2Thankfully, it’s still ip-op season! It’s August but there’s still plenty of sunshine ahead of us. Remember, summer doesn’t ofcially end until September 21st. Not that the fall doesn’t bring its own crisp energy! At OMIA, we’re enjoying the heat while gearing up for our fall schedule, including farm shows, new education opportunites, the IBAO Convention and the P&M Conference. Many of our mutual committees also begin to gather momentum for their new year plans. 4My rst four months as your OMIA chair seem to have own by! I have thoroughly enjoyed my role, and the opportunities it has provided me. I got to experience Maritime hospitality rsthand at the MAMIC Convention in Digby, Nova Scotia. We all had opportunities to learn, spend time with our eastern counterparts and listen to the banter about who has the best lobster (mine looked as if it had been on steroids.) My education continued at the NAMIC Managers Conference in Ashville, North Carolina. The quality of speakers was exceptional. One of my take home quotes is, “Leadership has nothing to do with your position or title.” This past spring was one of the most challenging for crop planting that most people can remember. For some insurance companies, the excess water resulted in substantial claims. It seems ironic that now our area could use some rain! One of my 3 “P’s” this year is for Policyholders. As it turns out, there seems to be an inux of people wanting to be policyholders of mutual companies. How we as individual companies respond to this demand is a choice for each company to make. You may see this as an opportunity or a concern but, as always. communication with your sales force, staff and board is so important!I hope everyone is having a great summer.Yours in Mutuality,Bob BurleyHTM Insurance CompanyPolicyholders,People, Profit.A Message from OMIA’s ChairBob Burley

(Create A Ripple Effect) philanthropy program recently donated $50,000 to local healthcare organizations as part of our annual “We C.A.R.E.” donation, in which the team does a surprise donation without local charities needing to apply to the program. On May 23rd, The Commonwell donated the use of our board room in Perth, and some of our team, to help with a local rst ever Radiothon through local radio station, Lake 88, for seven different charities. The team helped with technology assistance, guiding people, doing in-person donations, and even hosted a community BBQ.Towards the end of the day, with the donations from the community nearing $50,000, Tim Shauf, President and CEO of The Commonwell Mutual, made an exciting announcement live on-the-air that The Commonwell would make a surprise offering to match up to $30,000 in donations, to be split between the hospitals and CHCs. With that incentive, the phones lit up with personal donations ranging from $10 to hundreds of dollars. One Carleton Place caller donated $9,000 in honour of his 90th birthday! As this was such a great initiative and all of our ofces were engaged in the event, we decided to add another $20,000 to the total and donate to an additional four health care organizations in the other regions outside of the radiothon. The following organizations received funds through this donation: • Almonte General Hospital/Fairview Manor Foundation• The Carleton Place and District Memorial Hospital Foundation• The Great War Memorial Hospital Foundation• Smiths Falls Community Hospital Foundation • Country Roads Community Health Centre• North Lanark Community Health Centre • Rideau Community Health Services• Peterborough Regional Health Centre• Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation• Hawkesbury and District General Hospital Foundation• Alexandria Hospital FoundationJessy Hawley CPA, CGA, CFF, CIP Gary Phelps CPA, CMA, CFF, CFEadvisoryservices@davismarndale.com1.800.668.2167SABS Claims Commercial ClaimsLigaon Economic Loss ClaimsINDEPENDENT MEMBER FIRM

20GIVING BACKNORTH KENT MUTUAL We happily participated in Tampon Tuesday, a new program launched by United Way of Chatham-Kent and Women’s Leadership Council.Tampon Tuesday was created because menstrual hygiene products are one of the most requested, yet least donated, items at food banks. Women living in poverty face the added challenge of acquiring monthly menstrual hygiene products and it’s an even bigger challenge for women experiencing homelessness. Donations of hygiene products were dropped in the Pink Box at the lobby of our main ofce in Dresden. Donations were also accepted at our Chatham, Tilbury and Sarnia ofces. All products were delivered June 18th and the total amount raised was $30,000 in value.TRADITION MUTUAL In addition to sponsoring the 5th Annual Hike for Hospice in Stratford on June 5th, Tradition Mutual also put in a team of hikers for the event. We’ve been supporting the hospice through actions like this, and in 2018 we made a signicant donation to the hospice to help in the completion of their construction. Paul Burns, President and CEO, recently attended their Grand Opening Ceremony. We’re so proud to be able to support community driven initiatives that impact the lives of those who live here. TRILLIUM MUTUAL Staff volunteered and participated at the Community of Character Run in Listowel. The run aims to promote health and tness within the community.FARM MUTUAL RE / OMIA Another successful Adopt-A-Road event was held on May 24th. Farm Mutual Re and OMIA members of the Green Team collected about twelve bags of garbage on the stretch of Pinebush between the Franklin roundabout and Townline roundabout. The Green Team would like to thank all employees who came out to participate. OMIA and Farm Mutual Re will participate in the program again in the Fall.

