BulletinJuly 2020• 5DDeeaarr RReeaaddeerrssTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …KKeeeepp RReeaaddiinngg!!CCaarroolleePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5October 2023• 5BulletinKeep Reading!Carole We have a packed Bulletin for you this month. Shall we start with the 2023 Graduation Ceremony? Firstly, let me extend congratulations to all the successful students – not just from this year but also attending, those who graduated in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022. See pages 9 – 17 for a round up of the events of the day, held at the Mary Lyon Advanced Training Centre.Following the article about the ceremony, is another discussing the levels of education that CLAST (College of Laboratory Animal Science & Technology) provides and how you can access them – see pages 21 – 24. Once again, if you are interested but your employer needs help with funding your course – then AS-ET may be able to help with bursaries and information about that can be found on pages 24 – 25.I have talked about this many times before but if you do have the chance, I highly recommend that you take any educational opportunities that come your way. Interestingly, we have another article, written by Valerie Hill, the American recipient of the AAALAC International Fellowship Award, describing her time in the UK and how she won the award and the quali cations she needed to be nominated.Valerie’s report is on pages 27 – 34 and is a fascinating read, especially because she describes some of the questions she wanted to ask the people she met in the UK about the differences between facility management compared to in the USA.The North East Branch have also been involved in educational activities – they ran their highly successful practical skills workshop. There were many different workshops on the day – ranging from suturing through to genetic calculations and aseptic technique and a host of other topics. You can read about the day on pages 37 – 42, it is very informative and it made me wonder if some of these workshops could be adapted to run at Congress? I think they would be well received.Having said that, if anyone wants to run a workshop, present a paper or poster then the details for that are on pages 35 and 36.

BulletinOctober 2023 • 13 Overview of the IAT HE ProgrammeThe IAT acts as the professional body for persons engaged in laboratory animal science, supporting the interests of Animal Technologists in the UK and abroad. As a recognised Ofqual Awarding Organisation the IAT develops, manages and quality assures qualifications that are widely recognised within academia and the biotechnology industry in the UK and abroad. The IAT Higher Education (HE) programme aims to provide an internationally recognised education programme that ensures Animal Technologists and other laboratory science professionals are equipped to meet their legal and ethical responsibilities in providing high standards of care and welfare for laboratory animals. It also provides the knowledge and skills for the future advancement of animal welfare, good science and to ensure Animal Technologists are suitable for personal and career advancement. How can you benefit from our courses? There are lots of benefits to be gained from studying with us at any level but the further you progress through our qualifications, the more you stand to gain. Each of our units has been designed to develop your skill profile and will give you the chance to:– Learn about complex biological processes related to animals in research.– Develop and refine your critical thinking and writing abilities.– Maintain and improve animal welfare within your facility.– Develop your soft skills in management, negotiation and communication skills.– Perform experimental procedures safely and humanely.– Increase your job satisfaction and chance of career progression.– Provide you with valuable professional networking opportunities.– Learn to deliver confident and informative presentations and reports.– Graduate with an IAT HE Certificate, that can be used towards a full HE qualification in the future. How can your employer benefit from your studies? As an employer, you want to know that you are making a worthy investment in your employees’ education and training. We strive to train laboratory professionals to the highest standards and work closely with many large employers of laboratory staff including the Universities of Edinburgh, Oxford, Cambridge, King’s College London, AstraZeneca and Cape Town.

