Bulletin4 • October 2022 Her Majesty Queen Elizabethii1926 – 2022It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on Thursday 8th September 2022. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family at this time. This is a tremendously sad time not only the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her.The Queen was our longest serving monarch and saw many changes during her reign. A remarkable woman who served her country with dignity, loyalty and grace. Her Majesty had a lifelong love of animals, surrounding herself with horses and dogs for all her life. Although perhaps most known for her corgis and dorgis, the Queen has also had a variety of pets and working animals. There have been numerous, less usual, animal gifts from around the world, from giraffes, turtles, cheetahs to sloths. These have all been donated to zoos or wildlife sanctuaries and not kept at the palace. Her Majesty was also a great fan of horse racing, being heavily involved with the Royal Stud and took an active interest in the breeding of her horses including choosing bloodlines and names. She was responsible for a number of major winners over the past fi fty years, including Pall Mall, Almera and Canisbay. The Queen often attended race meetings, both as a race horse owner and also in an offi cial capacity at such meetings as the Derby and Royal Ascot. The Queen was Patron of over 30 animal charities from the RSPCA to The Red Poll Cattle Society and the Labrador Retriever Club. Many of the charities refl ect Her Majesty’s personal interests: she was Patron of The Royal Pigeon Racing Association and owned her own pigeons which are kept on the Sandringham Estate; her Patronage of the Royal Windsor Horse Show was a natural choice as the Royal Family have been involved with the event since its inception and her involvement with the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association was indicative of her private interest in breeding and racing horses.Queen Elizabeth was Monarch during many diffi cult and changing times but proved herself to be one of the most effective and best-loved sovereigns the nation has known. She will be greatly missed. The IAT offi ce was closed on the day of the state funeral as a mark of respect.condolences are with her family at this time. BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …Keep Reading!CarolePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5BulletinOctober 2022 • 5 I cannot believe it is October again, time seems to fl y by and that means it is only fi ve months until Congress 2023! I hope everyone is busy considering how and what they are going to be presenting there. Perhaps an oral presentation of some of the work you have been doing? As Animal Technologists, I like to think we are at the forefront of animal wellbeing, both in noticing where and how refi nement can be implemented. If you have never spoken and presented before, why not contemplate the fi rst time speaker session, scary? Possibly but the participants and audience are very supportive. Perhaps a group of your work colleagues have created ways of working, that you think could be benefi cial to our community, why not consider presenting those ideas in a workshop – less daunting than standing up in front of everyone on your own? Posters are always a great way to introduce both yourself and your work to your peers and never think that you do not have something to add to husbandry improvement and enhancement, we all do. To get involved, see pages 7, 18 and 29. I look forward to seeing everyone and hearing all about how you have all changed animal welfare for the better. The Nort East England Branch reports on an enrichment symposium on pages 9 – 13 and this provides a great example of a collaboration of people coming together to improve and benefi t animal interests. In the morning a workshop, then presentations in the afternoon, with trade partners also adding to the dialogue. It sounds like everyone had the opportunity to participate and learn, which, as discussed in the previous paragraph, I also hope happens at Congress. The ice breaker used at the symposium has also been reproduced on page 21, have a go and see how you do, answers coming next month! In the meantime,Keep Reading!Carole

Simon CummingHonorary SecretaryNorth East England Branch Enrichment SymposiumJune 30th 2022 – Durham UniversityFor our first face-to-face educational event in over two years, the North East England Branch decided on an enrichment theme. We were keen to provide some opportunities for networking and knowledge sharing (technician enrichment), as well as educational talks and a chance to mix with our wonderful trade delegates. On arrival everyone got a trade goody bag, ice breaker sheet and of course, a drink and a biscuit. The day kicked off with a workshop led by Adele from Durham University and Zoe from University of Bradford. Delegates were mixed into groups according to their ice breaker sheets and given time to do round-the-table introductions and a short, unusual animals quiz. Trade delegates were also recruited to encourage conversation (because we know they love to talk!) and
Bulletin10 • October 2022 act as spokespeople for the groups. The workshop covered a back-to-basics look at enrichment and consideration of some situations where more common enrichment might not be an option, followed by a section on the importance of good communication between Animal Technicians and those planning or running studies and how this forms a good Culture of Care. After lunch and a bit more time mingling with the trade, the afternoon session started with presentations on Enrichment and Sustainability – lots of establishments are keen to promote sustainability and reduce reliance on single use, disposable items. Mirren from IPS, Ant from LBS and Nicky from Datesand all gave brief presentations on what the big enrichment providers are doing to improve sustainability and reduce their carbon footprint.
