EXPLORE IDAHO Tea Kettle Cave Tea Kettle Cave located near Gooding Idaho is a product of the volcanic eruption of McKinney Butte Volcano around 52 000 years ago The roof of the cave likely collapsed around the same time as fresh lava flow cooled and contracted Since then sunlight and moisture have helped sustain plant growth like the ferns which are present today It s important to preserve these ferns which are thousands of years old If you visit the caves please do not touch or step on them The name Tea Kettle is said to be derived from the distinctive teapot like formations found inside the caves which resemble the spout and handle of a teapot When you enter the cave you will enter from the spout into the body of the cave The hole to the entrance is big enough for anyone to fit but you will have to shimmy down into the cave so make sure you re physically able to do so before heading out to explore Keep an eye out for snakes and bring a headlamp or a flashlight There are no signs at the entrance of the cave Follow Google Maps to direct you The coordinates are 42 9935233482179 114 85397005982105 How to Get There Head out on I 84 W looking for signs for ID 46 N to N Rd E 1400 S to Gooding County 45 minutes from Twin Falls Continue on N Rd Take 1300 Rd S Dead Horse Cave Rd to Canal Rd 30 minutes go slow The dirt road leading to the caves is very rocky and bumpy If you do not have a car with high clearance you may have to walk the rest of the way to the cave entrance SumNOmDiEtNDTAeLntal 1 4 Page INSURANCE We now have a savings plan for the whole family call us for details Vertical KIDDIE DAY October 19 11am 3pm Kiddie Day 12 EACH 1 4 Page Experience a kid friendly experience through the swamp Walk through the Haunted Swamp Trick or treating Vertical Cake walk and other games Huge bounce pad Disney princesses and characters Axe throwing FREE face painting Martial arts demo FREE hair painting Entertainment from local groups 208 733 9999 285 Canyon Crest Drive Twin Falls ID www summitdentalsmiles com COME BY FOR A SCARY GOOD TIME 646 S Park Ave W in Twin Falls hauntedswampidaho com 208 280 2883 6 www southernidahokids com

COMMUNITY ARTICLE Helping Children Acquire Language In a Fun and Easy Way I have been lucky to work with kiddos of all ages less than 1 to 99 years old in my career and the most common question I ve been asked is What can I do at home to help my child learn to talk expand their vocabulary Here are some tricks of the trade I ve used every day in my practice to help your kiddo acquire language First things first language is multi faceted Receptive language is how we take language in and expressive language is how we communicate our wants i e words gestures pictures sign language etc Oftentimes as parents we want our little ones to start talking but we forget they need to have words in their lexicon vocabulary to have something to say For example think back to your high school Spanish class How many of us were fluent Spanish speakers after one year Not many But if I asked how many of us were able to understand more than we could communicate I think many of us would raise our hands Why Because we have to take in language first and process it before we can turn around and get our brains to conjugate verbs and move our mouths in a way that gets out the right sound With that being said here are some ideas to help your children acquire language so when they re ready to verbally communicate they ll have the words they need 1 Parallel and Self Talk Have you ever seen a sporting event or watched a nature video in which the narrator explains everything that s going on in the shot play That s your job You are your child s personal narrator Narrate everything If your child is talking in 1 word phrases try narrating in 1 2 word phrases to ensure understanding and provide them with their next steps Be sure to narrate everything you do as well 2 Model When your child comes to you and says me want apple no correction is necessary We can just praise them for their efforts and model the correct phrase i e mmm yummy I want an apple too 3 Expansion and Elaboration This is exactly what it sounds like Expand and elaborate on what your child says If your child comments train you might chime in with Big train Go train go The most important thing in language acquisition is for you to enjoy your time with your children Don t worry Have fun and talk with them If you have questions or concerns don t hesitate to reach out to your pediatrician or speech therapist Caroline Riley M S CCC SLP Makona Therapy 11 O c t o b e r 2 0 2 4
SCIENCE SPOT Falling for STEM During the fall months the science of change is everywhere There is something wonderful about crunchy leaves and pumpkin patches and Halloween parties at school In fact school parties are a great way to explore STEM in the classroom In my experience teachers appreciate parents who can provide support for holiday celebrations One year in my daughter s 5th grade class I volunteered to bring the activity The plan was approved by the teacher and principal but I forgot to tell the other moms that I was providing a science experiment instead of a game Much to their surprise I brought cow eyeballs for the kids to dissect Fun was had by all on that October afternoon even if the other moms needed a bit of convincing Leading up to Halloween the leaves begin to change colors and fall to the ground This provides another opportunity for sensory play Kids can find different shapes to trace make rubbings for art projects and identify the colors that make an appearance after the green pigment breaks down in most deciduous trees Older children can learn about chromatography which is a fancy name for writing or drawing with color Separating the pigments in leaves markers too help us all to understand the principles of pigment and gives kids a behind the scenes peek at how the leaves change colors each fall Pumpkins provide sensory opportunities in food science as well as STEM crafts Growing the pumpkins from seeds can be the first lesson of the season as kids watch the vines spread and small pumpkins grow to Jack OLantern sizes Once the pumpkins are ready for carving you can introduce your kids to the parts of the gourd including the fibrous pulp commonly known as the guts You can help kids count seeds before roasting them for a tasty snack Kids can learn about colors and textures as they explore local pumpkin patches and backyard gardens Older kids can measure circumference and weight as they look for the largest pumpkin in the field Thanks to Pinterest and other sources of inspiration decorating pumpkins has become an exercise in creative crafting LED lights and glow in the dark paint make for spooky glows As the days shorten and the weather cools I encourage you to spend time outside as often as possible As the famous saying goes You should sit in nature for 20 minutes a day unless you re busy Then you should sit for an hour Unknown author Amy Christopherson Director CSI Mini Cassia Center and Idaho Science Mom 12 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