Page 14

Bulletin14 • October 2023 The benefits of higher education and training in animal science and technology are not just for your employees, your organisation stands to gain just as much including:– Increased staff loyalty and sense of being valued by the employer.– Greater staff retention, especially whilst they are studying.– Be safe in the knowledge that your staff are experts in animal welfare, helping to maintain a Culture of Care.– Students will develop interpersonal skills to facilitate working effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders in a team environment.– Students learn cutting edge approaches from industry experts, equipping staff with a range of practical skills to bring to the workplace.– Our wide range of modules meet CPD needs and can be incorporated into staff appraisals.– Staff members will be confident public speakers with improved communication and presentation skills.– Efficient employees who can prioritise and manage their time effectively.– Employees with developed scientific writing skills for use in the company.Animal Technology requires integration into a broad range of disciplines. Senior Animal Technologists are expected to communicate effectively with a range of key personnel including scientists, veterinarians, Named Persons under the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act, building engineers and other technical professions (for example histology and pathology). They require a broad knowledge of many disciplines and the ability to understand the key points of scientific practice, building design and management, good animal management and welfare, disease recognition and control and a thorough understanding of the key legislation controlling the use of animals for research. The HE programme provides a wide range of skills, knowledge and behaviours which help the students integrate effectively with their professional colleagues. As science and animal welfare are rapidly evolving areas there is a responsibility on all Animal Technologists to continually update their skills and knowledge base, something all of these HE students have demonstrated very effectively over the course of their studies.Studying at any level is hard but when you have to balance your studies with a full-time job and commitments to family and friends it can become very difficult. Although the HE units are now delivered through a mix of formal

Page 15

BulletinOctober 2023 • 15 taught sessions, tutorials, group work and practical activities, most of the work is done by the students independently, in their own time. This requires high levels of commitment and effort by the student and support from their employers for successful outcomes. It also requires the students to develop excellent time management and prioritisation skills to juggle their professional and personal commitments successfully. Objectives of assessment processThe HE qualifications are designed to:– Recognise learning and prepare the learner for further learning and training and to develop knowledge and skills in Animal Technology.– Prepare learners for further learning and training by establishing a broad and relevant base of knowledge and skills in Animal Technology.– Develop knowledge and skills in laboratory animal science and technology specialist areas which enhance the learners’ ability to take independence and autonomy in their work role.– Encourage updating of skills and knowledge and continuing professional development (CPD).– Relate knowledge and skills to legal, technical, process or good practice requirements in the field of laboratory animal science and technology.– Develop knowledge and skills in order to gain recognition at a higher level or in a different role.– Develop knowledge and skills relevant to a particular specialisation within an occupation or set of occupations. The broad objectives of the assessment process are to:– Provide a sound theoretical knowledge and/or the practical abilities of the principles that underpin the practice of laboratory animal science and technology and to improve the welfare of animals and the quality of the animal work necessary to fulfil the increasingly demanding role of the Animal Technologist under the legislation protecting animals used for experimental or other scientific purposes.– Assist learners effectively to demonstrate competence in the execution of practical skills.– Foster a spirit of independent learning, enquiry and continuing professional development.– Externally assess the learning that has taken place and its application to the practice of laboratory animal science and technology.

BulletinOctober 2023 • 23IAT Fellowship – for Level 6 graduatesLearners that have completed a level 6 Diploma are eligible for IAT Fellowship. Become a Fellow to receive exclusive benefi ts and be eligible for election to IAT council.Register for a diplomaBefore enrolling in courses for your chosen diploma, please make sure you have registered onto your chosen level fi rst. Registering is made very simple by our registration form. Register for a diploma – https://clast.org.uk/register/About our DiplomasWe offer level 4 – 6 IAT Diplomas in Laboratory Animal Science and Technology (LAS&T). Our Diploma courses follow on from IAT levels 1-3. We have split our qualifi cation into three Diplomas (level 4-6) to allow learners the freedom to progress to the level that suits them best. You will receive an IAT Diploma certifi cate upon completion of each year, culminating in gaining a full IAT HE Diploma (https://clast.org.uk/diplomas/) in LAS&T on completion of your third year. There is no obligation to complete all 3 years and you can take a break between levels, returning to study when the time is right for you. What will I learn? Each level comprises 4 different learning units. Each unit will focus on a subject relating to animal research and/or the roles and responsibilities within an animal research facility. Each subject will help you develop key skills that will improve your performance in the workplace, provide you with a detailed understanding of the topic at hand and teach you how to apply those principles to improve animal welfare. How long will I be studying? In part, how long you study for is up to you. Each Diploma is taught over 1 year, the 4 units will be taught in separate teaching blocks that typically run over 4 consecutive days. This way you do not have to make a weekly commitment to attending a teaching session and instead, can take a short break from work to complete the teaching block in just a few days. Units are usually spaced out over the year and because our Diplomas are split into individual levels, you will not be committed to 3 consecutive years of study and will achieve a Diploma certifi cate for each year completed.Even though the taught classes are part-time, our expert tutors will always be available to support you in your studies through email, video calls or telephone.

