Educating Young Minds How to Develop a by KJ Walton Growth Creating a life long learning culture in the home Educating Young Minds You may or may not have heard of Growth and Fixed Mindsets As a parent I would be surprised if you had not come across the terms They stem from widely published research into motivation by Professor Carol Dweck which has been adopted into a lot of Schools world wide as the findings are so compelling particularly in relation to children and their motivation to learn It is this that lies at the foundation of all schools if children WANT to learn this makes the process of educating much more straightforward and enjoyable for all concerned It also sets children up as life long learners which is crucial in the everchanging world in which we live today dset The two different Mindsets a person can hold and people As a teacher and new parent myself it seems to me that the are a mixture of each at different times are Growth and question is not Do I want children to grow up being nurtured Fixed Each stem from differing beliefs about the brain The and encouraged to develop these values but more How do Fixed approach is led by the idea that the brain is Fixed the I nurture and encourage them to develop them intelligence we are born with is the end of the story and Fixed Mindset Dweck s research has shown that it is all about the silent there is not a lot we can do to alter that intelligence The You avoid messages you send to children through how you react and Growth Mindset is led by the idea that our brains can grow Challenges You give up easily and develop as proven by our advancing understanding of respond to what they do and say With a few honed ways of You see effort as pointless and reacting neuroscience You ignore responding useful or negative feedback to children s activities we can help You hate criticism them to achieve a way of thinking that will help them grow in hate making mistakes the face of challenge rather than wither The research undertaken by Dweck and her StanfordYou team You feel threatened by the success of others has led to these features of behaviour to be an outcome of Achieve less than full potential each Mindset Deterministic view of the world it is how it is and cannot be changed Fixed Mindset Growth Mindset You avoid Challenges You believe intelligence can be developed leads to a desire to learn Challenges You give up easily You embrace challenges p easily You see effort as pointless You persist in the face of set backs ort as pointless You ignore useful or negative feedback Set backs don t discourage you useful or negative feedback You hate criticism You see set backs as an opportunity to learn not worried about looking good riticism You hate making mistakes You see effort as the path to mastery making mistakes You feel threatened by the success of others Learn from criticism reatened by the success of others Achieve less than full potential Learn from mistakes s than full potential Deterministic view of the world it is how it is and cannotFind be changed lessons and inspiration in the success of others stic view of the world it is how it is and cannot be changed Reach higher levels of achievement Greater sense of free will being able to achieve what you want indset Growth Mindset You believe intelligence can be developed leads to a desire to learn e intelligence can You be developed leads to a desire to learn embrace challenges ce challenges You persist in the face of set backs t in the face of set backs Set backs don t you KID S Odiscourage N THE CO S TA F A M I LY G U I D E don t 14 discourage You you see set backs as an opportunity to learn not worried about looking good t backs as an opportunity to learn not worried about looking good You see effort as the path to mastery 29

Mindset Praise Dweck and her Stanford research team found that the kind of praise that a parent gives their babies and toddlers influences the child s motivation five years later Not only that but it effects their self belief and their future desire to take on challenges They found that children who had been given more process praise were more likely to prefer challenges than those who had been exposed to more intelligence based praise Instead of telling a child how clever and talented they are intelligence praise which is empty praise as it tells them nothing and is simply gives them the short term feel good factor you are better to focus your praise on the process effort and strategies they have used to do something much more focused on long term learning What is good about what they have done and how have they achieved that Process praise is more specific than generalised as is the case with intelligence praise It takes a little more time on the part of the adult to notice and spark up a little discussion about the child s endeavours which is probably in part why it is a less natural response in our fast moving lives of today It is however a subtlety than can make a big difference The child hears the message What you value in my achievements is effort and careful consideration of how I am honing my Tel rather 34 620 741 361 skills to get better than What you value from me is results you like it when I m brilliant and produce things Educating Young Minds Children who are given more process praise are more likely to prefer challenges than those who have been exposed to more intelligence based praise quickly and perfectly They are two very different responses each instigated by the way in which we have praised their endeavours They will also determine how the children will attack a task in the future Children like praise so will repeat the behaviours they think will get them that praise Openly value mistakes and failure If you consistently praise children s intelligence they will learn to protect that intelligence at all costs and fear mistakes and failure Therefore they will be unlikely to want to tackle challenges where these outcomes are likely What we should be encouraging is reflection of how to improve if things go wrong What have they learnt as a result and encourage them to try again This is what learning is It is not about the perfect end result it is about the journey not just the destination share your own mistakes with them and share how they helped you to learn In class we applaud mistakes and see why they were mistakes Mistakes are expected and not something to be feared Mistakes are cute little characters in my book A Muddle of Mistakes to make them fun Rewards Rewards that are extrinsic stickers sweets certificates etc often do not appreciate Growth Mindset values What we hope for eventually is that children are rewarded intrinsically for their actions and achievements that is that the act or 2017 2018 EDITION 15

