The Medrash in הבר רתסא relates that Rabbi Akiva was learning with his talmidim and noticed that they were beginning to drift off in middle of shiur. He digressed from the topic he was discoursing on and asked his students why רתסא deserved to rule over 127 countries. He answered that Esther merited this because she was a descendant of Sarah who lived for 127 perfect years. Rabbi Akiva’s digression is puzzling. Why did he interject this specific piece of information to get his students back on track? The ם״ירה ישודיח answers that one can view Esther’s kingdom as simply a collection of countries, and thus for each year of Sarah’s life, Esther merited an additional country. In reality, each country consists of states, cities, neighborhoods, streets and homes. Similarly, a year can be subdivided into months, weeks, days, hours, minutes and seconds. Rabbi Akiva was explaining that Esther’s reward was not because Sarah generally lived a good life that was worthy of reward. If Sarah had slacked off for a week, a day, or even a second – there would have been a resulting corresponding deficiency in Esther’s empire. She would be missing a state, city or home. It was only because ןיוש ןלוכהבוטל, every instant of Sarah’s life was perfection, that Esther’s kingdom was complete. Rabbi Akiva’s students were tired. They assumed that if they would just doze off and miss a little bit of Rabbi Akiva’s Torah in the interim, there wouldn’t be too many ramifications. Rabbi Akiva, however, wanted to teach his Talmidim that every moment counts, and one should use his time wisely. ! תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs Fourth grade boys studied the process of announcing Rosh Chodesh to those people living far from Yerushalayim. They made torches and practiced waving them according to the procedure they are learning in Mishnayos Rosh Hashanah. For their Siyum on Parshas Vayeishev, the 4th grade girls designed Vayeishev-themed board games. They will share the games with some of the younger girls during the week when Vayeishev is the Parshas HaShavua. The girls enjoyed an ice cream-and-toppings celebration. In third grade the girls are learning about different countries in social studies. As part of their unit on Mexico, they celebrated with "Hat Day", and had fun hitting a pinata. The first grade girls just finished a unit about תבש. They will be doing a project as a siyum for the unit. The students are now starting a unit on תיבב המ. They are advancing in their Hebrew reading and writing skills. The girls are looking forward to receiving their Chumashim after completing their review of the Aleph-Beis. PreK students decorated clowns last week for the letter C. This week they played dominoes for D week. Enjoy the many pictures of activities this week.
