FROM THE PRINCIPAL As long as I have been in education the overall consensus is that as educators we should be educating the whole child It is a buzz phrase in education and one that has years and years of research behind it It is a well known fact that educating the whole child is the right thing to do However it wasn t until I started teaching at O Hara 10 years ago that I truly experienced what it means to have the opportunity to provide an environment where shareholders sincerely collaborate to educate the whole child The culture of O Hara is one that looks at education through the lens of faith looks at each student as a beautiful child of God and every staff member is committed to contributing their gifts to help our students I watch our teachers and staff care for our students daily from Mrs Whitford handing out band aids to Mrs Demers teaching children to have Jesus in their hearts from Mrs Booth in the library striving to find books that inspire the love of literature to Mr Bloomer teaching students to dress for success on test days These are just small examples of the love that our staff shows towards the children that walk through our halls I love seeing the opportunities that grace our students all which come from the hearts of our teachers and staff In the mornings when I am greeting students simply saying Good morning it fills my heart when I ask a student How are you and the response I get is Blessed by the Best This is a simple phrase they have learned from our campus minister Mrs Jones and one that our students believe What a blessing to hear our students openly talking about their blessings during their school day Educating the whole child means ensuring that educational emphasis is placed on academics the arts physical development and emotional and social growth all while supporting the spiritual growth and journey of our students I am proud to say that at O Hara we truly do focus on educating the whole child with all our hearts There is nothing more precious than a child and we are blessed to have 525 precious children walking the halls of O Hara Catholic School every year With sincerest gratitude and many blessings to each of you Mrs Tammy Conway Principal O HARA CATHOLIC SCHOOL 3

Generations at O Hara THE LAING FAMILY L to R Emily 11 Joseph 17 Brent Michelle 81 Ashley 06 Patrick 09 Meredith 07 C ATHOLIC EDUCATION IS THE CORE OF MY MORAL VALUES IT IS THE ROOTS OF OUR FAMILY TREE IT HAS GIVEN US A MORAL COMPASS WHICH GUIDES US IN OUR DAILY LIVES This is how Michelle Gonyea Laing 81 answered when we asked what O Hara has meant to her family It was in 1971 that Michelle s older brother Joe III entered O Hara and commenced 46 years of history that would include 2 generations and 14 O Hara students Michelle entered Kindergarten at O Hara in 1972 graduated from 8th grade in 1981 and from Marist in 1985 Michelle s older sister Debbie and younger brother David also attended O Hara Sending their kids to Catholic school was important to her parents Joe II JoMae because of the lasting impression her dad s Catholic education at Bellarmine Tacoma WA left on him His time spent there reinforced his Catholic values and made him want to provide the same opportunity for his children In 1997 Michelle and her husband Brent enrolled their oldest Ashley at O Hara There was no question that O Hara would be the place for their children as a fundamental part of their faith journey where they would be surrounded by Catholic morals and values This June twenty years after it be O Hara Class of 1981 Graduation Picture Michelle is pictured in the 2nd row 4th from the left gan the Laing family s time at O Hara came to a close Joseph their youngest graduated in the O Hara class of 2017 He is the second to last of Joe JoMae s grandchildren to graduate from O Hara Margaux Gonyea 04 Madeline Gonyea 05 Ashley Laing 06 Meredith Laing 07 Patrick Laing 09 Emily Laing 11 Caroline Gonyea 14 and Ellie Gonyea 16 all graduated from O Hara before him Henry Gonyea 19 will follow in just a few years In addition to the 14 O Hara students Debbie s kids Meghan Kate Erin John attended St Thomas More Catholic School and Jesuit Catholic High School in Portland a sound testament to the value the family places on Catholic education Reflecting on her years as a student Michelle recalls the St Paul Tournament Shakespeare plays and St Mary s Choir as some of her fondest memories It s been fun to see that some of these experiences have been available for my children to experience as well She also recalls the positive influence the nuns who taught classes at O Hara during her years had and how much they helped to shape her Catholic education I would say Catholic education is the foundation to our life and a key component to our Catholic vocation and calling In their years as O Hara parents Brent and Michelle have logged thousands of hours volunteering at the school Michelle spent many years as a room parent and both Brent and Michelle coached sports teams when the kids were younger They chaired the school auction in 1998 1999 and 2000 Michelle served as the auction decorations chair in 2002 and together they were live auction chairs in 2008 Brent has served on the board of the Open Door Foundation formerly O Hara Catholic School Foundation for nearly 20 years including 8 years as President of the Board Michelle served as the Hospitality Chair for Accreditation a number of times and also as a Co Chair of the Open Door Capital Campaign in 2010 which raised 145 000 for the Foundation Endowment Fund for student scholarships As one might expect from a couple who has dedicated two decades to the O Hara community Michelle and Brent say the many life long friendships they ve made through volunteering and being involved at school are among the memories they cherish the most O Hara is blessed to have parents like Brent and Michelle as dependable and generous members of our community and we say goodbye for now with grateful hearts THE TIME I SPENT AT O HARA WAS REALLY SPECIAL IT ALLOWED US TO GROW AND LEARN IN A WHOLE NEW ASPECT WITH A CONSTANT FAITH IN MIND THAT IS SOMETHING NOT MANY PEOPLE GET TO EXPERIENCE AND FOR THAT I AM LUCKY BLESSED Emily Laing 11 ENTER TO LEARN GO FORTH TO SERVE 4

