John Taylor, PresidentOntario Mutual Insurance AssociationOur Mission: To serve and strengthen our mutual insurance community. Our Vision: Grassroots insurance at the core of thriving communities.OM News is produced by the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association on behalf of our member and associate member companies. Our Spring Chapter Begins After a little confusion from our groundhog friend, I think we can safely say spring is ofcially in the air - and with it, a dose of renewed energy for the months ahead. We kicked off the season with our Annual Convention in Toronto where we welcomed over 640 mutual colleagues and special guests to just about three days of networking, information-sharing, and business meetings. This is always a highly anticipated event and a reection of the hard work and successes of the past year.Of course, our main success story, as mutuals, is our ongoing connection to community. This shows up in many ways, through sponsorships, donations, volunteering, and promotion, but is always a reection of where we come from and where we intend to be in the future. Our 2024 Chair, Marg Torrance, has something to say about that on page 4.Welcome to another new season. We hope it’s a sunny one.

pg. 4A Message from OMIA ChairMarg Torrance, HD MutualBy the time you read this, we might now be experiencing some spring-like weather for good, after a “winter-like” spring and a “spring-like” winter! I hope you are all ready to enjoy all the wonder that the warm weather brings us!With the Annual Convention and Neil Shay’s successful year as Chair behind us, I would like to take a moment to thank Neil for his calm and wise leadership of our Board and Association over the past year. The entire Board of Directors is a true pleasure to work with as they diligently serve the members of our association. It has been such a good learning experience to look back on Neil’s theme of “Always Building” and other Chair’s themes and messages, as well as the many editions of this newsletter to see the incredible and inspiring work that has been done! I have learned, and continue to learn, from all that they, and all of the mutual people have accomplished over our rich history.I am truly honoured and humbled to serve as your OMIA Chair this coming year. I know it will be a busy and fast year, so I will be doing what I can to “Live in the Present” and just enjoy each moment! We are all well aware that we’re facing many challenges in this industry and in our communities. As mutuals, we also know that we have each other to help us work through these challenges. We’re stronger together! I look forward to witnessing the continued collaboration and creative problem-solving that our members continue to demonstrate, as we lean in to “future-proof” our people and help create a better future for generations to come. So, I’m excited as we anticipate a year of living out the theme of “Learning (from the past), Living (in the present), and Leaning in (to the Future). I hope to hear your stories of how you’re experiencing each of these elements of the theme. What have you learned from each other, your community, your past accomplishments, and challenges that have helped shape you and your organizations and made you who you are today? I would like to continue on Steve Quinn’s Theme of “Our People, Our Communities, a Celebration of Success” by seeing and hearing all the rich stories of how we show up in our communities by actively dedicating our time and resources in so many different ways. I’m amazed at the commitment and energy that so many of you demonstrate day in and day out. I look forward to meeting with you and hearing from you over the coming months as we celebrate together all that we learn, are engaged in, and are anticipating in our future.Yours in mutuality,Marg Torrance

pg. 5OMIA held its annual Ontario Mutuals Queen’s Park Day at the Legislature in Toronto on March 5th. Forty-ve mutual members travelled to Toronto to meet with MPPs and staff for informal discussions on our role as mutual insurers. While this is an important chance to talk with MPPs on how mutual insurers benet their communities, it is also a chance to hear from MPPs and staff about issues they are working on and that they are hearing about in their constituencies. Our luncheon reception was attended by more than 35 MPPs and many more of their staff. We were also invited to meet directly with Premier Doug Ford who invited us to his ofces and spent time sharing his general outlook and views with the group.Promoting the concept of mutuality with our MPPs is important work. Mutuals are often one of the few remaining main street businesses in rural Ontario and have grown to be very signicant employers within their respective communities. We play an important part in the competitive landscape of insurance (Ontario Mutuals are the 6th largest property insurer in the province and 12th largest auto insurer - and, we remain the primary farm insurers.)The OMIA Legislative Affairs Committee would like to thank all of the individuals who took the time to come to Queen’s Park and the mutuals that supported the event. We were certainly struck by our MPPs high level of awareness and appreciation of the contributions that each of the mutuals make to local communities and economies. It was also encouraging that the new MPPs in attendance were interested to learn more about the mutual business model and the unique role we play as policyholder-owned insurers.Mutual members and supporters! pg. 6A Message from OMIA Past Chair, Neil ShayThe past year has been a treat for me. Part of the role of Chair is the opportunity and responsibility to represent the association and membership at many industry events and meetings. To listen rst, learn, represent our interests, and yes speak out a little bit too. I have enjoyed meeting so many of you (scores? hundreds?) and getting to know long time colleagues even better. And thank you for being gracious on those occasions when I had to sneak a peak at your name tag! Although some may consider mutuality as an elusive concept to dene, we know it when we see it, and I’ve had a unique chance this year to see it out there in the open, displayed by the people and longstanding organizations that are always building mutual insurance. A Chair from the recent past said the core purpose of mutual insurance is “service to the policyholders.” We current and future leaders will do well to adhere to that purpose. It has been such a privilege to work with John Taylor, the past and present Board of Directors, and the entire OMIA team. And with you the mutual insurance community. Thank you for the opportunity to serve. Now let’s learn, live, and lean in to 2024. Neil ShayPast Chair

