A Message from OMIA s Chair Terry Knight I started to put my thoughts together a while ago in preparation for giving these remarks at the AGM in Toronto What a difference one month makes I have restarted this many times over the last couple of weeks as every day seems to add a new and different twist to life As we transition to different ways of doing our normal routine this will also be a little different than what we re used to So take this as doing my part to aide social distancing My Background I grew up on a small farm just outside of Edys Mills in Lambton County and if you don t know where that is it s right next to Oil Springs I would call it a small cash crop farm with some animals As kids we had some beef cattle pigs and chickens to look after The farm is still there today but with fewer buildings and no animals I grew up with two brothers and one sister A piece of Terry Trivia I have a twin brother My dad was my first coach He had a lot to do with my fastball career and where that led me We had the field of dreams in our front yard and the neighbourhood kids would come and play almost every day My Childhood Home Edys Mills Lambton County I left home to attend college at Conestoga in Kitchener and I didn t make it back to Lambton County after graduation I now live in Brantford and have four children of my own three girls and one boy the oldest is 25 and the youngest 21 I followed in my dad s footsteps and was the first coach for all of my kids and I m Oil Springs Lambton Country extremely proud of all of them In my free time I love fishing playing golf and spending time at the cottage I am the CEO at North Blenheim Mutual which is located in the hamlet of Bright My whole mutual career has been at North Blenheim where I began as a Claims Adjuster in 1994 I ve spent the last 15 years as the CEO I didn t know much at all about the mutuals before North Blenheim about how connected and close knit they are It didn t take me long to see it though It was my second day and I was at the claims roundtable in Cambridge led by Sue Baker thinking what a friendly and open bunch of people there were in the room 4 My predecessor and mentor Bruce Davis always said If you ever have the opportunity to volunteer for anything to do with the mutuals do not pass it up Two opportunities presented themselves first the ice storm of 1998 I along with a few other mutual claims adjusters went to Perth Ontario and helped Lanark Mutual with their large number of ice storm claims The second opportunity was sitting on the original fuel oil committee which put a fuel oil spills manual and protocols in place for mutuals to use

BOB BURLEY Thoughts from Past Chair Bob Burley OMIA Past Chair We ve been in the insurance industry for many years and have weathered storms before None of us has a road map to follow in these times but we will come out the other side The date is April 13 2020 and I m sitting down to write my comments for OM News This has been something I ve been putting off because I m at a loss for words I ve written it in my mind many times but nothing seems to make sense in these changing times I keep going back to my Three P theme for my year as Chair and I think it makes sense to talk about that but maybe in a different context We re still here to service our policyholders even in these changing times How we re doing it may be different but it s a top priority as we navigate our way through this situation Finding some flexibility for our policyholders as they face financial hardships is a sign of the caring we have for each other The second P is about the people who work in our mutual offices It s a very trying and stressful time as management tries to protect and care for all staff Most everyone is working from home to reduce their exposure while dealing with home life pressures We re social beings and we miss interacting with co workers who are also our work family 6 There are still items of a regulatory nature that we re required to fulfill and the staff in the OMIA office have stepped up with innovative ideas for how to stay connected in these unique times The daily morning meetings give everyone a small sense of connection to other mutuals through the sharing of ideas and concerns My third P profit is pretty much up in the air at the moment We ve been in the insurance industry for many years and have weathered storms before None of us has a road map to follow in these times but we will come out the other side We may look a little different but we will survive It has been my absolute honor and privilege to serve as your OMIA Chair this past year Your board of director s at OMIA is made up of talented and caring individuals who work tirelessly on your behalf Thanks also go out to the OMIA staff for their help and guidance over the past year Stay safe stay healthy Bob Burley HTM Insurance Company
