Bob Bower 2020 ORMHOF Inductee Living the life of a Corvette enthusiast Bower caught the eye of BFGoodrich at a time when the Brand was in the early stages of marketing performance tires to car clubs He accepted the offer to go to work for BFG in 1977 and found himself at the Mint 400 as a pit volunteer The fixation transformed into a deep passion for off road From that day forward he would make a huge impact on the world of off road racing in a variety of roles Pit volunteer chase crew race team manager pit manager program manager winning co driver winning driver ESPN TV color analyst and teacher Bower s goal was to have a positive impact on whatever he was doing His philosophy of be alert listen to what people have to say and always use the truth served him well It was 1982 when BFGoodrich put him in the role of Off Road Program manager With very thin budget resources available the challenge was to provide support for the contracted teams and win races Bower s race strategy was very straightforward You start winning rather than finish winning Bower s vision was to establish a common direction on the race course and in the pits and bring all the teams into one big BFG team The direction we re heading is very very clear That is to be the best between the green and checkered flags Bower launched the BFGoodrich Pit Support program To this day the BFGoodrich Pits are arguably the most successful and widely used pit service in Off Road Desert Racing He would make detailed maps of the race course highways and chase roads KM mileage included along with other information like fuel and food locations The chase crews knew at any given time they could drive to the correct chase road and how long the drive should take Teams raced with a higher degree of safety for their chase crews because of those maps In the early 1990s Bower turned the map making over to BFGoodrich in order to make it available to the masses By widely distributing the maps all of the chase crews could support their teams with a higher degree of safety Bob wrote What About You a powerful piece that has been included in almost all pit books over the past 20 years It remains fresh and relevant today because of its absolute raw truth What About You is Bob s heartfelt advice to everyone in off road about safety and taking care of yourself and those you are with during the race Many are convinced What About You has saved lives over the last two decades Bob says he was simply speaking from the heart Over the years Bob has shown his passion humility and wisdom They are matched only by his unshakeable ethic There have been many young racers who have been helped along their way by Bower He s always been a champion of the little guy Sometimes it s a quiet conversation sometimes a few hours of highway windshield time other times simply introducing them to others in the sport who could help them get better Young stars like Robby Gordon Ivan Stewart Jimmie Johnson Ryan Arciero and Rob MacCachren all have had Bob help them along in their racing career in one small way or another For Bob Bower it has been a labor of love I never wanted to change things in our sport I just wanted to do what I could to help it along Bob s personal motto is Life Is A One Lap Race He seems to be running a rather good lap

Combining his passion for recreational off roading and competition rock crawling with his ability to learn understand and harness the power of early internet technology Lance and the Pirate4x4 com moderators brought the off road community together under the umbrella of an often rowdy and raucous forum format that can be politely described as we agree to disagree and channeling that opinionated energy into a strong voice for many important causes and campaigns LANCE CLIFFORD TIMELINE Lance Clifford gave me and fellow land use advocates the most prominent and influential platform for communication and engagement in the world said ORMHOF inductee Del Albright He did this freely and openly as his part of keeping our trails open and helping save our off roading sports 2000 Pirate4x4 com becomes the leading 4x4 website and Lance s full time job Lance Clifford was also a pioneer in bringing live coverage to off road competition and events Years before YouTube offered live streaming video Lance and his team brought live coverage of off road motorsports events and competitions to a quickly expanding audience through his work on Pirate4x4 com The off road industry is defined by its culture said King of the Hammers co founder Dave Cole Lance Clifford is uniquely responsible for not only forming that culture but also sharing it with the world As a network engineer and avid off roader in the mid 1990s Lance formed the website Pirate4x4 com around his club and their home trail the famous Rubicon Trail Pirate 4x4 com was the epicenter of advancement in technology competition industry news and most importantly social discourse I can say without reservation that King of the Hammers and the entire Johnson Valley OHV area would not exist without the reach and power of Pirate4x4 com and the leadership of Lance and his partner Erik Linker 1996 4x4 website created for The Pirates of the Rubicon 4x4 Club 1997 Bulletin Board feature added to Pirate4x4 com allowing users to add content The site becomes so popular that it exceeds the traffic limit of the Internet Service Provider ISP Pirate4x4 com had more traffic than all the other customers of the ISP combined 1998 Pirate4x4 com moves to new ISP that can handle the site traffic and continues to grow Early 2000s Pirate4x4 com begins live coverage of rock sports events including W E Rock UROC and RCAA using internet satellite dishes and bonded cell phones Early coverage was with live photos then to live streaming audio and as technology advanced live video Some of today s leading off road photographers and video production staff got their start at Pirate4x4 com 2002 Lance wins the RCAA Rock Crawling Championship Working with future Off Road Motorsports inductee Del Albright and others Lance