2Hitting Our StrideNo doubt we’ve all had that head scratcher of a moment where we’ve realized, “Yes, it is indeed summer again!” It’s been a strange year for all of us but we’ve been led back to the relative calm of a summer spent with a little more family and a lot more sunshine. It’s amazing to think of how far we’ve all come in our efforts to maintain our connections in both work and life. Somehow we’ve adapted - business has gone on in the virtual world, Ontario Mutuals have stepped up for their customers and communities, and we’ve all become bona de video conference experts. We’re happy to look toward a new season of stability with some in-person events, and yes, regular old work days with coffee breaks and colleagues. As always, the pages in this newsletter celebrate a mutual system that works together, in all ways, through all seasons.

4A Message from OMIA’s ChairI recently came across an article titled, “Why Some Companies Survive for Centuries”. The authors, from the Rotterdam School of Business, presented the concept that the following characteristics are key to the longevity of a company: a sense of identity, nancial conservatism, and an open management style. I thought it was interesting that each of these concepts applies to Ontario Mutuals.A Sense of IdentityIn the article, the authors concluded that,”A strong sense of identity is one of the clearest factors related to longevity.” Corporate identity is about how a company positions itself and its products in the marketplace through images and branding. It’s about how a business enterprise represents itself to the public. Our mutual identity is rooted in our history and the very reason we exist. Service to policyholders, integrity in business practises, and commitment to communities are some of the principles on which mutuals were originally created. These principles still dene our products and our customer service. They dene who we are. Mutuals have a clear sense of identity. Financial ConservatismThe mutual system has been built over nearly two centuries. Slow, moderate growth, with appropriate additions to retained capital, has placed our membership on solid ground nancially. Visionary leaders from our past saw the need for our own reinsurance company and created Farm Mutual Re. They also understood the advantages of a joint solvency guarantee which led to the Farm Mutual Guarantee Fund. Through long term, conservative practices, Ontario Mutuals nd themselves part of one of the strongest nancial systems in the country.Open Management StyleAn open management style refers to empowering employees by listening and responding to their ideas while allowing them do their work and think for themselves. So often we have experiences at places of business where customer service representatives are not empowered to deal with situations. They are required to ask someone else for direction or permission. My observation of mutual insurers is that they trust people to make responsible decisions, to think independently and to show creativity in their endeavours. Agents and Brokers are entrusted with representing mutuals to the public while underwriters assess the risk of accepting policies, and claims representatives negotiate settlements. An open management style is a strength of our mutual insurers.Ontario Mutuals: two centuries of crafting an identity, of nancial conservatism, and trusting people.Ontario Mutuals. Two centuries of building trust.Still standing for a reason!John Stirk, ChairOntario Mutual Insurance Association