Bulletin24 • October 2023 How will a Diploma benefit me?Studying LAS&T Diplomas will equip you with the knowledge needed to excel in the world of laboratory animal care and welfare. Our Diplomas are perfect for those working in animal research who want to take their career to the next step, especially if you aspire to achieve a supervisory or management position within a research facility. Our Diplomas cover topics ranging from animal biology and experimental design, to the design and management of an animal facility. Complete all three levels in LAS&T to gain a full IAT HE Diploma (https://clast.org.uk/diplomas/) and become eligible for IAT Fellowship (https://clast.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/iat-fellowship.jpg).Unable to access higher education because of financial reasons? The HE programme would have struggled to continue without attracting sufficient funding and student numbers. AS-ET has played a big part in supporting those who want to study but needed some financial support.AS-ET is a charity, registered under the UK Charity law with the objective to advance education and promote excellence in the care and welfare of animals used in science. The Trust achieves its objective by providing bursaries for education and training courses, supporting the development of new courses, promoting the production of the teaching package. We also provide prizes to encourage people to undertake further education and training. Three AS-ET prizes were presented at the graduation ceremony. The AS-ET Trustees would like to congratulate the graduates who have successfully undertaken a demanding course, extended their knowledge and made them better able to promote excellence in the care and welfare of animals used in science. We hope many other technologists will follow their example. If any potential student has difficulty in raising the registration fee AS-ET will be happy to consider an application for a bursary. For further details visit www.as-et.org.ukAS-ET is a charity to advance education and promote excellence in the careand welfare of animals used in science. The selected Fellow is provided with an all-expenses paid trip to the other country (US to the UK and vice versa) to experience visits to prestigious biomedical research facilities and attend a national conference. How many times do you hear about opportunities that you think are beyond your reach and not even worth pursuing? This is what I thought each year when the AAALAC Fellowship Award announcement was presented to the laboratory animal science community. I am betting many of you can relate to the following internal monologues:“I’m not the kind of candidate they are seeking.”“They probably want to select a veterinarian.”“Travelling to another country is too intimidating.”“There are too many other applicants.” “I do not want to put myself out there.” At the University of Michigan Unit for Laboratory Animal Medicine (ULAM) we have an internal committee charged with collecting and discussing any and all award opportunities that may be relevant to the members of our diverse animal care team. After a committee meeting where qualifi cations and potential candidates for the AAALAC Fellowship Award were discussed, I was approached by one of the members who asked if I would be interested in receiving a nomination. Admittedly, I needed to spend some time thinking about it. I readthrough the requirements, consulted with several trusted colleagues and discussed the opportunity with my family. Of all the times throughout my 25+ year career, I knew that now was the time to be brave; a sentiment echoed by those around me.