August 201921GIVING BACKAYR FARMERS MUTUAL On May 2nd, Ayr Farmers Mutual held our annual Wine & Cheese Volunteer Appreciation Night. For the past several years, we’ve held two separate events, one in the spring which honours volunteers of local fairs, festivals and youth focused organizations and one in the fall which celebrates volunteers of youth and sport-based organizations. This year’s event saw the amalgamation of both and the result was a fun-lled evening of celebration, fellowship and donations. Volunteer representatives from over 30 organizations were in attendance to share stories from their experiences and collectively receive close to $25,000 in donations. We’re pleased to nancially support community organizations whose focus is on youth, agricultural and sport initiatives.NOVA MUTUAL We’re proud to be a long-standing supporter of Crime Stoppers of Haldimand & Norfolk. We believe in taking care of people and creating safe communities. By supporting Crime Stoppers, we can help ensure that community members are empowered to help take care of one another through the anonymous reporting system. Members of staff and our Board of Directors had a blast attending Crime Stopper’s Annual Murder Mystery Dinner Fundraiser in May. Here we are (above) with Crime Stoppers of Haldimand & Norfolk Chair, Neil Unwin (3rd from right).BCM MUTUAL Row, Row, Row. BCM Insurance took part in the Welland Dragon Boat Festival raising funds for the Welland Heritage Council and Multicultural Centre. Lots of fun was had by all, despite a few sore muscles the next day. Way to go team BCM!

22Learn more about FFCO at www.farmfoodcareon.orgOne year ago, OMIA pledged support to Farm & Food Care Ontario (FFCO) in their application for CAP funding through the Agricultural Adaptation Council (AAC) for the project: Livestock Emergency Preparedness - Farm Fire Prevention and Livestock Emergency Training. We’re pleased to report that the application was approved by the AAC review panel. Two other projects related to livestock emergency training or preparation championed by Equine Guelph and Beef Farmers of Ontario were also successful in receiving funding and FFCO will be working with these two groups to avoid duplication and build a cohesive response to livestock emergency preparation across all organizations. The project will have two main components:Training for First Responders and Livestock Truckers This project will offer one day training workshops for Emergency First Responders. Participants will better understand the unique situational needs of livestock truck rollover accidents and farm re incidents. A separate workshop for Ontario Livestock Trucking Association members will address responding to media, dealing with bystanders and other topics in a specialized session. Barn Fire Education and Prevention Information Barn res are devastating for Ontario’s farming families and represent a signicant animal welfare concern. Barn re prevention requires not only a practical understanding of barns and res, but also a sociological understanding of farmers’ attitudes and behaviors, along with an awareness of how the risks of farm res are perceived by farmers. This funding will be used to launch a multi-pronged information campaign that brings new and existing resources to life, using social media, print advertising and video testimonials. The goal is to move farmers from awareness of the issue to a desire to take preventative actions on their own farms. The time-frame will allow a presence at several farm trade shows as well. From FFCO: We look forward to working with Ontario Mutuals and plan to form a steering committee that can guide our resource development and act as subject matter experts in specic areas.GIVING BACK

August 201923WEST ELGIN MUTUAL What a great day! After all the rain during the previous week, the day turned out warm and sunny for our annual Longest Day of Golf. Our “marathoners” (Kelli-An DeCook, Matt Ross, Andrew Pearson, John McWilliam and Andy McTaggart) teed off at 6:30am and played golf for 12 hours (in the case of Kelli-An and Matt: 13 ½ hours). They were encouraged throughout the day by West Elgin Mutual staff, a team of eager golfers from Howard Mutual, local community members and some of our business partners who came out to play a round or two of golf in support of our cause. The day was a great success with the total raised “Fore the Kids” in excess of $10,000.Thank you to our fellow mutuals for helping us to help the kids!FARM MUTUAL RE / OMIA The Farm Mutual Re and OMIA 2019 Relay for Life Team proudly raised $4,135 in support of the Canadian Cancer Society. Thanks to all who supported the team’s fundraising efforts. Under clear skies, surrounded by music of performing artists, participants walked throughout the evening of June 7th at the beautiful Shade’s Mills Conservation Area. During a moving ceremony at sunset, each luminary lining the path was lit in memory or in honour of a person impacted by cancer. 24DUMFRIES MUTUAL We held our seventh annual charity golf tournament on June 20th at Savannah Golf Links. It was a great opportunity to thank our brokers and business partners while “golng against local hunger.” The weather held up for our 136 golfers most of the day and spirits weren’t dampened when it started raining! The day included a BBQ lunch, live and silent auctions and a steak dinner. We were thrilled to raise over $20,000 for this year’s charity, Flamborough Food Bank. This not-for-prot organization supplements food and personal care items for those in need. As we’re now based in Flamborough, we’re pleased to extend support to our local community.HOWARD MUTUAL We were the proud Corporate Sponsor of Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) - Chatham. In May, Howard Mutual helped PAWR change locations, a mere 100 steps away but still a massive undertaking for the organization. Howard staff carried boxes, cages and totes, dismantlement cages and doors, and cleaned up the old building over the course of two days. With Howard’s help PAWR was able to greatly reduce the downtime of their facility. PAWR thanked Howard on their website saying:“All good relationships start somewhere. Being a part of a great community helps, but what makes communities great are the people in it. The staff at Howard Mutual Insurance denitely make our community a better place to live.” To read the full article visit: pawr.org/howard-insurance-to-the-rescueGIVING BACK

