BulletinJuly 2020• 5DDeeaarr RReeaaddeerrssTwo things to tell you, as we graduallycome out of hibernation. The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! The second thing, something you will have alreadynoticed – the July edition of the Bulletin is muchsmaller than usual. There are a couple of reasons forthis, obviously while we have been in lockdown, wehave not been attending any conferences, meetings, seminars orworkshops in person, these have all been postponed or pushed intovirtual meetings. Most of which have been done at very short notice – socurrently there is nothing much to report. Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. Our August edition will also be small – but Iguarantee our September edition will be back to normal!Back with this edition, we do have some articles of interest to you – let’sstart with MySociety – the IAT membership database. Read pages 8-11 foran explanation of how this works and how you can use it. This is ofinterest to us all, but especially so to those of us who are RAnTechs – wecan use the database to track and keep records of our CPD.Elsewhere, we have AS-ET news, which includes information on the essaycompetition – prize a trip to Congress 2021. See page 16 to see if you areeligible – even if you are not, please pass the information on to thosewho are.Make sure you take care and …KKeeeepp RReeaaddiinngg!!CCaarroolleePoverty IAT LAUNCHES EQUALITY AND DIVERSITY GenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAME BUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 10/7/20 10:01 Page 5BulletinNovember 2022 • 5 The clocks have gone back, the days shorter and the air is crisper. I love this time of the year and another thing that I love is the resurgence of in-person meetings. This month we are covering two such events. The fi rst I want to draw your attention to is FELASA. We have a report from IAT Council members who were there for a variety of reasons – discussing education strategies and ways to reduce severe suffering, as well as manning the EFAT stand. Read the report on pages 17 – 28. There were almost twice the number of delegates as usual, which I interpret as our need to meet in person being strong. The second article is the American AAALAC International Fellowship winner’s report. Kelly Patterson originally won the award in 2020 but unfortunately due to the pandemic was only able to travel to the UK in 2022, see pages 29 – 33. She had a great time and as well as visiting various institutions all working on a wide variety of both species and scientifi c projects, she also got to see the UAR offi ces. She fi tted in some siteseeing and attended Congress 2022. She found it memorable and at the end of her report she encourages people to apply for the Fellowship and for those eligible, I would second that.Of course, now we have begun the journey towards Congress 2023 (see pages 9, 15 and 28) and we should be thinking of how we can contribute to it. I know, I am always mentioning it – but any conference is not much without the support of its delegates. If Congress feels too far away and you want to participate in something more immediate, have a look at pages 14-15 about two separate surveys to take part in. One is about monitoring the behaviour of rodents in their home cage and the other is about the behaviour of people handling mice. All sounds very interesting. Anyway, participate andKeep Reading!CaroleAllentown_NexGenMAX_Ad_IAT_Bulletin_v4 05/23/22IAT Bulletin- Europe 05-2022◼Automatically increases your housing density by up to 20% using the same space ◼Accommodates both NexGen reusable and EasyCage™disposable housing for your convenience◼Compatible with WiVarium Plus™, Wi-Com Sensus™, Sentinel™ EAD®, Sentinel2™, and our other Facility Support Solutions NexGen™MAX™High Density Rodent HousingSentinel is a trademark of Allentown, LLC. BulletinNovember 2022 • 7213th Meeting of the Council of the Institute of Animal Technology Held by Zoom on Wednesday 21st September 2022 at 13.00 hoursCouncil was very pleased to welcome Mark Prescott from the NC3Rs Animal Welfare group to the meeting and he provided an update on their activities. They are keen to continue their partnership with the IAT and to support Animal Technicians around the 3Rs. The main focus of their work is currently, dissemination of the output from existing projects, along with some new projects. They will start to scope a software tool to help identify humane end points for studies and further details will be circulated once they are available. The NC3Rs are looking to hold a joint symposium, aimed at junior technicians and the IAT would be very happy to be involved in this. They will also continue to offer workshops at IAT Congress and Branch events. The NC3Rs are considering holding a webinar on the AWERB report and any recommendations arising from it, as well as fact sheets to accompany the webinar. Again, information will be made available as it is released.Introduction to Laboratory Animal Science Technology and Welfare (ILASTW)The IAT has been approached by the European Commission to produce the European version of the ILASTW, see page 44. As ILASTW will be translated into all 28 EU Member States’ offi cial languages, it will be regarded as a standalone publication and will be freely available both online and in hard copy. Funding is available for this project and there will be no fi nancial commitment required from the IAT.March:IATB NEW 11/7/20 06:53 Page 14IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 7IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 7 07/11/2022 11:3107/11/2022 11:31