adds a land use forum to Pirate4x4 com for the newly created advocacy group Friends of the Rubicon for the popular northern California off road trail Pirate4x4 com becomes the clearing house for all information Rubicon related Volunteer work fundraisers and trail work parties were all formed and organized through Pirate4x4 com Friends of Forums for other land use causes like Tellico Johnson Valley and Fordyce were soon added This began decade long land use focus for Pirate4x4 com leading to significant fundraising for land use causes and many trails and areas being preserved for public OHV use 2007 Baja 1000 class win W E Rock National Championship 2007 Creation of private Land Use Roundtable on Pirate4x4 com The Roundtable brought together nearly all of the pro access land ue advocates from organizations and areas of the country including future ORMHOF inductees Del Albright and Don Amador 2007 Pirate4x4 com provided live coverage of a new event called King of the Hammers despite the challenges of being in an area with no cell phone coverage Coverage of King of the Hammers in the early years helped the dramatic rise in the popularity of the event and the growth of the sport of rock racing known as Ultra4 2007 Launch of Pirate 4x4 TV Live hosted by Jessi Combs and Erik Camo Linker Aired monthly online in a LIVE format with a full production crew Pirate4x4 TV interviewed people in the off road industry and toured facilities of companies like FOX and Warn 2008 Baja 1000 class win W E Rock National Championship 2008 Virtual Land Use Rally for Tellico on Pirate4x4 com 2008 Pirate4x4 com team launches the Pirate4x4 com letter generator a convenient way for Pirate4x4 coom members to create personal letters to address land use issues Pirate4x4 com generated over 20 000 letters for Johnson Valley land use alone The letter generator was also used for Tellico Choke Cherry Canyon Fordyce and the Havasu Travel Management plans 2008 2012 Pirate4x4 com averages 1 million page views per day 2011 One of many land use fundraising campaigns Pirate4x4 com launches Blue Star program to generate funds for the pro access Blue Ribbon Coalition Raising more than 30 000 the Blue Star program made Pirate4x4 com the land use charity s largest donor 2012 Pirate4x4 com sold to Vertical Scope 2016 2017 2019 2021 Baja 1000 class wins Off roading is Lance s passion said Larry McRae of Zion Jeep Tours Because of his passion his skillset and his pioneering spirit many of the things we take for granted today are because of things he developed many years ago He changed the way we receive information on all things off road

Not one to seek out the limelight Vic Curl has worked tirelessly in the background of off road racing for over 50 years An influence on the history of the sport from its earliest days to its present incarnation Vic s career can be summed up in one word heart After years of success at Jeep where Vic established the standard for off road race service and support he expanded into on road support servicing the Renault Cup races in the mid 1980s Although this was the beginning of parallel offroad on road paths Vic s passion remained in the dirt Like so many others Vic fell in love with off road racing after witnessing the action just one time having driven his VW Baja Bug to the inaugural Mint 400 from his hometown in Corvallis Oregon Blessed with both intellectual and mechanical talent he was able to make a career out of his passion and has stood side by side with the legends of the sport many of whom are now his fellow inductees Upon leaving Jeep in 1988 and a brief stint working with Sal Fish and Bill Savage doing tech inspections for SCORE Vic began working for Cal Wells in 1990 Under Wells PPI and PSRG Vic helped to support Toyota and Ivan Stewart through the early 90 s This was also Vic s introduction to Yokohama Tire Corporation supporting their desert racing sports car racing and Mickey Thompson Stadium Series efforts His career began in 1976 with AMC Jeep as a Service Rep for the western zone In this role Vic was tasked with leading Jeep dealers across the Rubicon Trail as well as becoming a significant motivator behind the Mickey Thompson celebrity races in the late 70 s 1977 marked his first Baja 1000 where before the days of corporate sponsorship he used a custom hunting Jeep filled with parts to support anyone running a Jeep CJ or pickup The following year in 1978 Vic successfully lobbied Jeep to allow him to take a tractor trailer down to the Baja 1000 to improve the level of on site race support Formerly a mobile training unit the semi was idle until Vic retrofitted painted and licensed it to provide service to Jeep competitors While still a Service Rep he was not willing to see his plan fail so Vic earned his CDL so that he could drive the truck himself In what has become a normal site in Baja this was the first time a semi was used at the Baja 1000 In 2001 Vic ventured on his own with partner Chikara Cheech Yamauchi to start Trackside Performance and continued to service Yokohama s motorsports programs throughout North America As he had done earlier in his career Vic s ability in the boardroom would again be used with Yokohama First through driving the decision to sponsor and support Wide Open Baja tours and the Baja Challenge class in 2000 as well as ProTruck in 2004 In 2005 upon Vic s urging after a 10 year absence the company returned to supply tires for Cameron Steele in the top unlimited class Today Yokohama enjoys its largest presence in off road motorsports in the history of the company That position would not be possible without Vic and his relationship with Yokohama of 30 plus years that is still going strong In sum Vic established the concept of a true service organization in off road and his legacy is just that It s one of hard work vision persistence connection and integrity Since his first Baja 1000 in 1977 with Jeep through his PPI PSRG days to his present day venture with Trackside Performance Vic has maintained a willingness to help anyone in need