Page 28

Bulletin28 • October 2023 The application required much self-reflection and notably, the courage to put myself out there – to demonstrate an excitement and commitment to continue learning, regardless of my career stage. Between the time of my nomination submission in October and the award notification in January, many life changes had occurred. We started building a new house, we were drafting our programme description and I was covering for multiple positions while short staffed. I was completely caught by surprise and in total shock when I received the email (which I must have read and re-read three or four times) from Kathryn Bayne, Chief Executive Officer for AAALAC, International, that I had been selected for this tremendous honour. Prior to embarking on my commitment to the AAALAC Fellowship journey, I had to consider my learning goals and how to best capitalise on this incredible opportunity. I spent time at various team meetings asking colleagues from across the university what they would like to know and what insights from the UK they would be most interested in learning. The list became quite long. As my itinerary began to develop, I focussed on the specific questions I would ask of the various groups I would be meeting. Examples included:– Are you “tunnel handling” for cage changing or for other reasons?– Tell me about your public outreach and other processes involving work transparency.– Has the Openness Initiative made a significant impact?– Who has ultimate oversight in the facility?– Do you have tools for operationalising programme management data (electronic medical records, husbandry procedures, breeding records)?– Is there acknowledgement and/or support for compassion fatigue?– How are report metrics, such as compliance, used for benchmarking with other institutions? When I reviewed my itinerary, my nerves came racing back – I would not consider myself an experienced traveller. To repel this anxiety, I broke down my schedule for each day I would be away from home. Where would I be each morning, afternoon and evening? What did I need to prepare for the next day? How would I be travelling from location to location? Then, before I knew it, I was in London. Thankfully, I had a few days to adjust to the time change and explore a bit, including stumbling upon the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (scoring 11 out of 10 for people-watching) before preparing for my Day 1 visit at The Crick Institute.

Page 29

BulletinOctober 2023 • 29In addition to The Crick, I also visited a variety of facilities during my fi rst week: – Defence Science Technology Laboratory (DTSL) Center for Macaques– Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology (MRC-LMB) – Understanding Animal Research– King’s College London It is nearly impossible to highlight all the cool experiences from that fi rst week! I was introduced to a new species (for me, at least), the short-tailed opossum for which The Crick has the only breeding colony in the UK. A few fascinating facts I learned about this species:• females have no pouch – pups carefully crawl up the belly of the dam, attach themselves to a teat and stay there for weeks• they are smaller than an adult rat• they have very soft tails that are not fully prehensile I could have spent all day in the opossum room talking with the extremely skilled technician who handled this unique species with the utmost care. I also learned that The Crick’s team use an innovative database to directly connect with Transnetyx, track various data for their rodent colonies and monitor researcher-specifi c tasks. In addition to their wonderful facilities and staff, The Crick has also committed to sharing their discoveries with the larger community via various outreach initiatives. For my next stop, I took a short train ride to Salisbury to meet the team at the Porton Down Centre for Macaques, a government-managed facility. After passing through extensive security, I spent the day with three members of the team – Claire, Seb and Katie – in a macaque production building. In addition to being fantastic hosts, it was clear to see the bond this special team shares with their animals; they know their tendencies and personalities and worked especially hard to maintain social groups together. All animals had access to a very large fl oor-to-ceiling window that viewed the outdoors, as well as locations to get away from the group or partake in the many provided enrichment items. As soon as visitors would walk into the main hallway, the

Page 30

Bulletin30 • October 2023 animals would run to a large internal viewing window and use a handle to control a mirror that would allow them to see who was in the hallway and what they were doing. Watching them move the mirrors and follow your moving about the hallway was beyond adorable. Like our National Institutes of Health in the US, the UK has government-fundedfacilities such as the MRC. The MRC funds projects all around the UK and isdirectly connected to various facilities. I visited two MRC sites, the fi rst being the Babraham campus, where a truly wonderful team greeted me with information about their organisation, highlights from their processes of setting team values, training personnel, and tracking metrics. I was also able to see a live demonstration using ultrasound to detect pregnancy in mice and estimate the date of parturition to assist in scheduling transport from the barrier for experimental work. The second MRC site I visited was a facility in Cambridge focussed entirely on molecular biology. After a bit of dining and sightseeing with the MRC Team, I spent the following day with Alan Graham, from the University of Cambridge. We began the day with a brief tour around Cambridge and then travelled to a farm facility where studies involve the gestational impacts of hypoxia during pregnancy and diet-induced obesity. The tails of this ‘wild strain’ of highland sheep are not docked, and the animals are generally smaller. Most live in open paddocks, with some occasionally released to pasture. After the farm, we drove to Madingly to visit a collection of highly-enriched fi sh tanks containing various cichlids and fl ight pens for jays. These fascinating birds are excellent mimics of noises and voices and are involved in studies related to object recognition and caching. Next, we visited the marmoset colony near the Veterinary College at Cambridge. One of only two breeding groups in the UK, this was also my fi rst experience seeing such a large breeding facility for marmosets. The animals are located in a building where there are a variety of neuroscience and behavioral studies taking place. As part of this innovative housing environment, the animals receive different enrichment items ranging from nesting boxes to interactive