Another reminder that we are heading towards the end of 2022 are the call for papers and posters that again appear in this Bulletin as well as on the IAT website. For those of you with ideas for a poster but with no idea on how to start putting one together, there is a link on the ‘call for posters’ page on the website to an article about this in the August ATW. Please take a look, its not as diffi cult as you may think and if you still need help then contact your BLC member or another Branch Committee member who can assist. A Council member will also be able to help. Let’s make 2023 a bumper year for posters!Following on from this and to help with improving communication to your BLC member and Branch Committees, the group is looking to expand on ‘points of contact’ within facilities in each Branch. These people will pass IAT information to technicians in their workplace and also any queries upwards, to reach Council if required. This is another way for passing on information within Branches, ensuring it does reach everyone. Bulletin14 • November 2022 SurveysFarhana Chowdhury asks –“Do you work with mice? If the answer is yes, this study is for you! This project aims to improve welfare by understanding the habits of their human handlers. This survey study will explore your current mouse handling habits and your perceptions of the workplace culture. Given that they are the most widely used species in biomedical research, this project has the potential to improve the quality of life for mice used in research in the future. To be eligible to take part, you must have a role where you work with mice, whether it be in a research capacity or technical role (for example, PIs, PGRs, RAs, technicians, vets). Here is a link to the study – https://nclpsych.eu.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9Sv9YK1DbKMDhYyThe deadline for completion is the 4th December. It will take 10-15 minutes to complete, and your responses will be anonymous. It has received ethical approval (Red: 24916/2022). If you have any questions, please feel free to email Farhana (f.chowdhury3@newcastle.ac.uk). Thank you!”Nicky Gent asks – As members of the COST TEATIME Home Monitoring Action Team, we have put together a survey to gather a baseline of what is happening in the industry with respect to home cage monitoring (HCM). This will also give you an opportunity to sign up to our network and be part of this growing community. The purpose of this survey is to assess the unique opportunities for HCM in automatically recording 24/7 data and analysing undisturbed behaviours and physiology in rodents.IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 14IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 14 07/11/2022 11:3107/11/2022 11:31

Glyn updated the Board on our mission to try and resurrect EFAT to give European (using that term loosely, more in Eurovision contest terms!) Animal Technicians more of a platform for communication and networking, as the amount of support currently appears to be very erratic between countries. Sunday: Tina, Adrian and I arrived about 12.00am and we met with Robin and Zoe – just in from their honeymoon in Dominican Republic! Many congratulations to them. Adrian then travelled onwards into rural Provence by bus! The rest of us went to Marseille by Uber, with alarmingly busy traffic for a Sunday afternoon. We found the hotel in a part of Marseille where local people live – Blancarde. The hotel was quite comfortable and helpfully close to various forms of public transport – with which we would become well acquainted with the aid of Robin. He was an absolute star throughout the visit, helping tutor us in how to use the tram, Metro and bus systems with multi-journey tickets, all at such good value, 2 Sunday: Tina, Adrian and I arrived about 12.00 and we met with Robin & Zoe - just in from their honeymoon in Dominican Republic! This was about how we – IAT Education managed to find ways to continue with the end point assessment of students needing to complete their Apprenticeship during a global pandemic! Our presentation – chaired by Linda, introduced by Steven and then delivered by Tina and me, was well attended by around 70 people. Contact details were captured and follow-up meetings are being arranged. Again, it was clear that there is wide variance in the provision of accredited training for animal technicians - some countries have nothing, only basic in-house training in the tasks of husbandry provision but with none of the science behind it all. It reminded me of how it was in the bad old days of the ‘Brown coat and wellies’ here in the UK – with low paid staff, under-appreciated and not respected for their skills and knowledge. This was why the IAT was established, to educate Animal Technicians so they could become the professionals they are now, with a fully accredited education provision, from Levels 2-6 (undergraduate degree level). It was sobering to learn that some European countries are still at this archaic level of training for their animal-care staff. We want to help empower the animal-care staff to become trained and educated on accredited courses – which the IAT has ready, to be rolled-out, only requiring amendment to reflect the laws of individual countries, but otherwise ready to press ‘Go’. By way of contrast - some countries have extremely comprehensive training – which if anything is too comprehensive. It is uncommon for animal-care staff to work with species other than mice and fish, so why have them spend months studying full-time in the care of non-human primates and farm animals? Instead, they would prefer the ‘Pick and Mix’ species