Educating Young Minds Inevitably we all have Fixed Mindset moments in life we are all human It is important that adults and children alike are honest when Fixed moments happen and talk about it Educating Young Minds achievement in itself is all the reward that is needed In giving extrinsic rewards we are sending out the message that it s only worth doing things to get something material in return This won t happen all the time as they grow up so what happens when there is no reward However children like reward and it is hard to take this element of societal norm away from them A compromise is therefore to reward when we see Growth Mindset behaviours displayed by them One Mum I know has a chart on which she records all the GM acts her children display and when they have clocked up 20 between them they do something nice they have chosen together as a family Daily Learning Discussions It is important to talk to children about their learning to show them that learning and the features outlined by the GM theory see table are important to you After all you are the role model Be explicit about your own learning and when Growth and Fixed moments have effected you Instead of greeting children from their return from school with How was your day instead ask them What did you learn today or What mistake did you make today that you learnt from and share one of your own Tune into your Fixed Mindset voice Inevitably we all have Fixed Mindset moments in life we are all human It is important that adults and children alike are honest when Fixed moments happen and talk about it Why is it Fixed and what can be done to change things to make them more Growth Hearing and being receptive to our Fixed Mindset voice when it occurs is crucial Perhaps you could name your Fixed voices so they are treated as little characters which you Tel 34 620 741 361 can refer to when they speak If you can t spot those Fixed moments how can you become more Growth As a family you could become Mindset spotters 16 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E Being a Mindset focused parent carer is first about fully understanding the Mindset features yourself see table It s about considering what underlying message you are sending children in how you react and respond It s about being specific with children about what they have done that you like and it is about everybody in the home environment noticing their own learning behaviours and openly trying to alter them if they are not particularly helpful and a bit Fixed It s a way of talking and living that goes to create a life long learning culture in your home from which all can benefit KJ Walton is a Primary School teacher based in Cambridge UK and Mindset Author Illustrator Mindset Speaker Keep an eye out for Katie s new book The Mindset Guardian Companion a guide for parents and care givers on how to create a Growth Mindset environment www growthmindset org

Educating Young Minds The Ark Christian School Putting Family at the Heart of Education The Ark Christian School was established 8 years ago when its leaders recognised that while the Spanish education system can work for some it does not necessarily suit every child and for those families alternative international schools may not meet their needs either Situated in Mijas Costa the Ark is the perfect place for families who are looking for a school with a village feel They put family at the heart of education and work in partnership with parents to recognise their child s strengths and weaknesses Teachers at The Ark are open and receptive to communication with parents either face to face or electronically through a program called Class Dojo Educating Young Minds All teachers are encouraged to empower the students to develop their areas of strength while assessing them to ascertain the best way to teach them in their weaker subjects They pay attention to the learning styles of their students and incorporate different teaching methods to ensure that each student can access the curriculum Testimonials Student At the Ark Christian School I feel happy It is fun and the teachers work really hard It has helped me with most of the things I know I have progressed so much in life because of the Ark Christian School Teacher Having worked atThe Ark Christian School for 4 years I feel secure happy and appreciated in my role as a primary teacher I have maintained wonderful relationships with my children colleagues and parents It has been a pleasure to be part of this team and to watch the school grow Parent We LOVE the Ark Our kids are thriving academically here They have just come alive in this kind fun stimulating environment One thing we appreciate so much is how the teachers want each student to succeed The teachers are so concerned about how to help each of my kids learn in a way that is best for them At the ARK school is not boring I appreciate the reasonable homework load the creativity they want from my kids and the way each kid is respected and cared for We are so happy with our experience at the ARK Adapting to a new school environment be it starting school moving country or changing education system can be hard for students Therefore to assist students in the transition they offer two trial days as well as having a dedicated pastoral care team This allows our families to feel comfortable with the changes they are making for their children The Ark is now a Cambridge International School and is able to offer A Levels in Year 12 More information can be found on their website or pop in for a friendly informative chat Tel 34 952 588 255 Web www thearkchristianschool org 18 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E

