THE MITZVAH OF CHINUCH 5:27 PM October 26, 2018 י‘‘עשת ןושח ז“ט אריו תשרפ  October 28– 5B Hascholas Gemara 10:00 am  November 2 - Grandparents’ Day  November 7– Parent Teacher Conferences (details to follow)  December 1– Torah Academy Gala Auction The possuk in this week’s parsha states: “ תושעל ׳ה ךרד ורמשו וירחא ותיב תאו וינב תא הוצי רשא ןעמל ויתעדי יכטפשמו הקדצ”. Hashem decides to inform Avraham of His intention to destroy Sodom because He loves םהרבא since םהרבא instructs his household to guard Hashem’s ways and act justly and righteously. All the acts of Mesiras Nefesh that Avraham performed did not prompt the ע״שבר to declare His love for Avraham. It was only םהרבא’s dissemination of the word of Hashem to his family that most greatly demonstrated his ׳ה תבהא. םינפ לא םינפ םימכ, love is reciprocal. Why is this? When the Rambam explains how one can fulfil the mitzvah of loving Hashem, he defines bringing others closer to Hashem as an important component of this mitzvah. When a person loves someone, he is eager to tell others about the virtues and qualities of the person he loves. Similarly, if someone truly loves Hashem, he will certainly wish to share His love and draw others to Hashem. Thus, being ךנחמ his family to follow the ׳ה ךרד was the greatest manifestation of םהרבא‘s love for his Creator. The Meshech Chochma points to this possuk as the source for the mitzvah of chinuch. Chinuch, therefore, can be viewed as a mitzvah under the broader category of ׳ה תבהא. If we truly love Hashem, we should express our love by drawing our children closer to Him, and by telling them of His wonders and inspiring them to love Him as well. This is the highest form, and ultimate goal of chinuch. Chinuch should be a beautiful experience of love, of parents taking their children by the hand and bringing them into the illuminated world of Torah. What kind of chinuch accomplishes this? The key is in the phrase ׳ה ךרד ורמשו. By emulating the ways of the ע״שבר, by fulfilling the mitzvah of ויכרדב תכלהו, we are mechanech our children to develop a true love for Hashem. (Based on an essay by Rav Matisyahu Salomon shlita) Have a תבש טוג ! Rabbi Ochs  Staff development meetings took place this past Tuesday for Kodesh, Preschool and General Studies faculties. The featured presenter was Ms. Mia Hyman, a behaviorist from Gateways. Her presentation was geared to our focus for the year, The Classroom Environment.  The children in the PreK classes have started to learn the Aleph– Beis letters right from the start of school. They enjoy learning parsha and focus on middos. A new ABC letter is also introduced each week with activities to reinforce the sound. They were introduced to A at Rosh Hashanah time and, of course, discussed apples. This week they are learning the letter C.  This week first grade girls started working individually on our computer program which is sponsored by The Gruss Foundation.  In grade three the boys are learning Parshas Toldos. They hope to complete learning through Parshas Vayigash. They are already making great progress towards that goal. In general studies, they are learning about the topography, social studies and history of our state, Massachusetts. They have already studied about the North Shore, South Shore, Western Mass. and Cape Cod. They are continuing their studies including the Pilgrims, Thanksgiving and the Revolutionary War.  The girls in grade three are learning Parshas Chayei Sarah.
