October 2023 We blinked and it was Q4 Time flies when you re having fun and making transformational change while doing so Since our last update the CSI team has been riding high off of the energy of the 2nd Annual Convening and carrying that momentum into a variety of areas including federal Clean Slate Our work on the federal front is on the upswing This summer we held a Congressional Briefing The Clean Slate Act A Fresh Start for Second Chances that brought together interested congressional staff passionate individuals and esteemed panelists to rally behind the significant legislative milestone H R 2930 the Clean Slate Act of 2023 Bill sponsor Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester D DE gave energizing remarks in support of our efforts urging lawmakers to support cosponsor the bill to address the urgent need for reform and its profound impact on individuals families and the American economy Most recently in September CSI joined the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation s Annual Legislative Conference for the second year in a row hosting an exciting policy panel an exclusive reception and a swag filled booth in the conference s exhibit hall The panel discussion highlighted how the Clean Slate Act can break barriers to employment education and housing and included Congresswoman Blunt Rochester MSNBC s Jonathan Capehart and New York State Senator Zellnor Myrie to name a few I also had the honor of serving as a panelist for a conversation hosted by the U S Justice Department s Office of the Pardon Attorney The Case for Second Chances A Conversation About Criminal Justice Collateral Consequences and Clemency during which U S Associate Attorney General Vanita Gupta delivered virtual opening remarks The panel discussion featuring justice impacted advocates and experts was led by U S Pardon Attorney Liz Oyer and addressed the collateral consequences of incarceration while underscoring the importance of our federal solution To keep tabs on the developments with our federal work make sure to bookmark our new website hub https www cleanslateinitiative org federal The above is just a snapshot of the work CSI has been engaged in over the last several months our Annual Report is underway and will provide a comprehensive

THE CLEAN SLATE INITIATIVE HIRING UPDATE New Role Jesse Kelley Becomes CSI s Senior Policy Strategist Our colleague Jesse Kelley has a new role in our organization In this new role Jesse will be responsible for applying her deep expertise of Clean Slate policies to support CSI s overarching policy strategy collaborate on policy analysis with key partners and more Since March 2021 Jesse has worked on our state level campaigns and will continue to closely support that work by analyzing complex state specific statutes and creating policy goals including drafting policies writing educational publications and testifying as a policy expert at state legislative hearings A quick note from Jesse I am excited to engage with policy and partners I am wholeheartedly committed to enhancing precise Clean Slate legislation and fervently advocating for equity within our justice system Together we can be the catalysts for tangible transformation Caitlin Dunklee Campaign Strategist Caitlin has organized and co led movements against the criminalization of BIPOC communities for 19 years Their work in New York Texas and California includes community organizing coalition building and leadership development Caitlin co founded Texas Advocates for Justice a thriving Southern grassroots organization now based at Grassroots Leadership led by directly impacted individuals and families They served as the Director of Organizing for the Transformative In Prison Workgroup TPW where they co led a statewide membership organization composed of 85 diverse community based organizations with a shared vision of decarceration through healing Caitlin believes in the inherent dignity of all people the critical importance of leadership from communities most affected by racism and incarceration and the transformative possibilities that healing collective trauma can generate Read more about Caitlin on our website

THE CLEAN SLATE INITIATIVE HIRING UPDATE Sharlene Sha Shikhmuradova Director of Talent Culture Sharlene brings over 14 years of progressive multidisciplinary HR experience including dedicated experience as a HR Business Partner to executives and senior leaders In her role as CSI s Director of Talent and Culture Sharlene is committed to support the organization most importantly its people in fulfilling CSI s vision of offering second chances as a societal imperative recognizing that everyone should have a fair opportunity to work have a safe home take care of their families and contribute to the community Read more about Sharlene on our website And Starting In November Jason Cooper as Vice President of Programs and Alexandra Williams as Chief of Staff Looking Ahead There will be no board meeting in December as our Advisory Board will be coming to a close Please accept our holiday gift of receiving time back
