As springtime and warmer weather is in sight, I bet your pup cant wait to get outside for longer walks again! Re-
member to bring along a plastic bag though. Aside from being a good neighbor, here is a compelling argument why
its important to pick up the poo:
Just because you dont see parasites in your dogs stool, doesnt mean they arent
there. Some intestinal parasites such as giardia and coccidia can only be seen under
a microscope. Other parasites may live within your pets intestines shedding infec-
tious eggs into the stool, which again are only visible under the microscope. Thats
why most vets recommend regular stool testing to check for these parasites.
Infectious stool, when left in the environment, can cause parasites in other pets and
may even contaminate drinking water and infect people. It is important to wash your
hands well after handling pets stool to avoid contracting any of these parasites
If your dog is a gourmet and enjoys fecal snacks of his own or others making, he has a high risk of becoming in-
fected with an intestinal parasite. The medical term for this condition is coprophagia. These pets can be particularly
difficult to treat, because they can become reinfected from eating their own stool. The only solution to this problem
aside from a visit to your vet is picking up the poo.
I often am asked about cats that live only inside. How can they be exposed to these parasites and why does their
stool need to be regularly tested by a vet? Studies have shown 15% of plant potting soil contains hookworm or
roundworm eggs, or both. Cats can also contract tapeworm from eating infected fleas. But how could my cat possi-
bly contract fleas when he never goes outside??
Indulge me in a little scenario: You swing by the pet store to pick up cat food and they
have some adorable cats available for adoption. You linger by the cage a moment wish-
ing those sweet kitties would find their forever homes. A flea from one of the cages
hitches a ride on your pant leg back to your house. Fuzzy Purrbottom Kitty Snuggles
greets you at the door, very excited that you brought home his favorite tasty treats. (How
they can detect that youve been at the pet store from the other side of the house is an
amazing evolutionary adaption of smell!) FP Kitty Snuggles rubs up against your leg, the
pesky flea bites him, and he immediately turns to chew the spot where he was just bitten.
That easily the flea has been ingested and tapeworm contracted.
Moral of the story - pick up the poo, wash your hands after handling the poo, and let your vet test the poo.