Regardless of equipment sponsorship or corporate mandate his notion that the desert can be a lonely place especially at night would guide his decision making in the field and he never left anyone behind Vic earned a reputation early on as one of the sport s good guys and that integrity allowed his sphere of influence to grow That influence allowed him to secure manufacture involvement and investment and that manufacture involvement led to opportunities for drivers and teams that might have otherwise not been given a chance The off road community has given much to Vic and he has enjoyed every minute of it In turn he has helped to grow that community With the support of his loving and understanding wife Nancy he s been able to involve each of his four children Nikki Troy Shelly and Eric in the business Beyond that he s introduced the lifestyle to grandkids nieces nephews neighbors friends and general acquaintances Those lucky enough to have had Vic make that introduction have not looked back nor abandoned the off road community Some making careers in off road some continuing to volunteer all having a better understanding of what it truly means to live life off road

Jim Fricker was born on October 27 1935 in Hemet California at a maternity home There were no hospitals in Hemet at the time As a boy he played with the adventurous kid across the street Larry Minor ORMHOF 2005 After high school in 1954 Jim became a United States Marine until 1958 Upon his return with the help of the G I Bill he started trade school to become a mechanic By 1961 he completed trade school and a stint at the General Motors Training Center From 1961 until his retirement in 1991 Jim wrenched at the Hemet Buick Pontiac dealership where he met his wife Linda in 1962 Jim s first foray into off road racing came in 1969 with his friend Carl Jackson Jackson had secured a seat in one of the James Garner ORMHOF 1978 American International Racers Ramblers with experimental with four wheel drive Carl and Jim finished fourth in class and were the first of the Ramblers back to Ensenada Jim was hooked on off road racing He continued to ride with Jackson for three more years in Bill Stroppe ORMHOF 1978 prepared Ford Broncos Perhaps their greatest accomplishment as a team came in the 1971 Baja 500 when Bill Stroppe picked the duo to drive a stock Baja Bronco attached to a Sprite travel trailer It was a publicity stunt for the trailer manufacturer NORRA and most of the off road racing community did not give them a chance to finish within the official time limit of 30 hours NORRA started Carl and Jim last Fricker remembered Jim Fricker and Carl Jackson A little ways out of Ensenada I thought had better look and see how the little trailer was doing Man it was bouncing all over the place I ll tell you what that s the last time I looked behind me the rest of the race Through a myriad of flat tires and a stop to weld the hitch Carl and Jim came home with nearly four hours to spare for an official finish Legend status achieved After the 1973 season Stroppe moved Jackson into a Courier mini truck Good for Carl bad for Jim Fricker who is a tall guy and did not fit in the import pickup In what would be a fortuitous move for them both Jim Fricker moved to the Bronco of Rod Hall It would start a partnership that would last through 1994 Jim was generous with his time with up and coming co drivers teaching them how to prepare and execute a race plan One of those co drivers was Bob Bower ORMHOF Class of 2020 who recalls a trip to Parker in 1984 with Jim Bob remembers Jim talked about the sounds and smells of a healthy race car and the same for an unhealthy race car Of course there were stories in between lessons He talked about visually navigating terrain to stay in touch with where you were in relation to chase roads And then there was the lessons he offered on dealing with your driver For a guy who did not spend much effort to be out there and famous he had a lot to say Bower says that in his own 30 years of co driving there was always a Fricker lesson to be applied Sometimes the driver co driver dynamic seems like there is little respect for each other Nothing could be further from the truth between Hall and Fricker Although they did get an occasional dig in Hall was quoted on more than one occasion saying I m always willing to drop a door handle into the dirt if I am battling for the lead but if I do it ll be on Fricker s side At the 1978 Repco Reliability Trials in Australia while Rod was getting frustrated trying to pass a slow Russian competitor Fricker remanded Hall saying Listen if you want to start World War III why don t you just go shoot an Archduke That way racing won t get blamed And so it went back and forth for decades Jim Fricker was renowned for his mechanical abilities race planning and keeping his driver in the proper frame of mind At the 1984 Baja 1000 while on the beach north of San Felipe the Dodge s driveline got caught up in a fishing net that wrapped itself around the drivetrain Fricker with a pocketknife dove under the truck and spent over an hour cutting away the net to preserve he and Rod s string of 37 consecutive wins At the 1986 HDRA Fireworks 250 on the final lap with a big lead the Dodge lost all forward gears Jim Fricker jumped in the bed of the Dodge truck turned the cab lights around knocked out the rear window and navigated from the bed for an estimated 30 miles to the finish line There are scores more of these stories When Jim Fricker retired from the right seat he amassed an impressive list of wins Twelve Baja 1000s eleven Baja 500s or Internacional s eight Mint 400s and a host of Parker 400s Fireworks 250s Frontier 500s and 250s and many others Jim Fricker won races in America Mexico Australia and Africa As Jim Fricker takes his rightful place in the Off Road Motorsports Hall of Fame his legacy will be preserved for future generations of co drivers to learn from Written by John Elkin Off Road journalist and author of Bronco Racing Fords Legendary 4x4 in off road competition