O Hara s Buddy Program Hagan Stephenson 17 pictured far left as a Kindergarten student with his older buddy Cade Miller 09 in 2008 09 and with his younger buddy Jaxon Bosch Pre K in May 2017 I THINK THE BUDDY PROGRAM IMPACTED ME BECAUSE WHEN I WAS LITTLE I LOOKED UP TO THOSE OLDER KIDS AND JUST GETTING TO SPEND TIME WITH THEM PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE IT MEANS EVEN MORE TO ME AS A BIG BUDDY KNOWING THAT I MADE AN IMPACT ON SO MANY LITTLE KIDS HAGAN STEPHENSON 17 Ellie K Gracie 5th Mobley Carter Heer 5th Jordi Alapont K FROM OUR TEACHERS Mrs Jane Sexton Our buddy time is by far the kids favorite time of the week I love watching the first graders form such positive relationships with their fourth grade buddies Whether they are sitting in Mass reading or enjoying recess together the older buddies are such good role models for the younger students Madison Tuski 8th Evalyn Carranza Pre K Mr Gavin McKinnon I love the buddy system for a variety of reasons My favorite aspect is that it offers a chance for the older students to become the teachers They rise to the occasion and really connect at a different level as they demonstrate their maturity and take on a leadership role while building relationships with the younger kids It is so much fun to observe the interactions between the older and younger students The younger students enjoy it due to the change of pace and perspective from the normal day to day routines They already look up to the older students so this gives them a chance to connect on a more personal level The younger students are able to build up trust and familiarity which leads to confidence Confidence in school is such a determining factor in student success My only regret is that we are not able to do it more Schedules and other conflicts can sometimes make it tricky to get buddy time on the calendar but making the effort is always worth it Parker Roscoe K Peter Christensen 5th Ms Jeanette Hurley One of the best things about having a PreS through 8th grade school is O Hara s buddy program As a teacher and mother I have seen so much shared excitement by older and younger buddies each year Moments that stand out are weekly time to play on the playground computer time reading cards crafts service projects safe walks back from Mass with laughter positive role modeling from older buddies and little buddies keeping our pre teens young at heart When she was in 6th grade my own daughter did not want to participate in choir because that would mean not getting to sit with her little buddy at Mass I thought that was so touching As a 2nd grade teacher my favorite memory was delivering handmade cards to 6th grade buddies at Outdoor School Second graders also received cards at First Communion from the 6th graders It was wonderful to watch these students read cards where they were told they were being prayed for in their experiences Paired buddies are partners for the year in faith education the arts and recreation ENTER TO LEARN GO FORTH TO SERVE 10 Martina Su ec 5th Sarah Lee K

switched to 2nd grade four years ago Do you have a favorite memory of your time at O Hara I have lots of favorite memories at O Hara The first staff retreat is one of my favorite memories That was such a special experience Another favorite memory was surprising the school with our flash mob Thriller dance at the Costume Strut I ll never forget the surprise and excitement from all the students and parents It was so much fun A favorite memory of mine as a parent was when my daughter started her first day in PreSchool I have loved having my children here with me Favorite Bible verse or quote The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow Do good anyway Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough Give your best anyway For you see in the end it is between you and God It was never between you and them anyway Mother Teresa MRS MARYANNE OBERSINNER How many years have you been in education 23 How many years have you been at O Hara 19 Why is O Hara special to you I love the they progress through eighth grade and beyond O Hara is a community To date what has been your most memorable year at O Hara and why My first year was very memorable I taught grades 6 8 that year so I got to work with lots of amazing middle school students I was a young teacher and trying to do my best to teach a completely new curriculum That is also the year the Saint Project began and Mrs Obersinner with L to R Jack Reichenberger Zachary Bernard Kaitlyn Mazur Ella Konnie 6th that first group of students gave me an idea of what it could eventually become A great year When you first came and no longer taught 7th and 8th graders Do you have a