Each Fellowship winner receives a ‘free’ weekend to further explore either Cambridge or London. While I chose to take my free weekend in London, there is certainly more to see in Cambridge (a suggestion for future Fellows!).On Friday, I took a walking tour of London on my way to meet Wendy, Hannah and Kate from Understanding Animal Research. I spent several hours learning about their mission and strategic plans for the next few years, including opportunities to expand outreach and transparency efforts within the United States. I learned that the path to openness and transparency continues to be met with some opposition but that there is also growing support in the community for the ethical use of animals in biomedical research. Specifi c efforts to increase public understanding include enhanced access to schools so that teachers may request a speaker and researchers or technicians who have been specially recruited and trained can present. The group has also focussed on expanding their social media footprint, where they have seen increased interaction(s) with posts that highlight the role that technicians play in advancing research. I continued across the river to King’s College London for a tour of their

Bulletin32 • October 2023 Zebrafi sh facility. The facility at KCL was very large and employed nine robots to feed an extensive row of tanks. Technicians are responsible for juveniles to avoid overfeeding. The level of trust and partnership between animal care staff and the researchers at this facility was clearly evident and I was impressed by the systems they had in place to request animals and/or support from vivarium staff. At the end of week one, I enjoyed a sense of relief for successfully navigatingplanes, trains, taxis and the busy city streets of London’s many boroughs; accomplishment for having toured many unique facilities; and appreciation for my wonderful hosts. When I was not busy preparing for week two, I had a chance to spend my ‘free’ weekend exploring London. On Saturday, I visited the Tower of London and met a true Yeoman Warder. On Sunday, I visited London Zoo to see their many progressive exhibits. Highlights of my time at the zoo include seeing the large area where the African wild dogs run and witnessing their keeper hiding all kinds of meat, bones and other treats; walking through the middle of the black and white colobus monkey exhibit which has no fences, nets or gates to separate visitors from the animals; and exploring the canal/sidewalk/bike path that runs through the middle of the zoo to allow members of the public to visit several exhibits free-of-charge.I would be remiss if I did not also mention London’s impressive public parks where most residents walk their dogs off-leash. It was remarkable to see such a wide array of breeds all behaving amazingly well – not a single negative dog

BulletinOctober 2023 • 33interaction and no running up to random strangers! The UK has not allowed ear or tail docking in dogs for many years, so it was also fascinating to see several common US dog breeds such as Dobermans and Fox Terriers, in their ‘purest’ versions.I began the second week of my journey at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre, which was founded in 1936 by pharmaceutical engineer Sir Henry Wellcome. Sainsbury, which receives funding and support from the charitable Wellcome Foundation as well as others, is dedicated to collaborations supporting discoveries of how the brain elicits behaviour. In support of this mission, my hosts (Sian, Tina, Joe and Dario) showed me their state-of-the-art 3D fabrication and printing shop. I also visited one of their open fi eld behaviour environments where they mimicked approaching prey by allowing animals to demonstrate species specifi c behaviours to dig for food and then retreat from a threat. On Tuesday, I travelled to the Institute of Animal Technology Congress, the UK equivalent of our National AALAS Meeting, via a beautiful train ride across England to the Celtic Manor in Newport, South Wales. On the fi rst evening there was a kickoff event where the trade provided short, 60-second pitches on their products. In lieu of hosting a large social event in a hotel conference room, each vendor hosted a small activity at their respective booths to further engage participants in conversation. Wednesday and Thursday were full of excellent programmes and learning sessions and provided great opportunities for technical staff and husbandry technicians to present their work. As a facility manager, I was quite pleased to see the emphasis on the operational aspects of our fi eld including husbandry practices and technical services and the opportunities for technical staff to present.