The collaboration with numerous broker partners has also been a driving force behind the initiative’s success in growing food security in communities across the province and building meaningful connections with Members.Tim Shauf, CEO of The Commonwell stated, “Our Impact Report tells the story of how our SEEDit and L.E.A.F. initiatives are ensuring that more families, individuals, and organizations across the province can build capacity for what is to come.” By shining a light on these efforts, we hope to proliferate the collective good that mutual insurance companies contribute to communities across Ontario. pg. 28HTM InsuranceIn November 2021, HTM suddenly lost a valued member from our claims department. His passing was a great loss to his young family and to all of the HTM staff. Brandon was in the process of building a new home at the time he passed away. Brandon’s wife, Chantelle, and Habitat for Humanity approached us to partner on Build for Brandon. From October 31st to November 4th, over 50 volunteers from HTM Insurance along with friends and family honoured the memory of Brandon by committing over 400 hours towards getting the main oor ready for the second level oor system to be installed on a seven-unit building. We were proud to be part of giving seven local families the opportunity of home ownership. In addition to supporting the build site, HTM Insurance participated in our Team Build Challenge peer-to-peer campaign which raised over $10,000. During this week, the team took a pause to host their annual curling bonspiel at the West Northumberland Curling Club. With the wonderful support of our brokers and business partners, we also helped raise money for our build. All participants brought an unwrapped toy as well. The toys were donated to the Salvation Army Christmas Hamper program. The overall total of the funds raised by HTM Insurance has not been released but we appreciate all that they were able to contribute, on and off the build site.Heartland MutualWe’re pleased to report that our 2023 iHeart Community Fund provided over $200,000 to the communities we serve. pg. 31Ayr Farmers MutualWe were pleased to host our rst ever Pumpkin Giveaway this past fall.We invited the local community to come to our ofce in Ayr to enjoy warm apple cider, local apples, and fall treats. Our friends at Moore Farms supplied the picture-perfect pumpkins and we were so happy to see them displayed on porches across the community! This was the rst time pumpkin picking for some families, and it warms our heart to know we had a part in that. Ayr Farmers Mutual Green Committee hosted their annual Fall Roadside Clean Up on October 4th. The team gathered and hit the streets of Northumberland to clean up garbage. We lled over 10 bags of garbage! Afterwards, we enjoyed a delicious lunch, including soup from The Raw Carrot. Thank you to the team for helping make our neighbourhood a more beautiful place to live and help to protect rivers, streams, and wildlife. Staff recently volunteered at Food4Kids Waterloo Region, helping package 970 individual bags of baby carrots that were distributed to children living with chronic hunger. Food4Kids Waterloo Region provides healthy food packages to children ages 1-14 from severe food insecure homes during weekends and school breaks, when kids are not in school and unable to access school nutrition programs. Consistent hunger, even just over weekends and extended school breaks, can set a child back for life. Most people aren’t aware that there is a signicant number of children living with chronic hunger in our community. To learn more about Food4Kids Waterloo Region, visit www.food4kidswr.caThe holidays are all about giving back, and we’re so proud of the Ayr Farmers Mutual team for their incredible contributions to the 2023 end or year food and clothing drive. We were able to spread joy to many local families this holiday season thanks to their generosity and efforts! In partnership with Neighbours Helping Neighbours Ayr and North Dumfries, we were able to help “Keep Ayr Warm” through the winter. We collected cold weather essentials like gloves, winter hats, socks, scarves, and items that will warm families up from the inside out, like soup, coffee, tea, and hot chocolate.Last year, our employees committed to a minimum of 525 community volunteer hours and exceeded that goal with an astounding 787 hours of service in our communities! This included many environmental initiatives within the community including roadside clean up, growing a vegetable garden and donating the food to various user groups, education from the Region of Waterloo on reducing waste, and a local Horticultural Society showing us how to start a vegetable garden. Here are some of the ways our team members gave back:

pg. 32Ontario Mutuals are long time supporters of the Rural Ontario Institute’s (ROI) Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program, an experiential executive leadership program for those who want to shape the future of the agriculture and food industry and make a positive difference in rural communities across Ontario. This year, we’ve extended our support to the ROI’s Rural Change Makers Program, which shapes emerging leaders in rural Ontario to lead community development solutions with their communities. This group of change makers is building rural development solutions in over 25 rural Ontario communities, from southwestern, eastern, central, northern and northwestern regions. Over 85% of the change makers are equity-deserving youth working together to give back to their communities and improve the lives of others, with over 10 youth leading projects in southwestern Ontario. The group marked the halfway point in their leadership journey with an Ignite Action weekend in Huron County in January. At this event, young leaders practiced leadership skills they have been building since the fall of 2023, and began to formulate their action plans for the community economic development portion of their program. It was a wonderful and productive weekend with valuable contributions from attendees, as well as mentors and coaches like Community Futures Huron and Huron County leaders. The change makers are undertaking social enterprise, business or non-prot start ups that meet community needs - from mental health and addictions to newcomer attraction, agricultural enterprise, child care and youth programs, food security, Indigenous programs for elders and youth, literary and LGBTQ2+ festivals, cloud kitchens, environmental and climate action initiatives, lm documentaries, and business succession planning. The ROI will be connecting with more change makers over the coming weeks in regular coaching sessions to further develop their project pathways and support them throughout their community works. We’re excited to celebrate these achievements in the work of these amazing emerging leaders, and the impact of your gifts and contributions that are instrumental in coaching these dreams toward action.Discover more at ruralontarioinstitute.ca/changemakers“Thank you again for your sponsorship. I want to tell you how AALP made a personal impact on me. I spent eight years on the road as a long-haul driver, hauling livestock all over North America. I enjoyed my job and learned a lot of real-life lessons on the road. My joke is I went to “life university.” After six years on the road, my best days were when absolutely everything went wrong - I had to use my brain and problem solve.I started my AALP journey with no intentions of leaving my driving job. Through the rst two seminars and learning from the workshops and my classmates, I identied that I needed a change. I applied for a job at Skills Ontario as their Mobile Classroom Driver and Program Facilitator - I was a successful candidate.I still use my higher-class license but now teach students about the skilled trades through experiential learning. I came on just in time to help launch that program. The rst year I saw over 40,000 visitors with students from 408 schools. My program had such demand that we put in a proposal to the government to get funding to build three more. We received the funding and I was offered a promotion to be the Manager of the “Trades & Tech Trucks Program” which oversees the government Skills Development Fund project for the three new units. If it wasn’t for AALP I would not have the skills to be where I am. Thank you again.”Ontario MutualsAdvanced Agricultural Leadership Program Member Testimonial

pg. 33The Grow Our People Unconference is designed to help those who work in agriculture and food in Canada – to build new skills, grow deeper networks, and gain a renewed sense of enthusiasm for our agri-food sector. “We call Grow Our People an ‘unconference’ experience as it’s unlike any other event in agriculture,” shares Brenda Trask, event co-founder. “We created it to bring people together from across sectors with a focus on people and skills, and have some fun at the same time.” Register yourself, your board, or your team today.Find out more at www.loft32.ca/growourpeople. Ontario Mutuals proudly sponsor the Co-operative Young Leaders (CYL) art project. Each year, the artwork project focuses on a different co-operative principle. Last year, the CYL paid tribute to Principle 4 – Autonomy and Independence. Campers thought about what the words autonomy and independence mean and how a co-operative can balance this while ensuring that they remain true to the co-operative principle and the needs of everyone. As you can see from the artwork below, many felt that it was important to respect everyone’s view and their need for autonomy; The most important thing was working together for the good of the co-operative. CYL used the rings as a symbol of the Olympics where the world competes for their country, but all come together to share in the experience and cheer each other to victory. This year the artwork project will pay tribute to Principle 2 – Democratic Member Control. CYL will be producing a gratitude chain where participants and facilitators will talk about democracy, advantages to being a member and what role democracy plays in our cooperatives and society in general. CYL is a series of week long summer camps for young people ages 13 to 18. This unique experiential learning program brings together youth from across Ontario to develop their leadership and communication skills in a fun, safe, and secure environment. Participants develop self-condence, learn from inspiring guest speakers, and have fun with traditional camp activities set in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Since its inception in 1967, over 3,800 young people have gone through the program, thanks to all the amazing organizations that have supported it over the years!Visit www.ontario.coop/co-operative-young-leaders

