8 October 2020 Bulletin ANIMAL TECHNOLOGY IN THE 70s and Onwards H i everyone just wanted to let you all know what a great career choice being an Animal Technician can be and how many great opportunities there are for you to embrace Having left school in 1968 at the age of 15 with certi cates in English and Technical Drawing I had a workshop job until 1970 when a friend who worked in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine told me there is a job going where I work scraping out cages and feeding animals This was how I started my career as a Junior Animal Technician in May 1970 Initially I had no concept of what an Animal Technician s role or indeed scienti c research was but with a proper wage of around 11 per week I was going to give it a go LSTM Tea Room Next to Bill McGoldrick IAT OCT BULLETIN20 indd 8 22 09 2020 09 07

Bulletin October 2020 9 At the time animal house staff were not truly recognised as Technicians not least as we wore scruffy jeans t shirts and wellington boots rather than white lab coats and of course the tool of our trade was the scraper although we did have a good relationship with the scientists using the animals Back then the environment was very different and much more relaxed However my boss Terry Cullingham was very pedantic and passionate about animal welfare standards and technician training development so he encouraged me to join the IAT I was very fortunate to work with many different species during my time at the Trop Shop as it was called and would mostly be more akin to a description of a zoological environment these days The species included rodents rabbits dogs cats ferrets foxes New and Old World primates snakes mountain hyrax cotton rats canaries and various farm animals including cows sheep turkeys ducks and chickens It was an excellent start to what unknown to me was to become a lifetime career and to create and maintain many long term friendships Holding anaesthetised Rhesus LSTM note minimal PPE IAT OCT BULLETIN20 indd 9 22 09 2020 09 07

10 October 2020 Bulletin Back in the early 70s our animal environment had little or no forced ventilation with limited temperature and humidity control working with open topped plastic cages and primitive wire cages particularly for primates which were often wild captured and with different species housed in the same room e g Macaques Baboons and Vervet Monkeys whose future welfare became one of my lifetime passions for improvement It is dif cult to imagine nowadays that we often worked alone at weekends with very little contact with our senior and veterinary colleagues Small animals where often delivered by rail into Lime Street station and Animal Technicians had to walk to collect them and carry them through pedestrian streets back to the facility Environmental Enrichment entailed various items such as empty jam jars toilet roll inners and clay and plastic piping old diet bags etc often brought into work from home However later in my career I was able to develop some innovative enrichment products for example NestPaks for rodents Working under the not so aptly named Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 for 16 years was very different before it was superseded 110 years later by the Animals Scienti c Procedures Act 1986 By then fortunately our industry and indeed the role played by Animal Technicians had made signi cant improvements and developments to both the animals environment and their welfare The role of Animal Technicians was evolving alongside the design and planning of scienti c research Lunch time With Terry Cullingham Chief Tech and Bill McGoldrick IAT OCT BULLETIN20 indd 10 22 09 2020 09 07
