O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R 2 M U T U A L N E WS NOVEMBER 2017 CH AIR S MESSAGE A Message From Our Chair Happy Autumn 2017 This year I have attended many meetings and conferences on behalf of Ontario Mutuals and have travelled to some beautiful locations The trip to our Presidents and Managers Meeting in Collingwood Ontario was on a warm autumn day with stunning Fall colours While attending the Group E Annual Meeting in Kemptville Ontario the Group participated in determining what their Annual Meetings should include I know all the Groups struggle with this especially the Annual Meetings that occur shortly after the OMIA P M Attending the Farm Mutual Re Summer Board Meeting offered a glimpse into the reinsurance climate of today Having had the opportunity to speak to their international reinsurance partners it became apparent that Farm Mutual Re really have fostered unique and positive relationships with their partners abroad The NAMIC Annual Convention held in Denver Colorado provided timely education on the legalization of cannabis and the insurance implications of similar changes coming to Ontario Many Mutuals see this as an opportunity to expand Ag offerings However we may also expect that automobile collisions will increase upon legalization as was the case in Denver We were pleased to host this year s Presidents and Managers Convention in Collingwood The keynote speakers were engaging and entertaining while teaching us how to create loyalty from our clients and how to be more efficient with our time in the midst of information overload Along with the various governance sessions we were reminded that the time line for our strategic planning should be for the longer term and should be strategy focused not operationally focused A one year strategic plan will not prepare us to remain relevant in future years with the many changes coming our way The IBAO Convention also focused on remaining relevant in future years including the advancement of technology The CEO Panel included comments from Heidi Sevcik CEO of Gore Mutual who spoke of the advantages and bright future of the mutual model I learned from my discussions with various brokers that they realize that the Mutuals are a long term strategic partner who provide stability to their operations As this is the last edition of the OMIA News before the holiday season and since I grew up on a turkey farm I wish to share my mom s best ever turkey gravy secret You will find it hidden within this issue I wish you and your loved ones a very Merry Christmas with a big juicy turkey and all the Best in 2018 The Van Daele Family Christine Ken Emily Laura and Julia

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S New Management Team CHRISTOPHER SCHULTZ has joined Bertie Clinton Mutual as the Claims Manager Christopher has a strong background in claims working for various large insurance companies in the GTA He will bring additional skills to our claims department and we look forward to working with him PAM SKIDMORE has joined Bertie Clinton Mutual as the Underwriting Manager Pam has a strong background in both Personal and Commercial lines underwriting and experience as a Business Development Manager She has worked for several large insurance companies and brings additional skills to our underwriting department to enhance our operational abilities RHONDA THOMSON has joined Bertie Clinton Mutual as the Finance Manager Rhonda has a strong background in general accounting including experience in facility management and human resources administration Rhonda has worked in both the corporate and non profit charity sectors in various accounting roles We welcome Rhonda s expertise and look forward to working with her RUTH STRANGES has joined Bertie Clinton Mutual as the Business Development Manager Ruth has a strong background in sales development and strategy In addition she brings experience in personalcommercial underwriting and marketing Ruth has worked for insurance companies and insurance brokerages and brings competitive knowledge of the Niagara Region 30 Years of Service Mary Domm came to the then Germania Farmers Mutual in 1987 shortly after Larry Bieman was named Manager Mary s hire increased the number of employees working at Germania by 50 Mary s responsibilities at the time included assisting Larry and his wife Carol with both Underwriting and Claims roles Over the years Mary has witnessed many changes and held many positions within the company which also included working at four different head office locations Congratulations Mary on 30 Years of Service to Germania 3

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R 4 NOVEMBER 2017 M U T U A L N E WS Annual Charity Golf Tournament Erie Mutual hosted their annual golf food drive on behalf of the Salvation Army Dunnville Food Bank on September 7th Bertie Clinton Cayuga Townsend and Wabisa Mutuals once again participated There was approximately 250 lb of non perishable food goods donated by golfing directors and employees of the Mutual Companies CAMA Finalist Heartland Farm Mutual is very excited to announce that our iHeartCommunity Fund has been selected as a finalist for the Canadian Agri Marketing Association s Best of CAMA Award for 2017 The Best of CAMA is the Academy Awards of agri marketing and is the industry s annual showcase of creativity marketing and communications expertise Seeing the impact the iHeartCommunity Fund has made to local communities across Ontario has been extremely rewarding and we are now very honoured to be receiving this national recognition for its branding and promotional elements A big thank you to our community advocates for helping raise awareness both for the program and for the local projects and causes that are close to your heart Heartland was proud to win a Best of CAMA award last year in another category and we will keep our fingers crossed when the winners are announced on November 9th in Regina Hospital Groundbreaking Retirement Dawn Vaskor retired from the Lambton Mutual Accounting Department at the end of August Dawn was a valued and loyal staff member of Lambton Mutual for 27 years We thank her for her dedication and wish her all the best with her new retiree status Halwell Mutual was invited to attend the ground breaking of the new Groves Hospital in Fergus in recognition of our recent donations The future hospital will even have a waiting area named after Halwell Mutual

