BAR-O-METER | OCT 20233From the PresidentScott HillI know I’m not alone in believing that Judges’ Day 2023 was a huge success! Thank you to all that either participatedor worked behind the scenes to make it all possible. As your President, while I would love to participate in each andevery event, I instead have the privilege of circumnavigating the greater Wichita metropolitan area and stopping into all of the Judges’ Day events to say “hello” and “thank you.” I thought I might share a bit about my day’sexperience with you all. My morning began with a sendoff of the bike ride. Over a dozen riders participated in varying distances between 20and 40 miles, beginning and ending at the Timbuktu Bar & Grill in Andover, Kansas. Special thanks to January Baileyand David Prelle Eron of Prelle Eron & Bailey, P.A. for sponsoring and leading the ride. I then traveled west to Rolling Hills golf course where we had over 50 attorney and judge participants. While golfwas already underway, I was able to head out on course with Executive Director Virdena Gilkey to greet lawyers andjudges and witnesses a few solid putts and drives. From Rolling Hills, I went to the nearby Side Pockets Restaurant and Sports Bar. More than a dozen competed inhead-to-head pool competition, while enjoying lunch and beverages. Special thanks go out to Fred Johnson forleading the charge. After a quick loss to Judge William Wooley in 8-ball (my only actual Judges’ Day participation), I traveled to Sim GolfCourse to say hello to the nearly dozen foursomes participating at that course. It was a pleasure seeing many oldfriends at the clubhouse, as players hit the turn. Tennis and Pickleball were next at the Ralph Wulz Riverside Tennis Center where I was able to greet many of theparticipants and pause for a quick photo before the players took to the court. Thanks goes out to Rick Thompsonfor his leadership in all things racket. After leaving the tennis center, I traveled nearly to Augusta to the clay shooing event at Michael Murphy & Sons. I’venever been much of a shooter myself, but the setup and comradery among lawyer and judge participants may makeme change my mind for next year. A special Thanks to Shannon Kelly for her year-after-year leadership of thisevent.Back to the west side with Trivia at Quincy’s Bar & Grill at 21st and West Street. Thank you for the warm welcomefrom everyone participating. And special thanks to Michelle Meier of the Kansas Commission on Peace Officers’Standards and Training who spearheaded this event. Last but not least, I headed over to the Judges’ Day Barbeque and the “Bar Wars: Return of the Bar Show” at CrownUptown. The crowd was amazing. Nearly 400 attendees came from far and wide to watch the first Bar Show since2016. And those in the audience were not disappointed! The show itself was phenomenal. The talent among ourWBA members is truly unmatched. I will not attempt to recognize all those who put countless hours into makingthis a success. But I will say a special thank you to Christy Campbell, who advocated for a return of the bar showand helped organize and lead. I have had the pleasure of working with Christy since the birth of the Bar Show –Judges’ Day marriage concept was introduced just over a year ago. Christy, you did it!Finally, I’d like to take this privilege to recognize someone who I didn’t see at this Judges’ Day. I can hardly think of aWBA event, let alone a Judges’ Day, that I have attended in the last 20 years where Linda Gregory wasn’t there. Taking pictures. Supporting our Association. Supporting the community. Or simply being our friend. My purposehere is not to eulogize, but to simply say a belated thank you to both Mel and Linda Gregory, and to share that Lindawill be missed. Thank you for continuing with us at Judges’ Day this year, Mel. See everyone again next year!

After Judge Brown passedaway in 2012, Mike clerked for Judge Monti Belot, then Judge TomMarten, and then Judge John Broomes. Fun fact – Judge Broomesclerked for Judge Belot, and Judge Belot had clerked for JudgeBrown. And Mike was there to give advice and counsel to all ofthem.Brian Wood started clerking for Judge Pat Kelly in February 1989.When Judge Kelly retired, Brian then worked for Judge Kelly’ssuccessor, Judge Tom Marten, and stayed in that chambers untilJudge Marten retired. Judge Eric Melgren – upon becoming ChiefJudge Eric Melgren – was able to add Brian to his staff for a term. We have a newly refurbished park in Wichita, named for a prominent Wichita attorney. On September 16,2023, the City’s Park & Recreation Department unveiled the Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square Park.Originally created in 2002, the City completely revamped the design as part of its larger redevelopmentproject at Broadway and Williams. Three WBA Representatives were in attendance for the festivities.Chester I. Lewis, Jr. was a Kansas civil rights activist. Born in Hutchinson in 1928, Chester Lewis Sr. was thehead of a Black newspaper, The Hutchinson Blade. His father encouraged him to become a lawyer so thatLewis Jr. could fight in the courts what Lewis Sr. had fought in the press. And so, Lewis attended theUniversity of Kansas, where he would graduate with a law degree in 1953 near the top of his class. Lewis then moved south to Wichita and immediately began to shake up the local establishment. His firstpiece of litigation began with the birth of his first child in July 1953. Lewis’s wife, Jacqueline, had lighter