26Drop It And Drive® (DIAD) is a Trafc Injury Research Foundation education program focused on preventing distraction-related road user fatalities and injuries. DIAD delivers both corporate and public school seminars. Each program is customized to the environment, features and context of the organization. Seminars are structured to be thought-provoking and interactive to maximize learning. Science and real-life stories are shared to motivate safer behaviours by providing participants with practical strategies and tools to minimize distractions behind the wheel.Since 2010, DIAD has delivered seminars to more than 60,000 workers and youth across North America. One such presentation was at the 2018 CAMIC Convention in Victoria BC. Inspired by the powerful and helpful messaging from DIAD, a group of eight mutuals decided to sponsor the program so that sessions could be held in their local communities. Through the support of the Mutuals the program was held in seven secondary schools reaching over 2,000 students!

28TRADITION MUTUAL Tradition Staff along with Fire Prevention Ofcer, Tanya Bettridge were in attendance of the 2019 Ontario Pork Congress in Stratford this year. The show seemed a little slow this year, given that the weather was so great and lots of farmers were on the elds. The weather was important however, as it made an impact on the Tradition Team, who also participated in the Annual “Hog Jog” which is held during the Pork Congress each year. The Hog Jog is a 3.5km or 10km Run (walk, stroll or jog too if you like) which contributes its net receipts each year to a charity in the area. This year, the charity was L’Arche, which is a facility that supports independent living for people with disabilities in Stratford. They have recently purchased an additional building that they hope to use for day programs and activity space. TOWN & COUNTRY MUTUAL We’re a proud sponsor of the Strathroy-Caradoc Cancer Golf Tournament (SCCGT). Our volunteers and participants included Jennifer Timmermans, Tina McKeen, Eric Gagne, Chris Hodgins, Lee Jensen, Dennis Sinclair and Jeff Williams, as well as Pat Greenway and Curtis Goodhand from Goodhand Insurance. This year’s tournament was the most successfull one to date, raising over $85,000. The funds raised from the tournament have allowed SCCGT to purchase mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy equipment used for the detection of breast cancer at its earliest stage resulting in shorter wait times, better treatment options and improved outcomes.GIVING BACKStrathroy-Caradoc Cancer Golf Tournament Volunteers

The pain comes from the cycles and cycles of edit-check. If data quality is kept clean at the entry level, stats submissions take no more than 3 minutes a day!CS: The data requested to be reported is necessary. We begin with the outcome that analysts need and lter down to nd the best/easiest way for Mutual’s to report. August 201951Ontario Mutuals is proud to be the presenting partner of the Ontario Queen of the Furrow competition. The competition allows young women to promote and increase their involvement in agriculture throughout their communities. During the competition, the Queens enhance their leadership and public speaking skills and act as role models for young girls to inspire them to get involved in agriculture. Annually, there are hundreds of young women across the province who compete in Queen of the Furrow competitions. The competitions are rst held at a regional level. Regional Queens become ambassadors of their communities and their local Plowmen’s Association. Throughout the year the Queens attend many local events, farm shows, fairs, and the Ontario Plowmen’s Association Annual Convention. In September, the Queens head to the International Plowing Match where they compete for the Ontario Queen of the Furrow title. They are judged on their plowing ability, appearance and deportment, an interview, a prepared speech and an impromptu speech. Last year’s winner was Derika Nauta of Oxford County. OM News had the opportunity to catch up with Derika to ask her about her reign as Queen and what the Queen of the Furrow competition means to her.Where did you grow up?I grew up just outside of Tavistock, Ontario.Have you (and your family) always been involved in Agriculture? In what capacity?Yes, we own a family dairy farm. I was also an active member in 4-H.What does the Ag community mean to you?I believe that agriculture is more than just farming - it’s a vital, complex industry that unites us all together to help support the world’s needs. As a proud member of the agricultural community, I know that we are never alone and that we will always be stronger together. I believe that growing up in this environment has shaped me into the tenacious, caring person I am today.Where did you get your post-secondary education? What did you study and why?I studied Health Science and Biology at the University of Western Ontario (2018) and am now in my second year of studying medicine at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine where I hope

