The meforshim wonder: if Hashem’s intention was for Yaakov to receive these brochos, why was it necessary that it happen in such a deceptive manner? Rav Pam ל״צז suggests the following: Yaakov had to overcome many challenges and crises throughout his lifetime. Shortly after fleeing his parents’ home, he was attacked by Eliphaz who robbed him of his money. Following that, he was forced to deal with the deceitful Lavan for twenty years. When he finally began his journey back to Eretz Canaan, he was confronted with the danger of his brother Eisav’s hatred. He arrived in Eretz Canaan to be met with the challenge of Rachel’s death and Dina’s abduction. He thought he would experience a measure of tranquility after that, but he was instead presented with the anguish of Yosef’s disappearance. How was Yaakov able to overcome all these different nisyonos and constant tzaros? The medrash in ז:חס תישארב explains that Yaakov’s secret source of strength to overcome all his challenges was rooted in the knowledge that should he fail, give up, or lose hope he will forfeit all the energy invested by his mother to obtain those brachos. Rivka risked everything she had so that Yaakov would be the recipient, including being willing to bear anything negative that Yitzchak would possibly say should he discover the subterfuge. This gave Yaakov constant chizuk to overcome his challenges and develop into the תובאה ריחב. Life presents many challenges which can be very overwhelming at times. Let us remember the tremendous energy and kochos invested within us by our ancestors, parents, and teachers, and strive to succeed and reach our potential. How can we possibly disappoint them? ! תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs We welcome Miss Adena Malka Yudkowsky as our new PreK2 Morah and girls’ General Studies Support.