favorite memory of your time at O Hara My favorite memories are signing my first contract and each year s Saint Project Presentations Favorite Bible verse or quote His mother said to the servers Do whatever he tells you John 2 5 MRS BARB WHITFORD How many years have you been in education 21 How many years have you been at O Hara 21 Why is O at O Hara Catholic School The parents are so supportive They have showered our family with thankfulness and praise that has been so appreciated It warms my soul to know how many people really care about the secretary of the school To date what has been your most memorable year at O Hara and why I don t have a most memorable year as every year has so many special moments with students parents and staff I have enjoyed watching students grow up and then end up back here either as a parent or as a teacher When you first came to O Hara what did you do Has your job changed over the years I was hired as a secretary and am still blessed to hold this position My job has changed in so many ways due to technology When I first began this job I had a little Apple Computer with an 8 inch screen that used disks Can you imagine It has been fun to see how our school has progressed over the years and kept up with all of the technology that has passed through our doors Our school started out as a one room per grade level and has grown to a two room per grade level with the exception of PreSchool So my job has grown more challenging over the years with an increase of students and Mrs Whitford with L to R Blakely Landon Owen families which basically means I have more fun Kirkpatrick Charlie Cooley Oliver Londahl PreS Do you have a favorite memory of your time at O Hara My favorite most Art at O Hara Every Child is an Artist Mrs Julie Fulton Mrs Shauna Scott I have taught at O Hara for 8 years After teaching fifth grade I was very excited when the opportunity to teach Art came up 3 years ago I love teaching the Kindergarten through 5th grade Art classes The best part of my job is seeing the happy smiles of my students as they come in to Art class This is my 4th year at O Hara and I have been an educator for over 15 years I ve had the unique experience of teaching all ages spanning from PreSchool to high school I currently teach our PreSchool Pre Kindergarten and 6th 8th grade students I love teaching Art because there is nothing better than seeing the excitement the students have when they walk through the Art Room door and I love facilitating their creative side I also love teaching different medias and seeing a child find one that is their favorite and one they feel good at Art is a subject where there is no wrong answer and everyone gets the chance to be successful It is so much fun to inspire the students creativity and encourage them to experiment and push themselves I often tell people that I have the best job in the world I get the chance to open up a world of creativity and appreciation for art in the world around us that my students can carry forward with them in life I am so blessed to get to work with these wonderful children I truly appreciate that my job allows me to be creative on a daily basis and that I work in such a stimulating environment The students talents and abilities blow me away and I m lucky to be a part of their growth and development Mrs Fulton Mrs Scott create an atmosphere that provides learning opportunities on multiple levels O Hara parent and Art volunteer Janine Bryant ENTER TO LEARN GO FORTH TO SERVE 26

DONOR PERSPECTIVE The Open Door Foundation received a generous gift from Fr Bryce Mrs Deanna McProud to create a Scholarship Fund for First Graders To the O Hara Catholic Community We tithe We give away at least ten percent 10 of our income because we believe that God calls us all to do that and when we are faithful it pleases God and it brings many many blessings Usually we spread our tithe around to several worthy endeavors but upon receiving a family inheritance we decided to put the entire tithe into one place We decided to establish a scholarship endowment for first graders at O Hara Catholic School We did this for three reasons First we have grown to love and appreciate all of the good works that occur every day at O Hara The students and their families the faculty and staff and all other community members provide a wonderful environment for Catholic formation and nurture Second we think that helping first grade youngsters get a good Catholic foundation is critical for their faith development We decided to put our resources into the early stages of these youngsters pilgrimage at O Hara rather than at some other stage of their development Third and finally Fr Bryce has been the first grade priest for the last six years and he has a special place in his heart for the members of this particular age group We plan to continue to contribute to this endowment as we are able Any and all of you are welcome to contribute as well We believe this is of God and we are humbled and thankful for all the graces that He provides We pray you all God s richest blessings Fr Bryce and Deanna McProud THE OPEN DOOR FOUNDATION IS BLESSED TO ESTABLISH THE FR BRYCE AND DEANNA MCPROUD NAMED ENDOWMENT THIS FUND WILL AWARD NEED BASED TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS TO STUDENTS 1ST GRADE AT O HARA CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS FUND CAN BE MADE TO OPEN DOOR FOUNDATION MCPROUD FUND ENROLLED IN OPEN DOOR FOUNDATION 31
