     It is difficult

    to explain or

  even just describe

  the ideas of Zen.

  The first 

  problem one

 encounters is due

to the fact that Zen

is not only a

 Buddhist, sect. If it were the case, we

 could content

 ourselves with a

 religious account

 of  Zen as a branch

 of a larger body.

 Zen has to be seen

as a cultural and a 

philosophical

 phenomenom, as it

is a framework for a

vast array of ideas:

metaphysical, 

religious, moral. It

is a way of

interpretating man's

soul and

existence which

regards the

abolition of

previous

misconceptions and

illusions a 

precondition of the

ultimate goal

enlightenment.

This very

requirement makes

formulation about

Zen quite

contradictory. The

layman, especially in

the west, might very

well sense despair in

his attempt to

decipher the

oxymoronic

sentences which

make up the collections of stories,

 anectdotes, and

 sayings in written

material about Zen.

  According to one

Buddhist story,

when one asks 

"where is the moon"

and someone points

with his finger and

says "There it is",

one has to look from

the finger to the

moon, and not remain gazing at the finger

as if it were the moon itself. This applies

to"Mouth Zen" that

is the zen taught by 

talking about zen,

for we have to

remember that zen 

material only points

 to the

experience of

Enlightenment, and is not prescriptive or