NURSERY SCHOOL COLLEGE Health and DIRECTORY Wellbeing Magical Muuti Land Muuti is an exciting new range of healthy organic fruit and vegetable smoothies that have been produced for children with love Each pack features an animal from the magical Muuti Land and each has a special skill or power that kids can identify with The mischievous monkey likes bananas and blueberries the shy elephant loves raspberries and pears and the wise fox enjoys carrots apples and bananas There is also a koala and a lion each with its own childpleasing recipe He soon realised that other parents shared his frustration at the lack of kids juices on the market that did not contain additives or added sugar so decided to produce his own smoothies that time starved and health conscious parents would welcome with open arms His key objective was to develop a product with soul that was easy to take away and use on the go So he developed the Muuti pouches a delicious and tasty snack that kids can enjoy at home at school or in the car anywhere in fact where all the snacks are healthy and additive free Health Wellbeing Self Help The Muuti organic snacks and Muuti Land are the invention of Finnish business man Charles Kuhlman He was frustrated at not being able to find organic healthy snacks for his toddler without additives and sweeteners and hence resorted to making fresh fruit smoothies at home More Muuti products are on the way Charles is also working on additions to the healthy snack range healthy lollipops sweetened with xylitol which is good for the teeth a super cool on the go organic milk powder mix for babies and toddlers with its own thermo cup and a rice milk protein beverage for young adults and active people So watch this space The Muuti Land mobile app Charles believes learning about healthy eating is vital for children and because products with unhealthy ingredients dominate the kids snack industry he wants his brand to stand out as the one that emphasises the importance of wellness in a style that engages with his target market children That s why in addition to the snacks Charles is launching an educational mobile app called MuutiLAND The app will be aimed at children from eight months old to toddlers although slightly older kids will enjoy the mobile game that includes educational games based around maths history biology art sports dancing singing cooking and nutrition The app will be available at iOS and android Discover Muuti at muutiofficial com or follow them at Muutiglobal Muutiofficial 2017 2018 EDITION 35

Health and Wellbeing by Francisco Acedo Protect your children from the Sun to avoid the risk of malignant Melanoma in adulthood Health Wellbeing Self Help Direct exposure to sunlight is never beneficial and should always be done in appropriate doses and following recommended habits through childhood Pediatricians and dermatologists confirm this children who suffered more than three episodes of sunburn have ten times the risk of developing malignant melanomas as adults The latest awareness campaigns focus on proper photoprotection especially along the Costa del Sol one of the areas in southern Europe where it s sunny almost all year round Specialists recommend observing a minimum set of healthy behaviors emphasizing that applying sunscreen is not enough and that many people fail to use it correctly Dr Magdalena Troya head of Dermatology in the Costa del Sol Hospital Marbella points out that we need a new culture in dealing with the Sun and we should begin teaching it from a very young age This should be taught at school The effect of sunlight on our skin is cumulative and permanent like a photocopy that cannot be erased In fact official data indicate that 80 of the solar radiation we receive is during childhood Statistics from the Health Ministry of Spain show that melanoma cases have tripled over the past 30 years and the most common cases appear between the ages of 25 and 30 One in four inhabitants in Spain will suffer some form of skin cancer in their lifetimes The most common mistake is believing that the only risk is overexposing during the summer between July and August On the contrary specialists insist on the need to protect our skin from the Sun through all seasons and not only when we are at the beach or in an open air swimming pool Special attention must be placed on outdoor sports or during playtime in school as 80 of our direct exposure occurs during those activities and they present the highest risk Although photoprotection will not avoid sunburns completely it is a 36 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E mitigating factor Parents families and schools should teach children how to protect themselves from the Sun properly Dermatologists emphasize three major mistakes in our relationship with the Sun that are signs of cultural misconceptions SUNBURNS These should be avoided The Sun is good for our health but always in a proper dose CASES While other types of cancerous tumors are diminishing melanoma is on the rise Breast and colon cancer have gone down largely thanks to multiple awareness campaigns But at the same time skin cancer has tripled in the last 30 years EXPOSURE We are spending more time outdoors than ever so prevention must become our number one concern Pay special attention to changes in moles and skin spots In any case of damage or changes in size or color you should consult with your physician immediately Francisco Acedo Torregrosa is a Spanish journalist specializing in health and sports He is the editor and managing director of the digital newspaper Al Sol de la Costa which covers daily news in the area that goes from Marbella to Gibraltar La hora de la Salud Radio 107 6 FM info alSoldelaCosta com Follow on Twitter acedotor