Page 52

52to one day open an integrative health clinic near my hometown. Growing up as a competitive gure skater, I have always had a passion for health and wellness. However, it wasn’t until during my undergrad where I really developed an interest in physiology and realized that an individual’s overall health is actually inuenced by a combination of factors that can be managed through education and proper lifestyle changes. The opportunity to thus educate, guide, and empower patients while developing meaningful relationships solidied my goal in pursuing a career as a naturopathic doctor. How did you get started in the Queen of the Furrow Competition? Why was it important to you to get involved?Although I have grown to love living in London (and now Toronto), there was always a part of me that missed living on the farm and being a part of the agricultural community. I decided to compete for the Oxford County Queen of the Furrow title to not only connect back with my rural roots, but to also use the title as an opportunity to educate and inspire my peers back at school, and of course in the community, who may not have been as familiar with agriculture. What did you like best about the Queen of the Furrow competition?Competing for the Ontario title at the International Plowing Match in 2018 was such a great experience. During the competition, we were judged on our plowing abilities, our interview and our speech. The top ve nalists were also judged on their answer to an impromptu question. Although competitions can sometimes bring out the worst in people, I was happily surprised at how professional and kind all the competitors were and left the competition with friendships that I will cherish for a lifetime. Getting to experience all the International Plowing Match & Rural Expo had to offer during the couple days was also fascinating. I was blown away with how big tented city was. There was great food, lots of talented music acts, awesome vendors and spectacular entertainment and live demonstrations. My favourite performances were the Canadian Cow Girls, the rodeo, and the Dancing Tractors. There was just so much to see and do that I almost forgot it was a competition. What do you think you’ve learned through this process?Winning the title of Ontario Queen of the Furrow has been a remarkable experience thus far. Over the year, I have been given the opportunity to connect with people from a variety of different agricultural backgrounds and as a result, I have been able to develop a deeper understanding about the different industries within agriculture. I have found it very fascinating to see how farming styles can differ within Ontario and am always excited to hear about each family’s agricultural history. Not only has learning more about my agricultural community increased my competence and appreciation for the industry, but the opportunity to represent such an amazing organization has also helped me develop valuable life skills such as public speaking, communication and interpersonal skills, relationship building, leadership, time management, and condence. How has your year been as the Queen so far?I feel as if the quote, “Time ies when you’re having fun” perfectly reects my experience so far. It is hard to believe

Page 53

August 201953that in a few short months my reign will be over. I am so grateful to have the opportunity to travel all across Ontario promoting the Ontario Plowmen’s Association and the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo, which is held in Verner this year. Some of the events I have participated in so far include farm shows, school visits, parades, fairs, agricultural conventions and meetings, local business visits, and of course, plowing matches.Do you see yourself staying in the Ag Community in some capacity?Yes, participating in an integrative health practice near my hometown, which has such a strong agricultural presence already, is very important to me because I believe that those that live in rural areas can sometimes face several challenges when trying to access health care, and since farming can be a 24/7 job, a healthcare appointment that is hours away isn’t always feasible. Another important health issue that I believe is not often talked about in the agricultural community is mental health. Farming, although rewarding and enjoyable most days, is not free from stress. Farmers are constantly faced with situations in which they often have little to no control. This prolonged stress can lead to many health issues in the future. And so, by practicing in my rural community, I am able to provide support to those who may need it.What are your thoughts on the importance of women in Agriculture?I believe that women can and are doing extraordinary things for our industry when given the opportunity. It is not uncommon to see shared or fully female-run farms now which I believe is an amazing step in the right direction. I was very fortunate to grow up in an environment where I had the same expectations and responsibilities on the farm as my brother, and so, I have always believed that no matter the challenges, we, as women in agriculture, can do anything that we desire to do. The Queen of the Furrow program was also designed to give women a voice in this male dominated industry. I am proud to be a women in agriculture and look forward to continuing to break stereotypes within the industry.TRUST THROUGH EXPERENCE QUALITY .TRUST.
