Beyond their military service, many veterans have gone on to become successful entrepreneurs, establishing and running their own businesses across various industries. These veteran-owned businesses not only contribute to the state's economy but also embody the resilience, discipline, and dedication instilled by military service. In this article, we will explore the impact of veteran-owned businesses in Oklahoma and highlight some inspiring examples of these enterprises.

Veteran-owned businesses are a vital component of Oklahoma's economy. According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), Oklahoma has over 82,000 veteran-owned businesses, accounting for approximately 10% of all businesses in the state. Oklahoma, often referred to as the "Sooner State," is known for its diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, and a rich history deeply intertwined with the military. July, in particular, holds significant importance for Oklahoma's military history, as it witnessed several pivotal events and milestones that shaped the state and the nation. Let us delve into the annals of time and explore the remarkable military history of Oklahoma in the month of July.

Fast forward to July 1889, and we witness another critical moment in Oklahoma's military history. This time, it is related to the famous Land Run of 1889. On April 22nd, 1889, the Unassigned Lands of Indian Territory were opened for settlement, leading to an influx of eager settlers seeking their piece of the American dream. However, it was on July 23rd, 1889, that the United States Army officially took control of the newly established Camp Supply, near present-day Fort Supply. The military's presence was crucial in maintaining law and order during the chaotic and often dangerous early days of the land rush.

As the 20th century dawned, the world plunged into the chaos of World War I, and Oklahoma played a vital role in supporting the war effort. In July 1917, Camp Doniphan was established near Fort Sill as a training facility for the newly formed 90th Division, composed of soldiers from Texas and Oklahoma. Thousands of young men were trained at Camp Doniphan before being sent to Europe to fight in the war. The camp's establishment in July 1917 marked Oklahoma's significant contribution to the war and the training of American soldiers.

Moving forward to the modern era, Oklahoma has continued to play a crucial role in supporting the nation's military endeavors. In July 1941, the United States Army Air Corps (later the United States Air Force) established the Oklahoma City Air Depot (now Tinker Air Force Base) near Oklahoma City. Tinker AFB became a vital logistics and maintenance hub for military aircraft during World War II and continues to serve as a major military installation to this day.

In conclusion, Oklahoma's military history is a tapestry woven with bravery, sacrifice, and resilience. From the Civil War to World War I and beyond, July has witnessed pivotal moments that shaped the state's identity and its contribution to the nation's defense. As we reflect upon these historical events, let us remember and honor the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve in the military, safeguarding the freedoms we hold dear.

Moreover, July is a time of celebration for the military community in Oklahoma. On July 4th, the state commemorates Independence Day, honoring the courage and sacrifices of the men and women in uniform throughout history. Festivities, parades, and firework displays take place across the state, bringing together military personnel, veterans, and civilians in a spirit of unity and gratitude.

Exploring Oklahoma's Rich Military History in July

One of the most significant events in Oklahoma's military history took place in July 1863 during the American Civil War. The Battle of Honey Springs, also known as the Battle of Elk Creek, occurred on July 17th, 1863, near what is now the town of Rentiesville. This clash between Union and Confederate forces marked a turning point in the war's outcome in Indian Territory (present-day Oklahoma). The Union victory at Honey Springs paved the way for the eventual removal of Confederate influence from the region, solidifying Oklahoma's role as a Union stronghold.