BY AMIANA The The Young Guide Young Guide In Association with Marbella Lifestyle The Young Guide Social media has hit ground braking figures and one of the more popular media platforms is Snapchat with over 158 000 000 daily active users mostly teens who create 2 5 billion snaps a day This type of media is a way for teenagers to expand their social circles create some independence get noticed start trends and share their opinions by simply liking retweeting sharing and commenting on popular social posts But is it all just an illusion and how does this affect a young persons emotional and mental development Is the quality of life for a young person now determined by how many likes they get or followers they have Only time will tell Society has created a culture of fashion conscious teens that have become obsessed with the way they look and more importantly the way others perceive them Tattoos and body piercings have become more accepted in the last few years with many teen idols promoting them A popular choice are tattoos displaying life s achievements and tragedies Teens even more today are out in hot pursuit to change up their style and stand out from the crowd Whether it be to follow the latest fashion trends a new hairstyle or something more permanent like a tattoo or a body piercing they want to be seen And heard by the sounds of it 2017 2018 EDITION 47 47

The Young Guide Teens today spend most of their waking hours looking at a TV screen with many using their mobile device or some kind of app to watch reality TV or hyped series No longer are they prepared to wait for the following week for the next episode of their favourite series and think nothing of watching an entire series in a day or two just to keep up with their friends Discussing plot twists and new characters being the most important topic the next day But when is it too much How do they distinguish what is real and not Is there anything else they can talk about besides their solitary ambition of being swooped off their feet and land straight into the arms of the next TV hottie Hmm We think not The Young Guide So we know that most young people today are infatuated by how they look and this often starts in the pre teen years Thankfully part of that is centred on exercise and getting fit Now it s cool to workout and fitness brands are investing into active wear that is trendy Teens can now look good getting fit And there are no excuses to try something new fun and get active Try Bouldering Bouldering has become a huge trend in the fitness world With its athletic poise and fun at its core and it s also the ideal activity to challenge yourself There are lots of great natural areas to do bouldering here in southern Spain and it s a great way to be active and do exercise without thinking of it as exercise Bonus Learn about Performance Rock Climbing Programs and Mentorship for Motivated Youth Climbers at www AlphaClimbing com Teenagers always think they know best and this extends to relationships too Peer group pressure makes them believe they aren t popular unless they have a boyfriend or girlfriend and who they choose to be with can affect their social status Being with someone can give them an inflated sense of security and self confidence but when the relationship ends so often does the confidence that can impact on their self esteem We encourage teens to be proud of being single take time to enjoy friendships making life long memories and commit to their learning Be a teen warrior for independence and showcase who you are from the inside out and relationships will happen naturally at the right time and with the right person Lead don t follow 48 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E

Faith Life BY LYNNE DUNCAN What Is Faith You may have a misguided idea of what faith is never thought about it or are living and breathing it in your daily life Faith Life If you haven t really thought about it before then please stay with me as learning about this may transform your way of thinking how you feel and how you interact with others and yourself on a daily basis It s something you can share openly with your family and friends and teach them to use in all areas of their life no matter how young or old Faith Explained Faith for many is difficult to explain and can often raise more questions than answers but for others it can be any or all of the following having trust in someone or something a belief an unseen powerful force a motivational tool inner peace a knowing that God is with you and for you Marivi aged 11 goes to St Andrews Church and for her faith is believing in God Marivi explains I have believed all my life and I believe that without Him we would not be alive today Melanie co founder of The Wave in Puerto Banus tells us It is hard to explain clouds to a young child As a five year old I used to think our aeroplane travelling from Kenya to England was landing on a higher level and we climbed the clouds Faith 50 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E is mystical it is something that requires belief in something that is or seems impossible I have seen physical healings hearts and lives renewed and miraculous coincidences why don t you give faith a try Find YOUR Faith Faith however is absent from you when you are living in fear and troubled with anxieties Fear and anxieties kills the belief that there is hope it takes away the courage to act and prevents us from moving forward positively in our life In Hebrews chapter 11 verse 1 we are reminded that faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see There will be periods in your life where you feel good your health is great you have no financial worries are in positive relationships happy in your job kids are getting on well and it s very easy to have faith during these types of circumstances The real test of faith however is when some or none of this is going our way How then do we handle these situations How does it change us in the process and affect those around us