This is a wonderful opportunity to reect on over 100 years of company history. In 2014, three like-minded and long-standing mutual insurers formed The Commonwell in the name of protecting individuals, together. Rooted in the belief of the common good, shared optimism, and ongoing support, the name, The Commonwell has become synonymous with trust, reliability, and sustainability. CEO Tim Shauf likens the concept of The Commonwell to a vital community resource – a common well – where people gather to draw water collectively, essential for sustaining life. Tim asserts, “There is no community that can exist or persist without a reliable water source. The ‘common well’ encapsulates the idea of individuals converging at a shared source to secure the sustenance of life.” This analogy is as close an approximation to the essence of Mutuality as you can get - fostering community, restoration, life protection, and a long-term focus. Reection is as crucial as setting a vision for the future, and for The Commonwell, that means a strong commitment to continued growth and scale, ensuring exceptional value for our members.Erie Mutual

pg. 56We were pleased to recognize our recipients of the Presidential Merit Award, the Outstanding Contributor Award, and the Distinguished Service Award at our Annual Convention Luncheon. The Presidential Merit Award is presented annually to an active mutual director or staff member who has demonstrated a deep commitment to mutuality, service to the association, and accomplished leadership. Presidential Merit Award winners are generous contributors to their fellow mutuals and have a favourable inuence on other members of the association. This year’s winner is Jeff Consitt of Farm Mutual Re. Jeff is the Senior Vice President and Chief Operations Ofcer for Farm Mutual Re and leads the IT, Innovation, Data and Insights, Project and Change Management, and the Business Operations Groups, in addition to quarterbacking the strategic planning process. Jeff’s long road to his current leadership role dates well back into the now shadowy days of the 1980’s. The Consitt family has provided a multi-generational level of commitment to the mutuals, and in that tradition, Jeff has been a leading proponent of mutuality, alignment between mutual organizations, and solving problems with a practical yet ambitious desire to innovate and create mutual sustainability. Congratulations, Jeff, on behalf of the Ontario Mutual Insurance Association and its members. The Outstanding Contributor Award is presented each year to a member company that demonstrates leadership and service within the mutual system. This year’s winner is North Blenheim Mutual Insurance Company, located in Bright, Ontario. It’s through the efforts and generosity of mutuals such as North Blenheim that the mutuals can continue to grow and thrive in a competitive insurance environment. We are very pleased to recognize North Blenheim Mutual as our 2024 Outstanding Contributor. OMIA presents the Distinguished Service Award each year to an individual who has retired from the mutuals after a long and noteworthy career. In creating this award in 1987, OMIA recognized that the mutuals’ legacy of resilience, collaboration, and dedication to mutuality was built through the efforts of remarkable individuals who had devoted their career to serving policyholders and their fellow mutual colleagues. Their individual contributions and groundwork created a legacy that continued well past retirement from their mutual careers. This year’s winner, Ross Lincoln’s career has been exemplied by energetic participation. As a mutual leader, Ross was a champion of mutual insurance, and supported and developed the team at Grenville Mutual, with a deep commitment to improving and creating mutual business models for today’s policyholders. At Grenville Mutual, Ross fostered an environment where board members and staff were empowered to participate in mutual events and committees, and to contribute to numerous association projects and initiatives. Ross was also generous in making the Grenville network available to help the Ontario Mutuals keep a strong presence in Eastern Ontario events such as the Ottawa Valley Farm Show, the International Plowing Match, and 4-H Ontario. It’s our distinct pleasure to recognize Ross Lincoln. The 2024 OMIA Annual Awards Recipients
