From the PresidentAaron BreitenbachMuch To Be Thankful ForOf course, I’m going to write a column listing some ofmy many blessings during the month of Thanksgiving. It’s not that I expect my list to be particularly unique orinspirational, but sometimes the columns just writethemselves. Sorry to take the luster off the processfolks, but I’ve only got so much creative writing in me. Before I lose you in my list of thank yous, I encourageyou to pause and reflect on your own blessings. Anxiety, depression, and envy are always hoping to ensnareeach of us in isolation, stress, and despair. Right now, take a minute or two. Set a timer if you have to….,seriously. Give yourself this time to quietly consideryour achievements, the lessons learned fromdisappointments, and those who have loved you orsupported what and where you are. As Joni tells thekids, you can’t decide what will happen in your life, butyou can decide whether to be grateful and positive.Smart lady. Speaking of which, I must start my list by thanking Godfor bringing Joni Franklin into my life. Our relationshipbegan on a dance floor at the tail end of a trolley trek,so it’s clear the Holy Spirit is at work at all times in allplaces. We have been together 20 years as of this Fall, and I am still thankful Sal Intagliata convinced me topersevere and ask Joni out after her friends hadwhisked her away from the club that night. I’m alsothankful I had the WBA directory to look up Joni’snumber. She was out of my league then, and she still is. I am thankful for our two beautiful, thoughtful children,Gabe and Lulu. They remind me that I am somethingmore than a Deputy District Attorney or lawyer. I am adad, mentor, and friend. When my mind is caught up inthe cases and issues of my day, they remind me of thethings that really matter: fantasy football and whateverStar Wars series is streaming on Disney+. I am fortunateto have been raised by caring parents andgrandparents, and I hope I am continuing their traditionof selfless love. I am thankful to be an American. I know our country hasits issues, but there’s a reason multitudes of people stillrisk their lives to come here. Setting the logistics ofimmigration aside, I hope we all recognize thetestament that immigrants offer to the blessing ofcitizenship in this country. We are free to speak ourminds, choose our faith, and provide for our familiesaccording to our individual skills and ingenuity. I amfortunate to be part of a profession that defends thoserights and opportunities for others. I am thankful for Pat Mahomes, Salvador Perez, and BillSelf. Those are all pretty self-explanatory. I am thankful to Marc Bennett and my colleagues at theDistrict Attorney’s Office for their example of publicservice. I’ve previously shared my pride in my vocation, but I have been particularly blessed to learn from thosewho came before me and to be a part of such acommitted, professional, and fun work group. I knowprosecutors from across Kansas, but this group is thebest around.I am thankful to the WBA for electing me to serve asyour president. I’ve been involved with a fewcommittees over the years, but I really had noappreciation for the diversity in skills and service ourmembership possess. Now that I get the “opportunity”to attend all of our committee meetings, I am evenmore confident that participation in our committees is atremendous asset to our individual members andbroader legal community. On the off chance you’re still reading this, I want tothank you. By joining the WBA, you have made a choiceto be more than a lawyer who happens to practice inWichita. You have chosen to be a part of a legalcommunity with a tradition of collegiality, legaleducation, and ethical service to our clients. There areother activities to which you could give your money andtime, but you have chosen the WBA. I am sincerelythankful for it. BAR-0-METER - NOV 2022 Page 3

BAR-0-METER - NOV 2022 Page 4A note from the co-editor – Happy Fall Y’all! I hope everyone is enjoying the beautifulweather and getting out and about more. The Bar-o-Meter(the BOM in our world – pun intended) has seen somechanges over the last few years. We have cut back on printissues, due to budgetary and resource issues. We have seena few editors come and go. And we handle our digital issuesin-house now. We hope you continue to read the Bar-o-Meter and stay connected with your fellow WBA members. Iam the current co-editor. I practice at Martin Pringle. Priorto that, I was with the DA’s office for 15 years. I have servedon the committee off and on since 2005. In early 2021,Marcia Wood asked me to join her as the new co-editors ofthe Bar-o-Meter. We plan to continue with alternating co-editors to ease the burden of producing a monthlypublication and create consistency for the publication.Marcia took the lead for the 2021-2022 year and thenpassed the torch to me and a new co-editor. I am pleased toannounce that Megan Townsley (Fleeson Gooing) hasagreed to help as co-editor through 2024! She will belooking for her co-editor in the Spring of 2023, so don’tdodge her phone calls. We are always looking for articleideas, gossip for Gabby Tattler, or new committeemembers. We appreciate those that contribute to the Bar-o-Meter and we welcome future contributions. I was born and raised in Wichita, Kansas, and knew from a very early age that I wanted to be a lawyer. Myfriends and family would tell you that this career choice was driven by the fact that I like to argue but I wouldobviously deny such allegations. My family has always been supportive of this decision and encouraged me toseek opportunities by which I could grow and learn from others in the field. This is what lead me to apply toNortheast Magnet High School in 2010. Northeast has three programs that incoming freshmen can choosefrom, depending on their interests—art, science, law, and public service. I, of course, chose to enroll in the lawand public service program. I had amazing teachers and if you attended Northeast Magnet, you know familiarnames such as Tom Kiernan, Cheryl Witt, and Robin Kluge. These teachers knew of my interest to pursue acareer in law and persuaded me to apply to the Grow Your Own Lawyer Program. I participated in the Grow Your Own Lawyer Program in the Spring of 2013. Although I was interested in thelegal field, I was not exposed to legal careers outside of the classroom. I did not know of anyone who hadgone to law school, much less an attorney I could go to for questions or guidance. The only lawyer I knew atthe time was my teacher, Robin Kluge. Judge Kellie Hogan was chair of the program in the Spring of 2013 andwas invested in meeting with each student and inquiring about what we’d like to get out of the program. Moststudents said they wanted to go to law school and wanted to interact with lawyers from a wide array ofpractice areas. The Grow Your Own Lawyer Program is unique in that it exposes students to a wide variety oflegal careers with a variety of perspectives and experiences. Our semester included tours of the Sedgwick County Jail, the Federal Courthouse, Washburn Law School, KULaw School, Brown v BOE Museum, and networking events that included several panels of attorneys. Mypersonal favorite experience included the visit to the Federal Courthouse. We toured the courtrooms—whichare still as beautiful as they were in 2013—as well as toured the judges' chambers and were able to sit in on ahearing. After the hearing, we were introduced to everyone and their role in the courthouse—judge, deputy, clerk, attorneys, etc. I also enjoyed the various panels of attorneys from different practice areas. It gave methe opportunity to ask all the questions, gave us a day-to-day schedule of what being an attorney is like, andwe were able to connect with the attorneys who we could reach out to if we had any questions. Grow Your Own LawyerBy Marisol GarciaBAR-0-METER - NOV 2022 Page 14Through the Grow Your Own Lawyer program, I had theopportunity to connect with lawyers, who are now mycolleagues and with whom I kept in touch with over theyears. Fast forward to the present and almost ten yearsafter completing the program, I am a second-yearassociate at Martin Pringle. I am an active member ofthe WBA’s Diversity Committee and will co-chair theGrow Your Own Lawyer Program in the Spring of 2023,alongside Kat Rodriguez. To say that the Grow YourOwn Lawyer program and the relationships I builtsolidified my decision to go to law school would be anunderstatement. The program was instrumental in mydecision to come back and practice in Wichita.