approach, which the IAT education system permits. So different countries were interested in our education systems, coming from both extremes of the spectrum. Rewind to the end of 2019 when I received the call from the Chair of the AAALAC International Fellowship selection committee informing me that I had been chosen as the USA 2020 Fellow. I was so excited; I think I pinched myself daily to ask if this was really happening! Fast forward to March 2020, the week I was supposed to leave for England. There was complete fear and uncertainty in the world – COVID-19 hit and everything was about to change. Within 5 days of getting on the plane to begin my Fellowship, the decision was collectively made to postpone. I was devastated to say the least but the AAALAC International staff came through and assured me they would make it right, thank you, Dr Bayne!March 2022 – my fellowship finally begins! I took the red eye out of Newark, New Jersey and arrived at London, Heathrow early the next morning. I experienced a minor hiccup in connecting with my driver since my flight had been delayed but I finally arrived at my hotel in London early afternoon. I went for a walk, hopped the train and located The London Eye (see below). This amazing 443ft wheel is located on the South Bank of the River Thames and attracts more than 3 million tourists per year!IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 29IAT BULLETIN NOV22.indd 29 07/11/2022 11:3107/11/2022 11:31

Bulletin30 • November 2022 Day 1 was a simple walk down the street to The Francis Crick Institute. The building is an engineering marvel and quite stunning inside and out. Noteworthy, the Institute was officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in November 2016 and was fully functional in early 2017. Upon meeting my host for the day, I learned many different aspects of conducting biomedical research in the UK versus the USA. The NACWO (Named Animal Care and Welfare Officer) is the responsible individual that oversees husbandry and the care and welfare of the research animals. The UK has some of the strictest animal research regulations in the world and is guided by the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act of 1986. Research on great apes (orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos) was banned in 1986 and utilising animals for cosmetics or their ingredients was banned in 1998. Additionally, three licenses must be granted by the government’s Home Office before any animal research can take place. They are as follows:– Personal licence – for the individual doing the experiment.– Project licence – for each experiment. – Establishment license – for the institution undertaking the experiment. Licenses are granted for medical, veterinary, scientific and environmental research. BulletinNovember 2022 • 31 The real fun began later that evening when I had to begin travelling around the capital via the Tube or subway as we refer to it in the USA. After leaving London, I was on a train to Grateley when I found the taxi listed in my itinerary was no longer available. Thankfully, a great friend and colleague messaged me and assisted in locating an operational taxi service and I continued to Amesbury, Wiltshire where I checked in at an incredibly quaint guest house for the evening. The customer service there was amazing! Fairlawn Guest House, if you ever find yourself requiring lodging in the area. Day 3 began by taking a taxi to Porton Down to visit the Centre for Macaques and being dropped off at the wrong building. Have no fear, my amazing host came to the rescue and picked me up and escorted me to the highly secured (military) check-in point. Upon check-in they had me listed as British citizenship which could have been a huge problem but I was able to be cleared with the assistance of my host. The Centre for Macaques was so impressive. All the animals live in very large runs with exposure to natural sunlight so the monkeys could experience dusk and dawn. The facility had a large, dedicated kitchen where staff created yummy enrichment treats for the animals. They also had a mini ‘shop’ where staff were continuously creating and building physical enrichment perches and tunnels for the animals to enjoy. The Centre serves as an important breeding facility and provides animals for the research facilities throughout England. Onward to the next couple of days spent at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology and the University of Cambridge, Department of Physiology, Neuroscience and Development. I participated in discussions about team building and staff development and received a tour of their facilities. I was quite impressed by their aging primate studies and how people-oriented these amazing primates were upon my arrival to the study area. I was also amazed with the University of Cambridge Zebrafish facility with state-of-the-art automated units. The facility housed thousands of fish and had several robots feeding the fish. During my stay in Cambridge, I took in the sites of many historic buildings and had dinner one evening with my new friends at The Eagle. This famous pub is where Francis Crick interrupted patrons’ lunch on February 28, 1953 to announce that he and James Watson had “discovered the secret of life.” That “secret” was their proposal for the structure of DNA. It was a great evening hearing about local history and I had to take a photo of the famous plaque placed for Watson and Crick. At the end of my fi rst week, I chose to spend my weekend in London and met a friend for lunch and take in more sights such as Buckingham Palace, do some shopping at Covent