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S 125th Anniversary Ayr Farmers Mutual is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2018 To mark this significant milestone a number of events are being planned throughout the year including a magazine featuring profiles of policyholders planting 125 oak trees in our surrounding communities donating 125 000 to local organizations and community initiatives and a carnival style family fun day in June everyone is invited Ayr Farmers was established in 1893 out of a desire to provide the residents of Ayr and surrounding communities with protection from devastating losses caused by fire At the first Annual Meeting on February 24th 1894 it was reported that the volume of insurance to date mounted to an aggregate of 805 060 representing 238 policies Ayr Farmers Mutual has continued to grow over the years but our principles remain true to the mutual tradition rooted in the pioneer spirit Ayr Farmers Mutual is proud to be an Ontario Mutual President CEO Completes DEP Program We are very proud to announce that Joe Dietrich has successfully completed the Directors Education Program ICD D through the Institute of Corporate Directors Rotman School of Management University of Toronto In the current evolving business and governance landscape the ICD D designation helps leaders be better at what they do This will ultimately create better boards and better businesses The ICD D designation represents a lifelong commitment to excellence in the boardroom a desire to stay current and to be a more effective leader Congratulations Joe 5

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UAL NE W S Groundbreaking Dumfries Mutual staff agents and board were thrilled to participate in a groundbreaking event on September 12th Shelley Sutton General Manager and Holly Huehn Board Chair proudly held shovels at the future site of their new office building located just south east of the City of Cambridge Also present at the groundbreaking were Alf Geerlinks Site Supervisor left and Phil Schiedel Project Manager right of Schiedel Construction Incorporated There is great excitement about the additional working space the building will offer and the bright future of Dumfries Mutual for policyholders The team plans to move into their new office next summer IBAO Convention This year s IBAO Convention was held at the Westin Ottawa Hotel and Shaw Convention Centre in Ottawa on October 25th and 26th The Ontario Mutuals trade show booth was well staffed by Mutual Company participants who had the opportunity to meet and greet attendees of the sold out event over one and a half days The hospitality suite funded by nine participating Mutuals drew crowds all night in fact while many of the suites were packing up we were still engaged in conversations with our broker partners our fresh popped popcorn certainly didn t hurt Kathy Cass and Patti Henderson Halwell Mutual Tammy Hickling Howick Mutual Fran Hibbert Edge Mutual and Rhonda Ryan Trillium Mutual OMIA Chair Christine Van Daele Westminster Mutual and Kevin Prong Edge Mutual Next year s event will take place October 17th and 18th at Fallsview Casino Hilton Hotel Niagara Falls Morna Foan and Ben Mullin Grenville Mutual A packed house at the Ontario Mutuals hospitality suite 7

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R 8 NOVEMBER 2017 M U T U A L N E WS Appointment Gerard McDonald joined the Board of Directors of The Commonwell Mutual Insurance Group on September 6th Gerard is currently the Registrar of Professional Engineers Ontario PEO the organization charged with the oversight of Ontario s 83 000 professional engineers Gerard received his MBA from the University of Ottawa and his Bachelor of Applied Science Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo Prior to joining PEO Gerard spent over 31 years in the Public Service of Canada working primarily in the transportation sector where he held various positions including ssistant Deputy Minister of Safety and Security at A Transport Canada Executive Director of the Transportation Safety Board Director General of Marine Safety at Transport Canada and Director of Regulatory Affairs at the Privy Council Office Gerard and his wife Norma have five children and spend most of their spare time at their country home in North Glengarry When not working Gerard enjoys struggling at golf trying to keep up with his children skiing cycling and the great outdoors Welcome Gerard Giving Back In August Lambton Mutual Director Randy Gilliard and Lambton Mutual Agent Chris Ravell presented a cheque for 1 000 to the Western Ontario Steam Threshers Association Promotion Farm Mutual Re is very pleased to announce that Emily McHugh has been promoted to Analytic Services Manager within our new Analytic Services Department Emily joined Farm Mutual Re in April 2011 in a Claims Support role and was promoted to the role of Statistics Analyst in April 2012 Most recently Emily has been performing the role of Supervisor of Analytics within the Business Development Department Throughout her employment with Farm Mutual Re Emily has exemplified our core values She has shown commitment to the organization through her continuous learning efforts courage through innovative strategic efforts and integrity as a leader in the Business Development Department Through these and many other endeavours Emily will be integral to the future success of the Analytical Services Department Congratulations on your new role Emily we wish you great success

