A Message from OMIA s Chair John Stirk The Ship of Theseus and the Value of Policyholder Ownership One of the oldest thought experiments in western philosophy having been discussed by both Heraclitus and Plato as early as 500 BC involves the Ship of Theseus It is supposed that a legendary hero Theseus sailed his famous ship into a great battle and was victorious The ship was subsequently docked in a harbour as a museum piece but as time went by some of the wooden parts began to rot and were replaced by new ones After a century every part of the ship had been replaced The question is then Is the restored ship still the same as the original This concept can be applied to the ownership of a mutual insurance company Over time several generations of policyholders have been replaced by new ones yet it is generally accepted that the ownership of a mutual insurance company has never changed This is the goal of the owners that drive the strategic direction of a company Companies with stable and longer term ownership tend to reinvest more than their counterparts and have a propensity to make decisions farther reaching into the future Stable ownership by the policyholders has meant that the goals of the mutual insurance companies have never wavered The desire for value in insurance products fairness and community investment is the same today as it was a century ago Mutual insurance companies after nearly two centuries due in large part to the stability in ownership provided by the Mutual Policyholders are still standing for a reason John Stirk Chair Ontario Mutual Insurance Association 4