BulletinOctober 2022 • 11 Next up was Khia Dobbinson, from the NC3Rs to talk about rat tickling and playpens, she gave a passionate and informative presentation about these two NC3Rs’ initiatives to improve welfare. Rat tickling is a scientifically validated refinement for rats in research, it provides opportunities to improve welfare and scientific outcomes at no extra monetary cost, effectively habituates rats to human handling and improves job satisfaction for Animal Technicians. Playpens have multiple benefits and can be created using entirely recycled items. Khia is happy to be contacted by anyone wanting more information and lots of the training and guidance resources can be found on the NC3Rs website. For the final session of the day, Ash from Newcastle University and Mel from Envigo gave presentations on
Bulletin12 • October 2022 providing enrichment for less common species. Ash spoke about macaques and marmosets and Mel spoke about hamsters, dogs, chickens, and turkeys. Both presentations included lots of pictures and videos with highlights being a macaque taking a bath, turkeys playing a xylophone and dogs chasing bubbles. It was clear that both Ash and Mel were enthusiastic and committed to providing high quality enrichment to the animals in their care.Acknowledgements and resourcesFeedback from the event has been positive and we would like to thank everyone who attended and made it such a great day. Massive thanks go to Adele from Durham University for sorting out the venue and catering, all

BulletinOctober 2022 • 19 Sir Colin Blakemore1944 – 2022It is with deep regret we report the death of Professor Sir Colin Blakemore FRS at the age of 78. Sir Colin was a vociferous advocate of the use of animals in research at a time during the 1980s and 90s when the animal rights movement had become increasingly violent and when most users of research animals kept their heads well below the parapet. Despite serious threats to himself and family, including a parcel bomb opened by his children which fortunately failed to detonate, he continued to defend the use of animals in his research on the brain. Sir Colin sought to understand why children born with a squint, could grow up with seriously impaired vision in one eye, in fact many were functionally blind in the affected eye. A condition known as amblyopia. His experiments on the developing visual system in cats suggested that patching the eyes of affected children for a short period of time during an early critical period of development could lead to the development of new visual pathways and improved their vision. His studies contributed to a growing understanding of neural plasticity, the idea that the brain retains the ability to rewire itself in response to changes in its environment. These findings have radically altered the traditional view that brain damage is irreversible. Blakemore’s advocacy emphasised the strict controls of research using animals that British laboratories work under. In an online Understanding Animal Research (UAR) discussion in 2016 Sir Colin wrote “It is important for everyone who uses animals in their research to think about two things, whether the benefits of the research really outweigh the moral cost of using animals; and whether it might be possible to develop new alternative methods”. Appointed as Chief Executive of the Medical Research Council (MRC) in 2003, Colin Blakemore instigated reforms at the MRC in response to criticisms in the House of Commons before his appointment, on its management. He threatened to resign unless a Minister publicly reinstated the Government’s backing for those scientists who used animals in their laboratories and received support from the then Prime Minister, Tony Blair. Sir Colin received his knighthood in 2014, some 6 years after the end of his term of office at the MRC. Colin married his childhood sweetheart in 1965, who sadly died in January 2022. After his retirement in 2007, Blakemore held various chairs at universities in both the UK and around the world. He was President of the Motor Neurone Disease Association from 2008 – 2019 and ironically was himself diagnosed with this fatal neurodegenerative condition in 2021. He is survived by his daughters.