skin. After the birth, a nurse asked Jacqueline her race. Upon learning that she was Black, the nurse requiredJacqueline to move to another room because Wesley Hospital only gave private rooms to white women. Thenurses then moved Lewis’s newborn son to a segregated area of the nursery ward. Wichita Unveils Chester I. Lewis Reflection Square ParkBy: Diana StanleyBAR-O-METER | OCT 202313Lewis confronted the hospital staff and threatened to sue them under an obscure 1874 Kansas statuteprohibiting discrimination in public accommodations. The hospital quickly changed its policy. Two monthslater, Lewis initiated his next civil rights lawsuit using the same 1874 law—this time successfullydesegregating the city’s public swimming pool. Lewis was only 25. I asked Chester’s long-time friend—and sometimes opposing counsel—Jack Focht about what Lewis was likeand what he wanted Wichita attorneys to know about him: He was a terror in the courtroom. A terror who wasn’t afraid of anything. He was also erudite. We’d talk forhours in my office in the prosecutor’s office, about life, and arguing about this case and that. But his braverywent beyond the courtroom. I remember when Lewis and his wife bought a house in an all-whiteneighborhood. It caused quite a stir. It was a situation where something was wrong and someone needed todo something about it. Lewis was always the man who would do something. The new park design features artwork by artists, Ellamonique Baccus and Matthew Mazzotta, depicting hismany achievements. One panel features a train car, commemorating his class action victory for Black trainporters. Another features his important role in the Wichita Dockum lunch counter sit-protest as a mentorand legal advisor to the students. It’s a beautiful space and I encourage everyone to take a few minutes tovisit it on their next trip downtown.

Richard Jay (Rick) Sanborn passed away comfortably and peacefully at his home in thecountry on August 15, 2023, with his sister Wendy at his side. He was 69 years old. Hisparents, who always called him “Ricky” allegedly named Richard after HumphreyBogart’s character in Casablanca. Richard was born on February 27, 1954, to theHonorable Keith and Wanda Sanborn in Wichita, Kansas. He graduated from EastHigh School, then obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree at Wichita State University in1977 before attending Washburn Law School. He obtained his Juris Doctorate in1981, following in the law like his father. Richard was dedicated to the law. He worked in private practice in Wichita, startingthe law firms of Cranmer & Sanborn, then Sanborn, Sadowsky & Mills, then workingwith his father, Keith at Sanborn & Sanborn. Richard also sat as a Municipal CourtJudge for 13 years in Mulvane and Wichita. Richard Jay SanbornFebruary 27, 1954 - August 15, 2023While practicing law and providing services as a Judge, he also held the title of Consultant Sedgwick County DistrictAttorney, Legal Counsel to the Sedgwick County Clerk and provided counsel to the Great Bend, Kansas PoliceDepartment. Richard was an active member in the American, Kansas, and Wichita Bar Associations and sat onseveral committees. He was on the Board of Governors for the Kansas Trial Lawyers Association and was a memberof the American Association of Trial Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, the KansasAssociation of City Attorneys, the Wichita Labor Federation, and was a Phi Alpha Delta and Lambda Alpha. Simply put, Richard loved the law and strived to make a difference throughout his law career. He helped many whowould not otherwise have had legal representation, often with just a promise to “make it right with him.” Richard was married prior, but later found the love of his life, Carole, whom he called Carley Sue, in 2010. Theyshared their love of the outdoors, bonfires, farm living, fishing, Minnesota, antique hunting, music and adventure. Richard, like his love of the law, truly loved music and was a talented musician. He loved to sing and pick his guitar, often with a small group of other talented musicians. He looked forward to the Winfield Bluegrass Festival each yearand would share a new or old song with others while attending. Richard saw Elvis in the 1970’s in Las Vegas and metBB King and Waylon Jennings at the Hilton Lounge there, too. He lived life to the fullest, even obtaining the firearmthat had shot him in his twenties. The bullet was meant for someone else, but in dealing with the District Attorney toobtain an attempted murder conviction for the intended victim, Richard made a deal to get the weapon after thetrial. He succeeded. Richard was predeceased in death by wife Carole and his parents. He is survived by sister Wendy Sanborn Dougan(John) and nephew Art Dougan (Samantha), Deb Sanborn and KJ Sanborn. Richard is also survived by Carole’sdaughter, Cara Hull Beck (Tyler) of Salina and Carole’s two sons Jason and Pierce. He leaves behind a myriad ofbeloved friends and his cat Sam and dog Tommie Sue – thank you to Adrian and Josh for adopting them. In lieu of flowers please donate generously to your favorite Animal Rescue Group, Legal Defense Fund, CancerResearch, or consider becoming an organ donor.Richard, a gentle soul, left us with the precept “Speak not harshly…” May our lives be more gentle in knowing andremembering him. Speak not harshly, was the preceptWhich to man the Savior taught—May that precept ever guide us—Gentle words will cost us naught.BAR-O-METER | OCT 202314
