WHAT S MAGIC ABOUT THE MAGIC VALLEY Twin Falls Zoological Center is Open The Twin Falls Zoo has been a buzz in town for a few years and we are so excited that it is finally open We were able to visit a few weeks ago and see everything for ourselves We met the general manager Rachael Dowding who gave us a tour of the facility We were so impressed We brought our kids with us so they could enjoy the animals and reptiles alongside us We were greeted by a porcupine in the first exhibit She was friendly and showed off her quills We even got to touch some of the quills that she had shed Many displays at the zoo are hands on Any animal exhibit that has an open top means that kids can touch the animals inside that display Usually there is at least one worker walking around with an animal that kids can touch and hold The zoo has a wide selection of animals including snakes tortoises fish lizards gators a chinchilla a skunk a porcupine parakeets koi turtles eels and more One of the highlights for our kids was the pedicure fish that nibble on your hands when you put them into the tank The zoo additionally provides a rescue initiative allowing visitors to adopt animals in need of a new home Rachel s brother Josh Dowding is the executive director and was the driving force behind opening the zoo They grew up around a lot of reptiles and eventually Josh owned his own big tortoise out in Buhl He was asked to take in and care for someone s iguana and after a while word got out and strangers were asking to come see all of the animals They figured having a public place to see so many of them would be a better way to share their animals with the community Thus the idea of the Twin Falls Zoological Center was born Julie Vasquez and Shawnee Burt Southern Idaho Kids Now Accepting New Piano Students Bright Futures MV Piano Lessons In Twin Falls Bright Futures 1 4 Page Vertical Fun Engaging Lessons Unlimited Makeup Lessons Help Your Child Build Confidence Contact for a free intro piano lesson or 30 off your first month tuition 208 948 2824 info brightfuturesmv com brightfuturesmv com Smart Mouth 1 4 Page Vertical 4 www southernidahokids com

HEALTH WELLNESS sponsored by HEALTHYHABITS Helping Children Gain a Sense of Purpose Recent reports have shown a decline in mental health across the US especially since the COVID 19 pandemic A sense of worthlessness among children and adolescents is also becoming much more common Prioritizing mental health practices in young children can help decrease the risk of developing anxiety or depression while instilling a sense of purpose Here are some ideas to nurture your child s selfworth Assign age appropriate tasks and express your gratitude Even 2 year olds can do some simple chores and tasks As they progress through more difficult tasks their self esteem will build as this shows your confidence in their abilities Try to frame tasks as something you need your child to help with Feeling needed and important to the family is important for everyone If the task is just something they have to do it will increase their reluctance Thank your children for what they do frequently and point out how they can have a positive impact on the world Set Goals For children who are old enough worthwhile goals can also help orient them to their purpose Try to focus on goals of being or becoming not on achieving milestones or tasks Studies have shown goals that include to be or become provide a deeper and longer lasting sense of fulfillment because they provide the opportunity for continuous effort and rewarding progress For example the goal should focus on being a great big brother rather than go a week without teasing my sister Another example would focus on being a great student rather than achieve a specific grade or complete all homework Avoid goals that rely on comparisons to others For example the goal should focus on be the best athlete they can rather than being the best on the team It is important to remember it takes time and action to build self worth These feelings will grow for children with adults providing appropriate agespecific goals expressing gratitude emphasizing a child s purpose and avoiding comparisons Dr Andrew Monson DO St Luke s Pediatrician Sponsored by 14 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m

PRINCIPAL OF THE MONTH Todd Hale Principal Gem Prep Twin Falls 12 Years in Education What is your favorite part about being a principal I love seeing the lightbulb go off when kids get concepts When this happens the energy and excitement is tangible Something your students might not know about you My students would probably never guess that I ve flown an airplane A word of advice Never give up In school and in life you will face challenges You get to choose if those challenges will tear you down or build you up Nominated by Annalyse Hale He is the best principal I know and he is so caring to every student and staff member He wants to see everybody succeed in life so he helps the kids do just that He helps make sure that everybody s happy and on track and most importantly he makes sure that everybody is doing okay The Teacher of the Month will receive a Sodamix gift card and a cookie party for their class To nominate a teacher visit www southernidahokids com nominate your teacher xxx Buy a 24 oz drink Sponsor gPecatrgeaeasmcofoorpFoRfEicEe HorizontalExpires November 30 2023 1553 Washington St North Suite 100 Twin Falls 208 613 1771 16 w w w s o u t h e r n i d a h o k i d s c o m
