIA Marketing Committee and the Auto Rate Filing Committee.Director Lloyd McGillivray joined the OMIA Board as Group C Director in 2024 and serves on the Legislative Affairs Committee. We were very pleased to honour West Wawanosh Mutual with the 2025 Outstanding Contributor Award.

pg. 64A Message From Sue: This note is sent to the many folks that I owe thanks to over the years that have been associated with the mutual insurance company world in Canada. Whatever your role in your company, it has been a privilege to work with you on the telephone, in the training room, in meetings, in person, by email, on Zoom or on Teams. I knew it wasn’t going to be possible to express myself to all of you in person, so I hope that this is a reasonable substitute. I consider it an honour that I have, in my years on staff at your trade association, been given the opportunity to learn from you, with you and for you, the changes and adjustments that insurers must take as we reect the changes that society takes. Whether those changes be in the equipment policyholders use in their lives or operations, construction of buildings, stock, produce, livestock, business types, accounting standards, legislation and regulation (Federal and Provincial), the impact of municipal differences, regulatory requirements and so on, I have always been proud of the fact that this group of insurers would regularly respond with an attitude of, “If we do this, how will we do it? And does it make sense to do it now, later, or at all?” I miss you and the work already and trust that you will keep the OMIA ofce on their toes with questions and concerns when you have them – they are a talented bunch of people. If there is anything that you think I might be able to help you with, somebody there will let you know how to nd me. Best wishes and deep respect to all of you – individually and collectively. Thanks for allowing me to learn and grow with you for the past 39 years. RetirementsOMIAAfter 39 years of service to OMIA and our member mutuals, Sue Baker retired on April 30th this year. Sue signed on as Insurance Training Coordinator on January 13th, 1986. Over her time with OMIA, and in her role as Manager, Insurance Services, Sue has trained virtually everyone in the mutual system on something. She has “called the roll” many times, written countless policy forms, endorsements, and guidelines, and answered questions day and night. Sue was our Presidential Merit Award winner in 2016. For the past ve years, Sue has been the moderator of one of the best innovations to come out of lockdown: the daily, then weekly, now monthly Wednesday morning member open forums (and Cambridge weather report) calls. Over these 39 years, Sue has helped shape the identity of OMIA. She has never wavered in her commitment to mutuals and their policyholders. No one has been more dedicated than Sue to the spirit of mutuality and grass roots insurance. Sue will be hanging up her school bell to enjoy retirement and we wish her success in what lies ahead even if it includes keeping on with the bagpipes. We thank her for all her contributions.