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R 12 NOVEMBER 2017 M U T U A L N E WS In Memoriam The mutual community was saddened by the recent loss of our friend and colleague Stuart Warner Stu Howlett Stu was born on May 23rd 1924 in Delaware township and passed away at the age of 91 in London on August 13th 2017 Stu is survived by his wife of 63 years Marion and his daughter Linda McNeil and her family as well as a large extended family Stu began his mutual career in 1969 when following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather he joined the board of the Caradoc Delaware Mutual Fire Insurance Company in Mount Brydges In the 1980 s Stu stepped forward and was elected to the Ontario Mutual Board of Directors representing Group 4 In his time on the OMIA Board Stu chaired the Political Action Committee and the Financial Services Committee OMIA has long prided itself on its legislative affairs program and Stu was the driving force behind getting that started in the 1980 s He travelled thousands of miles of Ontario roads attending political events of all types to raise the profile of the Ontario Farm Mutuals In the 1990 s when the Political Action Committee became the Legislative Affairs Committee and the Roundtable program was created Stu was the founding chair In 1992 and 1993 Stu served as Chair of the OMIA Board Selecting the theme Facing Tomorrow Together Stu truly believed that the Mutuals ability to work together would determine our future success Following his service on the OMIA board Stu served two terms on the board of the Canadian Association of Mutual Insurance Companies CAMIC Stu had a great belief in people and in the value of hard work His generosity of spirit was a great connector At any gathering no one was standing on their own very long before Stu brought them into the larger group with his warm smile and innate ability to draw people in with a few kind words A modest man Stu combined his understanding of what makes people tick with his own knowledge and practical approach to the job at hand Although retired for many years from the mutual system Stu and Marion continued to keep in touch and were always welcome guests at mutual events Community Donation Habitat for Humanity Royal Canadian Legion Watford Branch President Robert Alcock received a cheque for 1000 from Lambton Mutual in August The donation will go towards murals to be painted on the fa ade of the Watford Legion building On Aug 23 2017 Kent Essex staff had the privilege of assisting in another Habitat for Humanity house project in Blenheim Cheque presentation with Lambton President Deb Van Eyk

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament Dumfries Mutual held its 5th Annual Charity Golf Tournament on June 15th raising 19 565 for the Cambridge Shelter Corporation The annual tournament serves two main purposes by raising money for a deserving local charity and thanking the partnering organizations Dumfries Mutual works with 139 golfers participated in a great day of golf at the Savannah Golf Links under favourable weather conditions Donations were raised through hole sponsorships a sponsored BBQ lunch player cards for mulligans a beat the pro contest and a putting competition and live and silent auctions A delicious steak dinner prepared by the golf course was enjoyed by all On an annual basis Dumfries Mutual selects a local charity who they feel is doing good work in the community and would make effective use of financial support Cambridge Shelter Corporation is a United Way partner agency who provides safe shelter as well as programs and services for people dealing with challenging life situations This nonprofit organization was developed from the Out of the Cold program in Cambridge which operated out of seven local churches during the winters of 1998 to 2005 Dumfries Mutual would like to thank all the sponsors and supporters of this year s deserving cause The staff agents and board of directors are already looking forward to the 2018 tournament 1 James Street South 4th Floor Hamilton ON L8P 4R5 www agrozaffiro com p 905 527 6877 f 905 527 4736 15

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S A Part of Canada s History Members of Erie Mutual were present at the dedication and unveiling of a commemorative marker on September 24th in the tiny hamlet of Canfield Ontario Haldimand County The granite marker recognized the Underground Railroad of the 1830s which provided a safe haven to people escaping slavery in the United States Erie Mutual was one of several generous financial contributors to this significant historical marker recognizing Canadian Black History in Haldimand County and Canada The official ceremony welcomed direct descendants of the approximately 127 black families who settled in the Canfield area by the 1850s Allan Hedley Director with Cayuga Mutual and Past Chair of OMIA was raised on the family farm just on the east edge of Canfield Hwy 3 and was also in attendance with his wife Renee at the dedication ceremony Among the first settlers were Stepney Street and his wife Lucy Canada who escaped from West Virginia in 1844 He eventually built a wooden Baptist Church at the intersection of Hwy 3 and Hwy 56 It was rebuilt as a brick structure after a fire and still stands today in the same location serving as a private residence Standing next to the ten tonne granite marker which holds the bronze inscription denoting the Underground Railroad are Erie Mutual Chair Warren Burger Mrs Sylvia Weaver Volunteer Member of Heritage Haldimand and Erie Mutual Director Mark Moesker George Phillips born into slavery near Baltimore Maryland escaped by crossing the Niagara River clinging to a log and eventually settled in Canfield via the assistance of the Underground Railroad He left behind his wife and nine children whom he never saw again He eventually remarried in Canfield had twelve more children and died at the age of 108 These are just two of the important stories that form part of Canada s history Mrs Sylvia Weaver Heritage Haldimand was the driving force in getting Haldimand County to erect this permanent marker with the assistance of the Canfield Community Center Committee The marker is situated close to the Canfield Cemetery where many family members of the early settlers are buried Descendants of the early settlers of Canfield Ontario 23