16BCM INSURANCE We launched our Community Grants Program in 2019. Since then, more than $355,000 has been granted to non-prot organizations across the region. BCM’s goal through this program is to strengthen local non-prot organization’s capacity to continue to do their great work in serving Niagara’s communities. At a recent Board meeting, the directors approved allocating an additional $118,000 to the program for 2021.“We’re proud of the scope of groups and the variety of projects that we were able to support this year,” said John Dekker, Chair of the BCM board and a member of the Grants Committee. “This is the third year we’ve offered the program and we see the continued need for our type of grants program.” BCM grants will be used to support GAMRU South Shore Search and Rescue to buy search and rescue equipment to assist in a predicted busy 2021 boating season. Recognizing that fundraising for many groups was down signicantly in 2020, ve grants will be give BCM the opportunity to be the title sponsor for 2021 fundraising events held by the Kristen French Child Advocacy Centre, Carousel Players, Community Crew, Project Share and Autism Niagara. Person Centered Care’s grant will assist with equipping a new space for their programs, serving clients with special needs. Links for a Greener Learning are building an accessible walkway to their new greenhouse with their grant. As part of this funding, Heartland will sponsor over 75 registrations this fall for rst responders across the Waterloo Region to attend Farm & Food Care Livestock Emergency Response Workshops. These workshops have been designed to address the unique challenges involved in trafc accidents involving livestock trailers. Experience has shown that responders with livestock emergency training more condently respond to these situations in an organized and safe manner while minimizing the overall time on scene. This support demonstrates Heartland’s strong commitment to the agri-food industry that strives to meaningfully and proactively connect with non-farming audiences with the information that matters most.HEARTLAND FARM MUTUAL The annual Heartland Farm Mutual iHeart Community Fund is again in full swing, offering support and funding to causes that make a real difference in local communities across Ontario.Last year the iHeart Community Fund helped many local initiatives turn dreams into reality. 20GIVING BACKTHE COMMONWELL Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group’s SEEDit Program gives you and your community a chance to grow stronger. This innovative community program has a couple of main objectives. First, to help ease food security issues and second, to build gardening education, which will ultimately continue to combat food security and will have the benet of bringing communities together to do good. To spread the word (and the seeds!) far and wide, The Commonwell teamed up with local garden centres, offering more than 2,400 free vouchers for participants. SEEDit has sprouted into a vibrant community.“We’ve received hundreds of messages from the community saying how much they appreciate the chance to plant a garden this summer and to share their knowledge and expertise with others,” said Cassidy Allison, Marketing and Member Insights Specialist with The Commonwell. “SEEDit is inspiring families across the province to grow vegetable gardens and pay it forward to neighbours or local food security programs.”One garden centre in Lindsay gave away all their vouchers in a single day. Another garden centre has pledged to donate 1,500 lbs. of food to their local food bank. “We are excited about this program because the vouchers are seeding the start of a new way of caring for our community. The whole idea is to grow fresh produce for your family and share your harvest with your neighbours and local community organizations,” said Miki Paczek, Director Sales & Distribution.Whether it’s the single Mom who was thrilled to start her own vegetable garden for the rst time or the young boy who chose the SEEDit program as his passion project for grade 4, we’ve sprouted more than 800 members who have joined the Facebook community and are posting tips and sharing their expertise. Although all the vouchers are distributed, SEEDit is still welcoming you to join through the Facebook community. As part of the SEEDit Program, The Commonwell is also offering small grants to community gardens and local food security initiatives. Several grants have already been awarded. • Fenlon Falls Horticulture Society – Student Gardens • Community Development Centre Quinte – Community Gardens • The Table Community Food Centre – Allotment Gardens• Food To Share PEC• Privately Run Community Garden in Support of YWCA Peterborough Thank you to everyone who continues to participate with this program.

The new West Perth Village will be a seniors’ community that will be a blend of the Ritz Lutheran Villa and the Mitchell Nursing Home, all located in a country setting. The facility will aim to be a bright and spacious location lled with community and culture. It will be divided into four units, each with 32 beds, lounges, separate dining areas, and activity areas. Each of these four units will be designed to feel like its own neighbourhood.A long-term care facility should not feel like an institution; it should be full of care and compassion where the seniors feel included in the community that they are a part of (and helped shape). Tradition is honoured to be able to contribute to this project.

August 202127RETIREMENTSHow long have you worked at OMIA?I’ve been at OMIA for a little over a year. What is your favourite part about your job? I love nding new and valuable ways to meet the needs of the mutual community. Whether that means creating scenarios, 3D models, animations, videos, or inductive learning experiences, I am always looking for ways to help our members get the most out of our on-demand courses. What has surprised you most about working at OMIA? I started working at OMIA during the pandemic. Everyone was already working from home and to this day I’ve only spent a few days here and there in the ofce. However, I was pleasantly surprised by how warm and welcoming everyone has been and how much I’ve learned about my co-workers even though all our meetings are virtual. I now know who I should invite the next time I watch a horror movie, whose home-cooked meals I should eat (and whose I should avoid), and who I should call if I’m ever trapped alone in the woods. How do you help Ontario Mutuals succeed? Most people want to participate in continuing education opportunities, but not everyone can adapt their schedule based on specic class dates and times. Additionally, not everyone can make it into the OMIA ofces to take a course. With on-demand eLearning, you can take a course anytime and anywhere. And, as our on-demand course catalogue continues to grow, members will have increasing opportunities to learn and develop their skills. What is one thing you wish our member companies knew about eLearning?eLearning is for everyone! You don’t need to be tech-savvy to try eLearning. You don’t need to be progressing through a certication program to try eLearning. And you don’t need to be a super star pupil to try eLearning. Everyone can (and should) give eLearning a try. What is one interesting fact about you that you would like to share? I’m half Icelandic and like most people with Icelandic heritage, I love to knit with the unique Icelandic wool called ‘lopi’. Outside of work I spend most of my free time knitting ‘lopapeysa’ (traditional Icelandic sweaters).Pascale Swanson - eLearning DeveloperPascale Swanson eLearning DeveloperMEET YOUR OMIA TEAM MEMBERS

