Aniin Boozhoo, Wachey, I hope everyone enjoyed the summer months. Here at the North Bay Indigenous FriendshipCentre (NBIFC), we were in full force, with numerous activities and events that kept our Centrebuzzing with energy and community spirit.Throughout the summer, the Centre hosted a variety of programs and activities that were well-attended by our community members. These activities aim to bring people together, celebrateour culture, and provide opportunities for learning, connection, and enjoyment. Whether throughcultural events, casual gatherings, or recreational outings, we made the most of the season.TRC Day at the waterfront with our partners, the Indigenous Hub and the Anishinaabek Nation, was a heartwarming event with over 500 people in attendance, and the gathering afterwards waslovely. We are also so grateful to everyone who participated, donated and supported our first first-evergolf tournament, it was a great success! As we transition into the cooler months and the leaves have finished their work for the year, weprepare for the time of visiting and sharing with each other. This time of year holds a special placein our hearts as we come together to reflect, reconnect, and celebrate the sense of communitythat is at the core of NBIFC’s mission. The North Bay Indigenous Friendship Centre has a robust lineup of events planned for theupcoming months. These activities are designed to keep you engaged and connected throughoutthe winter. From cultural gatherings to recreational events, we aim to provide opportunities for allto enjoy, grow, and share. We encourage everyone to regularly check our website for updates and details on the eventsplanned. We are confident that these activities will help to keep the winter months vibrant andfulfilling for our community members. As always, we look forward to seeing you at your Centre and sharing in the upcoming celebrationsand events. Your participation is what makes this community strong and vibrant.Miigwetch!Kathy FortinKathy FortinExecutive DirectorThe North Bay Indigenous Friendship CentreExecutive Directors Message

National Day of National Day of Truth & Reconciliation Truth & Reconciliation Our first collaborative Orange Shirt Dayevent day was a success thanks to everyonewho showed up & supported the event. Thisis the first time that the North BayIndigenous Hub, the NBIFC and theAnishinabek Nation have worked together tocreate a meaningful event for our people, andthe community at large. Overall it was a greatsuccess and we look forward to planningmore events like this! However, the most powerful words of the day came from JudyCouchie, a residential school survivor who is committed to not onlyhelping people understand the effects on our people, but is alsocommitted to helping create a healing path forward for everyone. Her resilience is truly inspiring. The songs and drumming, providedby our youth drum group from Nbiising Secondary School, honoured our Residential School survivors and their families asthey began a march down Memorial Drive. Afterwards attendees were welcomed at the Indigenous Hub fora BBQ lunch, activities, and to check out information booths, butmost importantly, spend time together as a community.

On October 1, 2024, three residents celebratedtheir completion of the Redpath AddictionsTreatment Program. This program is anIndigenous-based program that supports eachindividual’s recovery process. The Redpath programs were developed andimplemented in penitentiaries within Ontario – Suswin VillageCelebrates ThreeGraduates from theRedpath Program with the sole goal and purpose of filling a large gap that was identified – supporting individuals inaddressing their traumas, recognizing their coping skills and building skills that support harmonyin our four rooms: spiritual, psychological, emotional and physical. Some of the topics coveredinclude what clutters our four rooms, loss of identity, abandonment, patterns, letting go andresponsibilities. Oh, and we even get to watch the movie Smoke Signals which all participantsthoroughly enjoy while reflecting on their lives-past, present and future. One graduate highlighted that this program was extremely helpful as it supported him inidentifying triggers, patterns, and motivators to continue to remain walking his journey in a goodway. Another graduate identified that it definitely helped him with some traumas, coping skillsand was definitely an eye opener. He says he would recommend this for anyone who wants tounderstand their coping skills and their traumas. As a licensed facilitator of both the Redpath Addictions Treatment Program and the RedpathLiving Without Violence program, I have found beauty in the Redpath programs as they areengaging, the guidance is purely in introducing the material and asking questions with sincerecuriosity to help participants find the answers within themselves. We are most definitely theexperts on ourselves and merely need support and validation-which Redpath gives.Kerry HamiltonSuswin Village
