October 28, 2022ג״פשת ןושח ’גחנ תשרפ UTILIZE YOUR POTENTIAL5:24 PMDear Parents,When describing Hashem’s instructions to Noach to gather the animals into the Teiva, the possuk states: תויחהל ךילא ואובי לכמ ...'וכו הנימל המהבה ןמ והנימל ףועהו. Take from the birds and the animals inside the Teiva in order that they should live. Further on in the Parsah the order is reversed: םימשה ףועמ םג ...ךל חקת הרוהטה המהבה לכמ. It first lists the animals and then the birds. Why is the order changed? The Mefarshim answer by explaining that generally birds are considered superior to animals because of their ability to fly and are therefore listed first. However, this advantage only exists when they are living naturally and free to fly around. When a bird is confined to an enclosed area this advantage becomes irrelevant. Their unutilized potential to fly makes them inferior. In the beginning of the Parsha when Hashem initially approached Noach to inform him about the impending Mabul, He mentioned the birds first. At that point, the birds were still in their natural habitat and could fly. Thus, their superiority demanded first placement in the possuk. However, at the time of the second possuk, Noach was already at the point of bringing the animals into the Teiva. Once the birds were inside, they could no longer fly, so they now took second place in the possuk. The Gemara in Shabbos Daf 130 compares Klal Yisrael to a Yonah. Just as the dove uses its wings to fly to great heights, so does Klal Yisrael soar with its wings; the Torah. When we utilize the Torah to raise ourselves, we can soar to the highest heights. But if we lower ourselves, we’re even inferior to animals, since we are ignoring the incredible depth of potential for greatness that we are not utilizing. !תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs ● For Rosh Chodesh Cheshvan, the G.O. treated girls in grades 1-7 to an exciting event including games, a water bottle hydro-dipping project, and ice cream with toppings.
