O n ta r i o M u t u a l s N e w s l e t t e r 2 M u t u a l N e ws AU G UST 2 0 1 7 Ch air s MESS AGE A Message From Our Chair I have thoroughly enjoyed my first four months as your OMIA Chair What a great opportunity to travel across Ontario and meet even more employees and directors of our Mutual system One thing I ve noticed through all of my travels is the care and commitment each person has to their Mutual Company and the communities that they serve In analyzing today s insurance landscape there are positive indicators that bode well for the Mutual model Peer to Peer Insurance The introduction of peer to peer business such as Lemonade and Uber has absolutely promoted the advantages of Mutual Insurance Now is the time to market ourselves aggressively as the general public understands our model now more than ever before Go to YouTube and search for Ontario Mutuals to see why we re passionate about the Mutuals Younger Generations Value Corporate Social Responsibility The younger generation is brand loyal and expects brands to give back to society instead of simply making a profit They love companies that support their local communities and would rather purchase from them than competitors They are sick and tired of corporate greed so are attracted to our model of no shareholders or private owners Strong Capital Position As at March 31st the Guarantee Fund Companies held combined capital of over 1 18 billion In this era of technology disruptors we are well positioned to invest in any solutions required to suit today s consumer Superior Service Standards The fact that our Companies are policyholder owned means that we will excel at customer service Ask your brokers and agents who their friends and family are insured with and you ll find a high percentage insured with a Mutual Company We Have Cambridge OMIA and Farm Mutual Re are working hard to support your Strategic Plans The collection of accurate data supports R D initiatives which provides modern product development with accurate pricing We are well respected in the political and regulatory environments Cambridge provides the economies of scale and reinsurance protection that will enable your Companies to thrive I chose Our Passion is Mutual for my theme this year and with good reason As you read this edition of the OMIA News take special notice of all of the community events that are sponsored by our Mutuals Take note of the amount of funds that are raised by the Mutual Community for the various charities hospitals local 4 H clubs and many more worthy causes The Mutual model is the envy of many and its culture fits in quite well with today s consumer The OMIA P M planning is just about complete We have dynamic guest speakers lined up great networking opportunities all happening at the Blue Mountain Resort in Collingwood Ontario on October 23 24 2017 I look forward to seeing you there Christine Van Daele Westminster Mutual