Faith Life Powerful Force to Help You Overcome The Obstacles and Challenges of Your Life Dave Hodgson Pastor at Calahonda Church and School Governer for The Ark Christian School found his faith when he went to a youth group at church Strengthen Your Faith But where does faith and that inner belief come from to help keep us going Is it simply having faith in your own abilities strength intelligence or is it something bigger than us that is at work Jenny from St Andrews Church shares her belief in God and tells us Even when things in my life are hard I know God is with me I feel his presence through prayer and through the people at my church who pray for me and support me I see him in the Christian friends he s given me and I hear his voice through his Word the Bible and through his answers to my prayers Andrew Pastor of The Ark Fellowship Church in Fuengirola writes 20 years ago faith meant very little and felt it was irrelevant A huge meeting with God turned my life around from someone who had no time to someone who spends all his time serving God Two years ago I fell ill being eventually diagnosed with cancer and then a rare form of leukaemia separately making it even rarer to have both at the same time My faith has been the only thing to keep me going and indeed I am Faith Life I was a bit of a scally always in trouble at school I went to a church youth group because I fancied a girl there I heard how God answered lots of prayers story after story I then heard about Jesus dying on the cross so that all I had done wrong could be forgiven I didn t understand it all but something switched inside of me No longer was I as shy as I once was I didn t fear stuff so much now well My faith in God not only helped me get through but actually healed me as my leukaemia was stopped in its tracks BEFORE my chemotherapy started Just as God told me it would I was even given the exact date by God when I would be given the all clear As my faith has grown others who have seen what my faith has done have seen their faith grow too Keep the Faith It s very easy to give up when all seems hopeless and sadly most people do give up on themselves and others BUT when you have faith true unwavering faith it will help keep you stable within yourself amidst the chaos and though your life may be off track right now or in the future you will get back on again no matter how that might seem impossible at the time to you and others around you Faith is not knowing how or who will help but it will happen You need to believe it Along the way because of the strength of our faith we will learn a lot about ourselves and others during this process and it will be a challenging process but keeping faithful to what you believe and never giving up is paramount Sue co Pastor at Elim Family Fellowship in Benalmadena keeps faithful to her belief in Jesus Faith is trust in salvation through Jesus Christ who died to pay for my sins and receiving eternal life through belief in His sacrificial death As Vicar Adrian from Anglican Church Costa del Sol West puts it Faith is stepping onto ground you cannot see and finding it is safer than the ground you moved from Faith turns our hopes for God hopes for life after death hopes for unconditional love into reality Faith says we don t have to prove it for it to be real 2017 2018 EDITION 51

Empowering Parents By Andrea Robson the kids coach the KIDS COACH TOOLS FOR EMPOWERING PARENTS SAYING NO AND MEANING IT Parents Pinboard If you have ever found yourself giving in to your child s demands you are not alone Increasingly parents are finding it almost impossible to say no without it escalating into lost tempers on both sides Parents know they should say no they want to say no yet the simply can t It s crazy she s had 2 snacks when she came home from school but she wants more I say no she s eaten enough But she s says MUMMY I m so hungry in this baby voice rubbing her tummy She goes on and on so I compromise and I say she can have one in the car on the way to swimming But the whining starts and then the yelling starts I feel so bad what can I do Yes I give her a snack but then she doesn t want to go swimming any more And she s 7 years old Children react this way because they know your limits better than you do They know exactly how to get what they want and every time they do it reinforces that these strategies and behaviours are successful The reality is neither children who get their own way all the time nor parents who give in end up feeling good about the situation The secret is children like want and need boundaries Having limits makes children feel safe and secure if there are no limits no behaviour is unacceptable The good news is you can make changes happen Here are 5 tools in your Parent Toolbox Knowing Your Goals for Your Child You know the kind of values you have for your child the kind of person you want them to be Write them down Be very specific as they are going to be the backbone of what gives you strength during the process of change 54 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E Communicating about feelings Plan a quiet time to talk with about shared feelings avoid cancelling play dates etc as they will feel something has been taken away Explain that there is a problem changes need to be made and you need their help to make it happen Explain that it makes you sad when you argue Distinguish between their BEHAVIOUR and THEM you love them you don t love the behaviour Ask them what they feel about all the arguing Ideally agree that you all want there to be less fighting Reasons and Controlled Choices By explaining the reasons behind saying no it makes children feel respected and valued To be clear you are not answerable to your child you are letting them know the bigger picture In the example of the sandwich you say no because They have already eaten enough They are going to be exercising soon There are healthier options food with high levels of saturated fats E numbers sugars and processed foods can negatively impact on children s mood and behaviour If you are concerned seek the support of a nutritionist Dinner is coming later Explain that respecting rules is a normal part of life You say no in this situation because it keeps them safe from being sick from eating too much