sponsored by HEALTH WELLNESS HEALTHYHABITS Helping Children Cope with New Experiences New experiences such as starting a new school year joining a new sports team and going to a wellness exam can be stressful for children Parents and caregivers can empower children to handle these situations and help them cope in positive ways The goal is not to remove situations that cause stress but to help your child manage them in healthy ways Managing New Situations Reassure Your Child Let your child know that they are going to be okay When your child faces their fears they become less anxious and more confident to approach the situation again Tell them that it s normal to feel a little scared but that you believe in them and their ability to handle it This reassurance goes a long way in boosting their confidence Respect Their Feelings It s important to respect how your child feels For example if they are afraid to get a shot at a wellness visit with their doctor tell them it s okay to feel scared and that you will be there with them to get through the experience Acknowledge their feelings without dismissing them which helps your child feel heard and understood Ask Open Ended Questions Ask questions like How are you feeling about joining the basketball team When your child is anxious encourage them to embrace the situation Share that the fear will lessen over time and discuss the possible outcomes of the new situation This will allow them to problem solve and reduce uncertainty Open ended questions also help children express their thoughts and feelings more freely Limit Worry Time Avoid giving your child too much time to think about a new event such as going to the doctor or attending a new friend s birthday party Less time to worry means less time for fears to build up and allows children to approach new situations with a fresh perspective Providing your child the extra support with these strategies will help your child build confidence and handle new experiences Hallie Chancellor MS CCLS St Luke s Certified Child Life Specialist Childrens Sponsored by 21 O c t o b e r 2 0 2 4

HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by sponsored by SPOTLIGHT Ingrown Toenails Physicians Immediate Care Center would like to welcome everyone back to school We are happy for the cool weather that fall starts to bring to our great valley This time of year children start to become more active at PE recess or after school activities These activities are awesome to increase aerobic exercise for kids that is not only healthy for their bodies but also their minds This activity can also cause increased stress on their feet particularly their toes One problem that can develop is ingrown toenails can hinder their activity and can cause infection Ingrown toenail in kids are quite common They occur when a corner of a toenail usually on the great toe buries into the nail cuticle instead of growing over it A cause of this can be tight or narrow toed shoes Also some children have naturally curving toenails Toenails peeled off at the edges and clipped at the sides are at risk for ingrowing Toe injuries can also result in ingrown toenails Excessive sweating and nail infections mainly fungal are other causes of ingrown toenails Some children are born with ingrowing toenails congenital onychocryptosis and sometimes they can run in the the family To identify this problem you may notice your child limping or walking differently because of pain When you look at the child s feet you ll see swelling and redness around the corner of a toenail The area is painful to touch and your child may try to avoid footwear The ingrown toenail can cause an infection with yellow fluid or pus draining from it Ingrown toenails in kids are easy to recognize by looking at the toes but if the condition goes on too long or happens again and again you should see your doctor Children often avoid complaining about ingrown toenails even when they re in pain When you see the problem try to reduce the swelling by soaking the foot in warm or room temperature water Gently massage the side of the nail fold to try and free the nail edge The pain will stop if you can find the toenail corner and help it out of the inflamed tissue Use your fingernail rather than any instrument This will allow the toe to heal on its own Most ingrown toenails in kids can be treated at home Only rarely will you need to visit a doctor for nail removal or other surgery If the toe around the ingrown toenail is infected and has pus oozing from it apply an antibiotic ointment Antibiotic ointments are available over the counter without a prescription You can also give your child acetaminophen Tylenol or ibuprofen Advil or Motrin to relieve the pain If you ve been able to lift the buried toenail corner out healing is rapid Pus discharge should stop in 48 hours your child should be pain free in a week and the toe should be completely healed in 2 weeks You should see your doctor if Your child has severe pain and you can t lift the toenail corner out There is spreading redness and swelling up the toe and foot You can see areas of pus under the skin Your child has a fever and is getting worse The ingrown toenail is not relieved in 7 days Ingrown toenails don t heal until the edge of the toenail is freed or removed Once this is done healing is rapid Antibiotics taken by mouth don t help on their own On the other hand once the toenail is freed or removed the infection is often cured without oral antibiotics Jonathan Pittard PAC 208 736 7422 OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls 26 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