Health and WellbeingTo continue the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Let’s Talk series, we arefocussing on general health and wellbeing. Animal Technologists devotetheir careers to looking after animals used in medical research and thewelfare of their animals is of paramount importance. Current qualityCulture of Care policies centre around providing the best welfare toensure laboratory animals have the best possible life, whilst contributingto a better understanding of some of the world’s major diseases.Whilst putting so much care and attention into their animals, it is quite easy to forget an importantelement of Culture of Care is the health and wellbeing of the Animal Technologists involved. Youcan only afford excellent care and compassion if you are well within yourself. The role of the AnimalTechnologist leads to a roller coaster of emotions and it is important to keep on top of these emotionsto avoid emotional burn out. There has been considerable previous work conducted within the UK to establish parity of esteembetween physical and mental health (Morton & O’Reilly, 2019, Mitchell et al 2017). Currentmental health policies aim to improve mental health and wellbeing, prevent the onset of mentaland emotional distress and increase resilience. The nature of the relationship between physical andmental health is interlinked with mental health influencing physical health and vice versa.Good health and wellbeing are important in ensuring that all Animal Technologists are able to givethe best form of themselves to their animals and ensure compliance to standards of Animal Welfareas practiced within the UK. As identified in previous articles, we have discussed that It’s OK … not tobe OKAY and if your health and wellbeing are being affected there are steps you can take. The five step approach is well documented (https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/guides-tools-and-activities/five-steps-to-mental-wellbeing/), and how can we embrace this within our industry?1.Connect with colleagues. Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. They can:- Help you build a sense of belonging and self-worth.- Give you an opportunity to share positive experiences and talk about the not so positive/challenging aspects of the Animal Technologist’s role.- Provide emotional support and accept support from others. The best people who understand what animal techs experience, are other Animal Technicians. Use them for support.- Try to set some time aside during the day to ensure you connect with others, at lunch or a tea break. - Try talking about issues outside of the workplace if it is a tough day.- See family or friends after work to switch off. If this is not possible use technology such as Teams, Zoom or FaceTime where you can see the person.- Use the journey home for reflection.2. Be Active- Try to carry out some physical activity following a day at work which is important for physical and mental wellbeing.- Try exercise such as cycling, walking, swimming, running, going to the gym maybe with a friend. This will help to refocus your mind.Let’s Talk about ... Health and Wellbeingwww.iat.org.uk3. Learn new skills- This is vitally important within a role that may be repetitive at times and it is easy for your mind to wander. Learning new skills will ensure your mind is focussed on the task ahead. This will alsohelp you with a sense of achievement and can be a focus point. This could also be extended tohome life too, try cooking something new or adventurous, take up a new hobby or learn a newlanguage. Just find activities that you enjoy and are not pressured to do.4. Supporting others- If you are feeling like things are starting to get on top of you, remember you are not alone. The feelings you are having are not unique and others before you and after you will feelthe same, this is the emotion of caring. Reach out to others, this will improve your mentalwellbeing, as research suggests that the act of giving and kindness will improve your wellbeingby creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, also giving you a feeling of purpose. Do notunderestimate how much reaching out to a colleague and offering support can help not justthem but you also. Being that ear that your colleague may need, helps so much and you neverknow that maybe a shared experience could help.5. Pay attention to the present (Mindfulness)- In the throes of a busy and hectic schedule it can be quite easy to forget to pay attention to your own thoughts, feelings and your body. This awareness of your mind and body is commonlytermed Mindfulness. Mindfulness has the potential to reduce depressive thoughts, increaseemotional regulation, reduce anxiety and stress, improve memory, improve cognitive abilityand lead to better physical health (https://www.verywellmind.com/the-benefits-of-mindfulness-5205137) https://neweconomics.org/2011/07/five-ways-well-new-applications-new-ways-thinkingWhat to do if you feel you are not copingIt is important to seek help if you feel that things are getting on top of you. BulletinOctober 2022 • 25 Learn more about rat playpens with a new online resource Conventional cages limit the ability of rats to explore, exercise and engage in species-specific behaviours, such as climbing, burrowing, and upright stretching. These constraints on rat behaviour can negatively impact on their physical and psychological health, leading to unhealthy animals and potentially unreliable data. Rat playpens provide an opportunity to address the welfare issues associated with standard caging, and can also create positive change for animal technicians, researchers, and facilities. To find out more about the benefits of providing rats with playpen access visit the NC3Rs online rat playpen resource, which also includes: ▪ Answers to your common rat playpen questions. ▪ Practical tips for setting up a rat playpen in your facility. ▪ Video content, including a rat playpen webinar. www.nc3rs.org.uk/rat-playpens With thanks to University College London, University of Leicester, and University of Bristol for images.