Empowering Parents THE REALITY IS NEITHER CHILDREN WHO GET THEIR OWN WAY ALL THE TIME NOR PARENTS WHO GIVE IN END UP FEELING GOOD ABOUT THE SITUATION High Expectations and Rewards That you expect your children to go with this plan is non negotiable Now ask for their help the family need a reward chart or whatever suits your family can they help Every time they respect the rule they get a star or a point etc When there are 10 points the family get a reward Ask your children what rewards they would like Children love the time and attention of their parents so you may well be pleasantly surprised Make a chart together or have a look at the free downloadable one http inspiredlearning es resources Empowering Parents In order to help them from now on you will Explain what the reasons are for saying no in a calm way Give them a choice if they really are hungry they can have an apple or a banana No fruit NO FOOD Remind them Remember we talked about how we wanted the fighting to stop Implement ignoring their behaviour when an argument is about to happen you are going to walk away When they feel they are getting upset what can they do to control their feelings Giving your child a choice on your terms gives them a feeling they have some control There s no negotiation they can t swap the sandwich for a chocolate bar Positive self talk You can do it You are a great parent who can give your child the tools they need to become an independent adult List 10 things that make you a great parent then the next day 11 then 12 etc Consciously being positive about yourself to yourself makes a huge difference to your own resilience You are not being mean you are enabling protecting and ultimately making you child a far happier and confident adult It may not be easy it might work to start off with and then you need to sit down together and talk The important thing is you can do it It s like Mary Poppins coming to the house we love it You have such a special bond with our children thank you so much Parent Costa del Sol Andrea Robson known as the Costa s kids coach has nearly 20 years of working with children and families She is a highly qualified primary teacher former Head of School and a Certified Coach If you or your child worry about bullying friendships anxiety or self esteem among other issues please get in touch Facebook Inspired Kidz andrea inspiredlearning es 2017 2018 EDITION 55

Empowering Parents by Antonia Behan PARENT COACHING EMPOWER YOUR TEENAGER TO BE SUCCESSFUL Parents Pinboard Parents want their teens to be happy and healthy to love like and believe in themselves to take responsibility for their choices well being finances and careers and to be successful This begins with a secure foundation of love acceptance safety and security How to help your teenager to love like and believe in themselves uild Pride let your teen know when you are proud B of their behaviours and encourage them to reflect on when they feel proud of themselves Sharing your own moments of pride will model positive self appraisal 2 Cultivate Acceptance The pillars of self esteem are built on feeling safe secure and accepted within an empowering relationship this means that you teenager knows they can express anything to you and know that what they say will be accepted without judgement evaluation or criticism This does not give them free reign to be verbally abusive you do not have to accept abuse When you accept your teenager their good and their bad this allows your teenager to accept Him herself too To help develop self acceptance Use positive language Teenagers often internalize what they hear in their environments a teenager told You Can t may begin to tell themselves I can t while You Can soon becomes I Can Create Quality Time Time alone with each child and without disruption this makes them feel valuable Demonstrate self acceptance Be kind to yourself you are worth it Give yourself a break you deserve it Do what makes you happy why would you want to do anything else Forgive your mistakes you are not superwoman man Express how you feel without losing control your feelings are acceptable and matter 1 56 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E 3 Coach your teen to develop positive behaviours You can build a positive relationship that sees your teenager making behaviour changes as a result of changing your own communication style The way we speak can make the difference between a defensive or even rude response and a positive communication that generate a positive outcome eventually Instead of telling your teenager they must do something which tends to create a defensive reaction ask What if type questions This type of question plants seeds of inspiration to motivate your teenager to make positive changes to support their own objectives What if you tidied your room what would be different for you What if your grades improved how might this change your relationships with others What do you think is going to happen if things remain the same When they can see how their own behaviour affects them the conversation shifts from being about what you want them to do to about what will happen to them This encourages motivation to change