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R 28 NOVEMBER 2017 M U T U A L N E WS International Plowing Match The 2017 International Plowing Match was one for the ages This year marked Canada s 150th as well as the 100th year of the Match As Presenting Partners of the IPM Ontario Mutuals have a lot to be proud of Our tent boasted the Mutuals stage with all day entertainment and awards ceremonies we gave away our incredibly popular yardsticks nine Mutuals participated with their own displays inside the tent Trillium s own Rhonda Ryan is a member of the IPM host farm family the Ryans and one of our Mutual Directors Jacquie Bishop Howick Mutual had the honour of being the first woman to Chair the IPM Committee in all of its 100 years This year also marked our first of three years as Presenting Partner of the Ontario Queen of the Furrow Competition This is a valuable program that supports young women in agriculture and on a broader scale it supports the future leaders in our communities Ontario Mutuals couldn t be more aligned with or supportive of this valuable program Congratulations to the 2017 2018 Queen Kailey Donaldson of Halton County Also exciting was our neighbouring tent which held the five Huron County Mutuals Hay Howick McKillop Usborne Hibbert and West Wawanosh They hosted the Hockey Hall of Fame which came with trophies former NHL stars

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S signing autographs a mini rink and a top shot game The free mini sticks and numerous displays were a huge hit as well All told we had about 10 800 square feet of Mutual representation on Mutual Avenue Although the event had to close for one day due to unsafe wet conditions the weather couldn t dampen the spirits of the Mutual participants or the IPM visitors Justin Trudeau and his family even made it out to the plowing fields for a day Rubber boots on and mulch on the tent floor we continued forward and handed out every last one of our 5 500 yardsticks and 4 000 Ontario Mutuals bags by 3pm on Saturday the 23rd This event provides a wonderful opportunity for Mutual Members to connect with their agricultural community current policyholders and potential policyholders alike Next year s match takes place in PainCourt Chatham Kent from September 18th to 22nd 2018 We look forward to seeing your company represented there 29

O N TA R I O M U T U A L S N E W S L E T T E R NOVEMBER 2017 MUT UA L NE W S Business Development Restructuring Martina Kipouros As Farm Mutual Re continues to evolve and grow to support the sustainability and independence of the mutual community we maintain a strong focus on the knowledge skills and capabilities of our workforce to successfully meet our service promises to you Farm Mutual Re is committed to providing our members with agricultural product solutions consistent with the size scale and complexity of today s agricultural risks Farm Mutual Re also assists mutual insurers with targeting underwriting and pricing of commercial risks located Sharon Turnbull in their low density rural market areas We recognize mutual insurance companies must adapt to changes in farming operations and commercial activities in rural communities and maintain and possibly expand market share to increase premiums written The need to adapt is becoming increasingly important as agricultural operations move down the food value chain to processing distribution and the consumer To increase the value to our members in addressing these risks we have taken steps to divide our business development area into two main streams of service product services and analytics To support this change we have Halloween Spirit Westminster Mutual s Jeff Wettlaufer and Middlesex Mutual s Nancy Preston showed their Halloween Spirit on October 31st strengthened the team with the addition of a senior leader with expertise in commercial underwriting Matina Kipouros joined our team on September 27th accepting the newly created position of AVP Commercial Opportunities and Services Matina is an insurance executive with a Master s Degree in Administration and Planning and over 30 years of experience in the insurance industry with a focus on commercial underwriting Matina s most recent role was as Vice President of Underwriting and Marketing with Saskatchewan Mutual Insurance Matina will lead the Product Services Department at Farm Mutual Re Sharon Turnbull will take on a new leadership role within the organization in the capacity of AVP Integrated Analytic Services Sharon will be able to dedicate the required time to focus on development and delivery of analytical and digital information services that a mutual insurance company can integrate into its insurance operations to improve the efficiency and or effectiveness of its underwriting risk selection and premium rating With this organizational structure and leadership our business development discipline will be well positioned to deliver products and analytical services to empower and advance the mutual community 35
