pg. 4A Message from OMIA ChairMarg Torrance, HD MutualIt’s hard to believe that I’m now eight months into the role of Chair of the OMIA Board. What an exciting, rewarding, and yes, busy time this fall has been! I continue to be honoured to serve as the Chair of this great Association, working with a tremendous group of colleagues. We’ve made some difcult decisions this year that involved a lot of listening to our members and each other. We are a group that can have tough discussions and always come to a unied decision.I’ve been fortunate to see so many demonstrations of this year’s theme, “Learning, Living and Leaning In,” as I’ve met with and heard from so many of our member company managers and directors. We are a community that shares, cares, and learns from each other at every opportunity. Some of the highlights of past few months include: The Farm Mutual Re Summer Meeting in Chatham; the NAMIC Annual Convention in Denver; CAMIC’s Annual Convention in Niagara Falls; Strategic Planning for OMAP; Regulatory Review Committee session with several FSRA executives in attendance (that relationship is really starting to gel); the IBAO Convention in Toronto; and probably my top highlight so far, the P&M Conference recently held in Ottawa. There were great speakers and insightful educational sessions, and a fun-lled gathering complete with costumes, a photobooth, fortune-telling and dancing. It was so great to see such spirit and energy amongst colleagues and friends! Check out some of the fun pictures in this newsletter.Next on the Learning adventure is spending a day visiting each of our Groups at their Annual Meetings. It’s a great chance to hear from directors and leaders about the key challenges and successes they have experienced in 2024, and their priorities and plans for the future. The OMIA Board has spent a good amount of time working on our strategic plan for the next 3-5 years. We distributed a survey to all members this summer and received a tremendous response. It’s encouraging and afrming to see the engagement and alignment of our community. There are likely going to be continued amalgamations and growth in the size of our individual companies. That means OMIA needs to adapt and respond to the needs in this quickly changing landscape. We have had a record number of quality applicants for upcoming positions on the OMIA Board which speaks to the bright future and engagement of our members. Thank you to all of the companies that have supported candidates. As we head into the nal weeks of 2024, I invite you all to LEAN IN! (And I recognize that this is not always an easy thing to do.) We’re living in increasingly changing - some would say tumultuous - times. We can get caught up in worry and anxiety – wondering about where things “might” go, like the impact of the political climate with our neighbours to the south. It can be overwhelming if we stay in that mindset. We need to pay attention, be aware, and take note of what is going on around us, yet at the same time, acknowledge the good and be grateful for what we do have. It’s a tough balance, but as a community and as individuals, we are resilient. We have been through a lot in our 150 plus years and we have learned a lot about what it takes to remain steady and stable through turbulent times. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Chair and for your support and encouragement. Wishing you all a safe, healthy and happy holiday season ahead.Mutually yours,Marg

pg. 442024 Presidents & Managers MeetingDistinguished Service AwardEach year, OMIA presents the Distinguished Service Award to a retired individual who has a made signicant contribution over the course of their career to mutuality and the mutual community. Our past winners have come from all parts of our mutual network, and each have brought a unique perspective to our mutual world. One characteristic that all past winners share, however, is in making their contributions freely and willingly for the benet of all their mutual colleagues and policyholders. This year’s winner is Bob Burley, who retired from the Board of HTM Insurance in 2021. It would be safe to say that Bob didn’t set out to take a leadership role in the mutual system. Bob’s involvement as a director at HTM and as a board member and Chair at OMIA reected a life-long dedication, shared with his wife Pat and generations of the Burley family, to community service and giving back to the common good.In his time on the OMIA Board, Bob combined a common-sense approach, a willingness to ask questions, and above all, a commitment to continuous learning and development. Despite a busy practice as a sought after Veterinary Technician, Bob’s work ethic always shone through in fullling his mutual duties, whether it was committee work, Group Meetings, or spending a day every year representing Ontario Mutuals at the 4-H Go for the Gold Championships at the Royal Winter Fair. At the HTM Board table, Bob championed doing the right thing for policyholders. At the OMIA Board table Bob championed doing the right thing for his fellow mutuals. Bob’s theme, Three Peas in a Pod, Policyholders, People, and Prot captured the key pillars of mutuality in the modern era. In October 2019, when Bob convened his P&M Meeting in Ottawa, little did we know that it would be our last in- person OMIA event for two years. A few months later on March 17th, 2020 Bob’s good nature and calm leadership skills were critical during the very rst days of the pandemic as the province declared a state of emergency, locked us down, and we all grappled with “signing on” to a new way of doing things. No description of Bob’s leadership style would be complete without reference to his sense of humour, which was never far from the surface and which he liberally used to make newcomers feel welcome and everyone else on their toes. It is our honour to present the Distinguished Service Award to our good mutual friend, Bob Burley.
