COMMUNITY ARTICLE Where We Can All Play When you think back on your school days one of the vivid memories probably takes place on the playground Unguided play with peers is a critical part of childhood development and for many is most accessible on a school playground It s where we make our first friends where we learn to play together with others and where we develop skills to overcome adversity But what happens when a child can t get to the playground or can t utilize the same equipment as their peers Currently there are very few accessible adaptive and inclusive playgrounds that facilitate engagement for children of all abilities Across the country many communities are exploring ways to address this concern by updating the schoolyard to include adaptive playgrounds What is an adaptive playground First and foremost an adaptive playground is just that a playground It might include a climbing apparatus slides ramps and interactive moving parts What is different is the way these playgrounds ensure that children and caregivers of all abilities can take part in play There will be play equipment that suits a variety of abilities and the surfaces leading up to the playground and play equipment will be accessible for all It s a place where children and caregivers can take part in the learning and development that comes along with unguided play In Twin Falls the community is coming together to create spaces that are adaptive so all children have the opportunity to play together The effort started with a simple question from a kindergartener who asked why the playground didn t have equipment all their friends could get to and play on This school year the Twin Falls School District in partnership with the Twin Falls Education Foundation the J A Kathryn Albertson Family Foundation and a motivated group of Sawtooth Elementary School parents and community members are answering Destress Relax Float Magic Your Rest Recovery Sanctuary 1 4 Page Vertical MV Cancer 1 4 Page Vertical 152 2nd Ave S Twin Falls 208 933 2620 www FloatMagic com 4 www southernidahokids com

COMMUNITY ARTICLE that question by unveiling the first adaptive school playground in the school district The play structure located at Sawtooth Elementary School is designed to provide families from across the Magic Valley with access to a playground that is universally tailored to encourage play for both children and caregivers regardless of their abilities While the Sawtooth students and parents brought the idea of an adaptive playground to the forefront they also worked with administrators to complete a needs assessment of all district playgrounds Sawtooth was found to be one of two playgrounds with the highest needs for this type of playground remodel Sawtooth Elementary School houses one of the district s elementary level extended resource classrooms while also having a playground that has limited accessibility for students with varying abilities Additionally the TFSD identified Harrison Elementary School as a school that is a high priority for this type of project Thanks to the growing support of the community and the group of fundraisers the new Sawtooth playground is near completion and community organizers are ready to kick off the process for a similar project at Harrison Together our community can continue this momentum to create play spaces accessible to all Eva Craner TFSD Public Relations Director Acton 1 4 Page Vertical PATIO COVERS DROP SHADES PERGOLAS AWNINGS Superior 1 4 Page Vertical MENTION THIS AD FOR 5 OFF 208 420 5548 SuperiorPatioCovers com October 2023 5

COMMUNITY ARTICLE FLUD Making Mental Health Accessible FLUD is committed to bringing communities together to work toward ending the mental health crisis Those who cannot afford mental health therapy on their own can be provided with financial assistance receive a better understanding of available resources and be lifted loved and lightened by their local community In 2022 local women Jess Anderson and Emma Cherry were each working on a pretty game changing idea for mental health making therapy more accessible to anyone who wanted help Unbeknownst to each other they were both trying to tackle the major roadblock of affordability They knew one of the most common reasons people don t seek the help they need is because of money Good professional help is expensive As a licensed clinical social worker Emma sees first hand how many people are turned away for change of insurance lack of coverage for mental health or simply their preferred provider is not able to take a specific type of insurance She knew the community needed something more than awareness they needed accessibility Meanwhile Jess had spent the better parts of 2021 and 2022 in therapy herself and even though she had a great health insurance plan they did not recognize mental health as legitimate claim Although it was a difficult decision financially attending therapy has been the best investment she has ever made Jess decided money should not stand in the way of those who struggle with their mental health Those who are suffering don t need someone to point them in the direction of help they need someone to take them there Toward the end of 2022 Jess Emma joined forces and the Foundation for Lighting Up the Dark was born Those who struggle with their mental health can often feel like the world is a dark and overwhelming place We want to spread light and love and flood the community with enough funding to eliminate the financial roadblock on your journey to your best life In early 2023 Kate Motes joined the FLUD board FLUD would love the community to be deeply involved in this movement for great floods have flown from simple sources Shakespeare Your contribution may seem like just a drop in the bucket but a million little drops make a pretty powerful FLUD Communities 4 Youth 1 4 Page Vertical We re here High Quality Personalized Aeris Care By An 1 4 Page Experienced Pediatric Team Vertical You Can Trust Jared Hansen MD FAAP Jimmy Roberts PA C Call today to schedule 208 391 5952 706 N College Rd Twin Falls ID 83301 6 www southernidahokids com

HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by sponsored by SPOTLIGHT Ingrown Toenails Physicians Immediate Care Center would like to welcome everyone back to school We are happy for the cool weather that fall starts to bring to our great valley This time of year children are more active at PE recess or after school activities These activities are awesome for increasing aerobic exercise for kids which is not only healthy for their bodies but also for their minds This activity can also cause increased stress on their feet particularly their toes One problem that can develop is ingrown toenails that can hinder their activity and can cause infection Ingrown toenails in kids are quite common They occur when a corner of a toenail usually on the great toe buries into the nail cuticle instead of growing over it A cause of this can be tight or narrow toed shoes Also some children have naturally curving toenails Toenails peeled off at the edges and clipped at the sides are at risk for ingrowing Toe injuries can also result in ingrown toenails Excessive sweating and nail infections mainly fungal are other causes of ingrown toenails Some children are born with ingrowing toenails congenital onychocryptosis and sometimes they can run in the the family To identify this problem you may notice your child limping or walking differently because of pain When you look at the child s feet you ll see swelling and redness around the corner of a toenail The area is painful to touch and your child may try to avoid footwear The ingrown toenail can cause an infection with yellow fluid or pus draining from it Ingrown toenails in kids are easy to recognize by looking at the toes but if the condition goes on too long or happens again and again you should see your doctor Children often avoid complaining about ingrown toenails even when they re in pain When you see the problem try to reduce the swelling by soaking the foot in warm or room temperature water Gently massage the side of the nail fold to try and free the nail edge The pain will stop if you can find the toenail corner and help it out of the inflamed tissue Use your fingernail rather than any instrument This will allow the toe to heal on its own Most ingrown toenails in kids can be treated at home Only rarely will you need to visit a doctor for nail removal or other surgery If the toe around the ingrown toenail is infected and has pus oozing from it apply an antibiotic ointment Antibiotic ointments are available over the counter without a prescription You can also give your child acetaminophen Tylenol or ibuprofen Advil or Motrin to relieve the pain If you ve been able to lift the buried toenail corner out healing is rapid Pus discharge should stop in 48 hours Your child should be pain free in a week and the toe should be completely healed in 2 weeks You should see your doctor if Your child has severe pain and you can t lift the toenail corner out There is spreading redness and swelling up the toe and foot You can see areas of pus under the skin Your child has a fever and is getting worse The ingrown toenail is not relieved in 7 days Ingrown toenails don t heal until the edge of the toenail is freed or removed Once this is done healing is rapid Antibiotics taken by mouth don t help on their own On the other hand once the toenail is freed or removed the infection is often cured without oral antibiotics Jonathan Pittard PAC 208 736 7422 OPEN 8AM TO 7PM SEVEN DAYS A WEEK www picctf com We ve moved across from Walmart in Twin Falls 10 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by HEALTHYHABITS Good Sleep is a Reachable Dream It s time for bed little mouse little mouse darkness is falling all over the house This is the beginning of a bedtime book my children loved by Mem Fox As a pediatrician questions about sleeping concerns are some of the most common Your body needs sleep to rest your brain and heal itself A good bedtime routine is an essential part of helping your child relax and get a good night s sleep For infants a routine of waking activities and sleeping is important Put your infant on their back in a crib when they are sleepy but not asleep Keep them active during the day and at night keep the house quiet For toddlers a bedtime routine of healthy snacks bathing teeth brushing and reading or singing is a good start Make sure their room is safe as this is the age that night wandering starts Plan for about an hour to gradually transition a busy 3 year old from their full activity to sleep stage For school age children a quick straightening up of the bedroom is helpful This gets things organized for morning and decreases chances of tripping on something should they wake This can be followed by a healthy snack washing up brushing teeth and then about 20 30 minutes of reading talking about plans for the next day or listening to music For middle school and teens bedtime routines are often a bit more flexible due to evening activities and sports Sleeping in a bit on weekends is nice but don t let them sleep too long as it could shift their sleep schedule Turning off all devices is essential If your child is having troubles falling asleep or wakes at night and cannot get back to sleep talk with them to troubleshoot some of the most common problems 1 Is the bedroom quiet dark uncluttered and comfortable 2 Does the child feel safe in the room 3 Are electronics turned off 4 Are they worrying about something or someone 5 Are they hungry or dirty While it is normal to occasionally have difficulty sleeping if this is occurring frequently please talk with your pediatrician for more advice Dr Kathryn Reese MD St Luke s Pediatrics SLEEP NEEDS BY AGE including nap times 4 12 months 12 16 hours 1 2 years 11 14 hours 3 5 years 10 13 hours 6 12 years 9 12 hours 13 18 years 8 10 hours Sponsored by 14 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

SMART MONEY sponsored by Protect Your Child s Identity Parents someone might be pretending to be your child right now No they aren t going to your child s school or strapping on a bike helmet and telling people they are your child but they may be using your child s identity to open credit cards and take out loans When opening a credit card most creditors don t seek verification of the applicant s age meaning a criminal with your child s name and social security number could open a line of credit like they are an adult Plus this can go undetected for a long time because your child isn t using their credit till they become an adult Protect your child s identity so when they do become an adult and start using their credit they aren t in for a huge headache Be Careful Giving Out Your Child s Social Security Number Your child s social security number is a main way to prove who they are but be very careful giving it out Never put it online make sure it s not in emails or texts and properly destroy anything with the number on it A criminal with your child s name birthdate and SSN can open a credit card in their name That s all it really takes and figuring out a child s name and birthdate isn t very hard so their SSN is the one to keep protected at all costs Put a Freeze on Their Credit Your child isn t using their credit score so they don t even need to have it accessible Reach out to the major credit bureaus Experian TransUnion and Equifax and place a protected consumer security freeze on their credit reports That way when a criminal applies for a credit card using your child s name and the creditor goes to do a credit check with the credit bureaus they are told the credit is frozen and not to give out a line of credit in their name Protect and Monitor Their Credit It s a good habit for you and eventually your child when they become an adult to actively protect and monitor their credit This involves making sure their credit reports are accurate and have something ready in case their identity gets stolen You can get free annual credit reports from the credit bureaus through annualcreditreport com This is how you can make sure nobody is opening credit cards or loans in your child s name and if your child is 16 or older you can teach them how to request the credit reports themselves If the worst happens and your child s identity has been stolen it s good to have a plan There are many protection and repair services out there including one at Pioneer Federal Credit Union Our Identity Theft Protection service for our members covers the whole family and will assist you with fixing and protecting yourself from identity theft including any money coming in to buy something big and fun Federally Insured by NCUA Membership required Let our kids help in Pioneer Credit Building a healthy nancial future SUPER SAVERS Sponsor Page Horizontal Federally Insured by NCUA 18 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