Making a Difference BY KAREN KEEFE A Mother s Hope Love and Courage for her Son Leo the Lion Making a Difference My parents had moved to Spain from the Isle of Man 12 years ago I moved to Spain 9 years ago with my Mexican husband We have a 9 year old daughter called Sofia Leo was born full term and a healthy baby When Leo was about 2 years old he was very clumsy falling over etc nobody knows if it could have been the signs of the tumour and what was to be the beginning of the worst 2 years of my life filled with heartbreak grief and entering a world of cancer that I was naive to before and having to make life or death decisions to give Leo a chance to have a life This is Leo s story During the Summer of 2015 Leo was very lethargic vomiting in the mornings without any diarrhoea We went to the hospital and medical centre 8 times over a 2 month period to express our concerns Each time Leo s symptoms were put down to a virus and antibiotics were prescribed Symptoms continued and I demanded a blood test to be done which did not show anything Brain tumours do not show in blood tests At the beginning of September 2015 Leo had some weakness in his right hand He was right handed but was grabbing things with the left hand He would get mad and angry if I asked him to hold things in the right hand We went to the hospital again An x ray was then done to see if a bone had moved out of place Four or five doctors evaluated him who then came to the conclusion that Leo was being lazy Until there was one pediatrician who was not convinced and requested a CT scan This scan revealed a 9 5cm tumour in Leo s left brain He told us Leo would need an operation that same night or the following day Upon arrival to the main hospital the doctors did not see the urgency to operate immediately They told us the following week Leo would have the operation Three days later Leo had a stroke and convulsions which left him paralysed in the right side At that point the doctors had no option but to operate immediately 64 K I D S O N T H E C O S TA F A M I LY G U I D E Leo survived the operation but then contracted sepsis which attacked his lungs and liver He was put on life support and we were advised to switch off the machine Leo continued fighting and the tumour was diagnosed as benign Weeks later another 4 5cm tumour grew but the hospital in Spain refused to operate so we went to Alder Hey in the UK Leo had his second operation and the pathology report concluded that it was an aggressive type of brain cancer called Spnet ETMR They advised us that chemotherapy was intense and survival was low Leo breezed through the chemo sessions and then continued to have 6 months of clear MRI scans I felt relieved Leo had done it He had defied all of the odds overcome all of the obstacles that he had been crossed his path and left the doctors speechless with his strength and fight to have a life that he deserves In December 2016 Leo s scan revealed another tumour We found an immunotherapy trial in Pamplona and travelled there However 6 weeks after he began I felt like something was not right and asked for another MRI scan This scan showed another 2 tumours in Leo s left brain he was kicked off the trial with immediate effect We travelled back to Alder Hey for Leo s fourth brain operation The only

Miracles Are Possible If the tumour returns there are no options left for him at this point Leo is one of the happiest little boys a person can ever meet but he has a long way to go He has been left with Hemiplegia in his right hand side so he does not walk and has loss of speech The doctors have told us due to Leo s age and the brain finding new pathways to perform functions and generate new cells that it is possible for Leo to progress walk again learn again speak again in the future Leo will require intense physio speech therapy and occupational therapy sessions for years People are still continuing to fundraise for Leo s private therapy as well Making a Difference option left was radiation to Leo s brain and I discovered that Proton therapy was the best option to help minimise the latter effects Spain and the UK would not fund this treatment that was only available in the USA We had 3 weeks to raise approximately 150 000 and we managed to do it with the power of raising awareness through social media newspapers and radio Leo completed proton therapy in Oklahoma on the 24th April 2017 as specialised disabled equipment Anyone who who would like to help Leo with his rehabilitation can donate on the website www gofundme com leothelion3 or via paypal to karenlisakeefe hotmail com You can follow Leo s progress on his facebook page www facebook com leothelionsfight I feel that it could be beneficial for nurses and doctors to receive more training into rare types of cancer The Internet is a great resource for information and is how I have been able to investigate the best treatments for Leo I would like to see resources openly available in hospitals where parents have access to Online medical cases reports research different treatments etc to enable them to reach the right decision for their child If something does not feel right with your child then push for answers ask question after question A parent s gut instinct is always the right one and as a parent you know your child the best Never give up even if the odds are stacked against you Miracles are possible 2017 2018 EDITION 65