Page 34

Bulletin34 • October 2023 As you can imagine, it is difficult to try and summarise two weeks’ worth of extraordinary experiences, facility visits and interactions with peers from ‘across the pond’. In short, there are many ways of performing similar work. When we create space to share our unique perspectives, we not only learn new ways to advance and refine our own work, but we also advance the field of laboratory animal science by building a common understanding – and shared appreciation – for the challenges and successes of our colleagues.I am impressed by the significant focus on the 3Rs seen across the UK, as well as the myriad efforts to advance openness and transparency. In that same vein, the UK has a sophisticated training and apprentice process that produces extremely skilled technicians and study support teams. It was truly eye opening to hear researchers talk about the level of trust they have in their animal care teams, especially when suggestions for improvement to processes and procedures were made. While understanding that every institution and every programme has its own set of circumstances, I know that there is more that we – in the US and at the University of Michigan – can do to enhance our education to schools and colleges about careers in laboratory animal science. I look forward to applying this knowledge to initiatives within my own institution and am pleased to share all that I have learned with other members of the US laboratory animal community. Finally, I would be remiss if I did not take a moment to acknowledge the many individuals at AAALAC who helped with planning the logistics for this complex trip, the gracious hosts at the institutions I visited, my colleagues at the University of Michigan for supporting my time away and for nominating me for this prestigious award and my family for allowing me 16 days away from home.If you remember nothing else, share your experiences with others and seize every opportunity to learn. Be proud of what you know, encouraged by what you do not YET know, and perhaps above all else, when the time comes to expand your horizons – be brave.

BulletinOctober 2023 • 37North East Branch Practical Skills Workshop The North East England branch decided on a practical skills workshop at Durham University for this year’s educational event. The aim of the session was to offer a range of brief, interactive workshops that could be delivered to small groups in a relaxed setting. The target audience was early career technicians but workshops were suitable for anyone wanting to get a taster, or refresher of skills that they may not be able to access in their own workplace. The day kicked off with registration between 10 and 11am, lots of people were a bit too well prepared and arrived early, so thankfully they could have a brew and mingle with trade while the Branch committee fi nished off stuffi ng goody bags. We were then able to get on with registration, handing out lanyards and goody bags full of trade freebies, and confi rming everyone’s workshop choices for the day.At 11am, Branch Chairperson Nathan Hill offi cially opened the day by welcoming everyone and thanking trade and our wonderful speakers. Delegates went off in groups to attend their fi rst workshops – the sessions on offer throughout the day were as follows:Suturing with Joanne Bland from University of Sheffi eld and delegates –– Learnt how to place sutures correctly.– Gained a deeper understanding of the differences between the commonly used suturing equipment and materials available. – Understood better the different suturing patterns – their advantages and disadvantages. Great for anyone starting out downthe path of surgical procedures.

Matt talked about his work to develop recognition and scoring systems for assessing pain in animals, the most familiar of which is probably the grimace scale. He explained how these systems are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of analgesia in circumstances and species where pain and distress may previously have gone unnoticed and untreated. The branch would like to extend a huge thank you to all of our attendees, the amazing speakers who delivered great sessions, Adele for arranging the venue and our trade sponsors Agenda, Clinipath, Datesand, Inotiv, IPS, LBS, MMM, NKP Isotec and Tecniplast all of whom make these events possible by their support.Reporter: John Blandrecognition and scoring systems for assessing pain in animals, the most familiar