August 202133AALP CLASS 18 VISITS L&A MUTUAL The Advanced Agricultural Leadership Program (AALP) is an 18-month experiential executive leadership program for those who want to shape the future of the agriculture and food industry and make a positive difference in rural communities across Ontario. On July 7th, a group of AALP Class 18 participants got a glimpse into the community of Greater Napanee on a visit to L&A Mutual and their new and exciting building. The building stands proudly on the river’s edge. As you approach, it’s impossible to miss the distinctive hip roof and old silos. Once a co-op, and later a feed store, the venerable structure has been given new life as L&A Mutual prepares to take occupancy.L&A has a long history of celebrating and being involved in the community, a commitment that is clearly articulated in the restoration project with a focus on local stories and talent. A local artist is showcased in striking paintings on the silos, canvases across the ofce walls, and in a show stopping mural in the President’s ofce. Reclaimed bricks from the demolished Gibbard Furniture Factory were purchased for a donation to the local hospital, and repurposed into pillars on the main oor, simultaneously preserving a unique legacy of the community and reinvesting in it. Each carefully planned detail tells a story. The class was so thankful to be welcomed to tour this incredible homage to history and community.HOWICK MUTUAL In June 2021, our very own Emily Franken, Farm Underwriter, hosted a Virtual Dairy Goat Farm Field Trip in conjunction with Ag Scape and Farm & Food Care Ontario. BRUCE WITMERSo Long, NeighbourAt OMIA, when asked what mutuals are all about, we’ve been known to reply, “neighbour helping neighbour”.Since Farm Mutual Re and OMIA moved to Pinebush Road in 2009, we have been proud to share our stretch of Pinebush with Speedside Holsteins and Bruce Witmer. While Bruce didn’t help with insurance and we didn’t help much around the farm, we felt lucky to have Bruce and his herd as our neighbours. The pasture, pond, and red barn as a peaceful view from our front reception, reminding us of the many farms and farm families that we have insured for so many years.Bruce was a community pillar, with accomplishments too long to fully list right here, but among the highlights was being named Cambridge’s Citizen of the year in 2005 as well as a lifelong dedication to 4-H Club Leadership, Soil and Crop Improvement, and the promotion and improvement of the Holstein breed. We had an open house in 2016 when he dispersed the herd, and he shared just a few of his stories and experiences from “days gone by”. While the herd moved on, Bruce stayed on his neat little farm, south of the 401, right until the last, taking his leave on June 24th, 2021.The end of an era. So long Bruce, safe travels. August 202147ANNE HARMEROn July 27th, 2021, the mutual community lost a long-time friend and colleague with the passing of Anne Harmer in her 87th year.Anne was born in Montreal but lived over 50 years in Ontario. In high school she was awarded the Governor General’s award for highest marks across Canada and the award was presented to her by the Governor General. One of the early stops in her career was teaching 6 grades in a one room school that was heated by a wood stove. Anne’s husband, the late Mac Harmer, connected with FMRP (now Farm Mutual Re) in the mid-70’s. He was the second employee there, but Anne followed shortly as Treasurer and later, VP of Finance/CFO. They loved their work and the mutual system, working together in a small ofce on Eagle Street in Cambridge. Anne achieved her FCIP quickly. She also attended the Canadian Insurance Accountants Association course in Trenton, where she became a tutor for other students; one of those other students being Mac. She laughed about that Mac’s room became the “social hub” for after only the second night and that he wasn’t “as successful” at that course as she was!Over the years at Farm Mutual Re Anne presented the nancial reports to the membership, participated in training sessions, and attended mutual organizations to assist when asked. For many people in the mutuals, especially directors, she had the unique ability to make reinsurance understandable. Among the early beneciaries of this was PEI Mutual, who after Anne’s presentation to the board, made the daring decision to become a member of Farm Mutual Re, and in doing so helped set the stage to greatly broaden the scope of mutual reinsurance in Canada.Anne retired from Farm Mutual Re when she was in her early 60’s and shortly after was asked to be on the Financial Review Committee, focused on solvency supervision of Ontario’s farm mutuals. She was on that committee into her mid-seventies and continued to attend conventions and make presentations. Anne had many keen interests outside of insurance and pursued them in a big way. She had her own kiln to do ceramics and had a computerized knitting machine. During her 60’s and 70’s she had a 27’ RV and later bought a pickup truck and pulled a 17’ trailer. She had a cottage on Buckhorn Lake and another on Davis Lake in Kinmount, both were central gathering spots for her family, which includes 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.Anne was honoured with OMIA’s Distinguished Service Award in 2004. Her love of the mutual system has inspired two more generations of Harmers to work in the mutuals with son Alec at HTM and granddaughter Victoria at Trillium Mutual.Anne made many contributions over her years to the mutuals and will be greatly missed.