Garden and visit the famous Tower Bridge. BulletinNovember 2022 • 33 Week two began with a visit to Understanding Animal Research (UAR), a non-profit organisation that explains why animals are used in medical and scientific research. This visit was one of the highlights of my trip, as this is an area I am passionate about in the USA and goes hand-in-hand with outreach and educating the public on the importance of biomedical research. After a quick stop at the world-famous King’s College London, I was off for a 3-hour train ride north to Harrogate for the IAT Congress. This meeting was much like our National AALAS meeting and opened with an amazing vendor welcoming night and trivia quiz. During Congress, I gave a brief presentation about my 30-year career in the field of Laboratory Animal Science. The Congress was filled with engaging scientific presentations and poster exhibits. Last stop was LabCorp, Harrogate. Since I am a current employee, it was the perfect way to end my incredible two weeks in the UK! It was great to see a sister site and tour the facility and meet colleagues that I had only previously ‘met’ via Microsoft Teams meetings. In closing, I would like to say no words can come close to expressing my sincere gratitude for being awarded this Fellowship. One USA fellow I spoke to shortly before leaving for my trip mentioned it was “life-changing”. I wholeheartedly agree. I would go back and do it again if I could but instead, I am using my experience to engage colleagues and encourage them to apply for this once in a lifetime opportunity. Bulletin40 • November 2022 It’s OK … NOT TO BE OKAY …Let’s Talk about ... Health and WellbeingTo continue the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Let’s Talk series, we are focussing on general health and wellbeing. Animal Technologists devote their careers to looking after animals used in medical research and the welfare of their animals is of paramount importance. Current quality Culture of Care policies centre around providing the best welfare to ensure laboratory animals have the best possible life, whilst contributing to a better understanding of some of the world’s major diseases.Whilst putting so much care and attention into their animals, it is quite easy to forget an important element of Culture of Care is the health and wellbeing of the Animal Technologists involved. You can only afford excellent care and compassion if you are well within yourself. The role of the Animal Technologist leads to a roller coaster of emotions and it is important to keep on top of these emotions to avoid emotional burn out. There has been considerable previous work conducted within the UK to establish parity of esteem between physical and mental health (Morton & O’Reilly, 2019, Mitchell et al 2017). Current mental health policies aim to improve mental health and wellbeing, prevent the onset of mental and emotional distress and increase resilience. The nature of the relationship between physical and mental health is interlinked with mental health influencing physical health and vice versa. Good health and wellbeing are important in ensuring that all Animal Technologists are able to give the best form of themselves to their animals and ensure compliance to standards of Animal Welfare as practiced within the UK. As identified in previous articles, we have discussed that It’s OK … not to be OKAY and if your health and wellbeing are being affected there are steps you can take. The five step approach is well documented (https://www.nhs.uk/mental-health/self-help/guides-tools-and-activities/five-steps-to-mental-wellbeing/), and how can we embrace this within our industry?1. Connect with colleagues. Good relationships are important for your mental wellbeing. They can:- Help you build a sense of belonging and self-worth.- Give you an opportunity to share positive experiences and talk about the not so positive/challenging aspects of the Animal Technologist’s role.- Provide emotional support and accept support from others. The best people who understand what animal techs experience, are other Animal Technicians. Use them for support.- Try to set some time aside during the day to ensure you connect with others, at lunch or a tea break. - Try talking about issues outside of the workplace if it is a tough day.- See family or friends after work to switch off. If this is not possible use technology such as Teams, Zoom or FaceTime where you can see the person.- Use the journey home for reflection. 2. Be Active- Try to carry out some physical activity following a day at work which is important for physical and mental wellbeing.- Try exercise such as cycling, walking, swimming, running, going to the gym maybe with a friend. This will help to refocus your mind.Let’s Talk about ... Health and Wellbeingwww.iat.org.uk3. Learn new skills- This is vitally important within a role that may be repetitive at times and it is easy for your mind to wander. Learning new skills will ensure your mind is focussed on the task ahead. This will also help you with a sense of achievement and can be a focus point. This could also be extended to home life too, try cooking something new or adventurous, take up a new hobby or learn a new language. Just find activities that you enjoy and are not pressured to do.4. Supporting others- If you are feeling like things are starting to get on top of you, remember you are not alone. The feelings you are having are not unique and others before you and after you will feel the same, this is the emotion of caring. Reach out to others, this will improve your mental wellbeing, as research suggests that the act of giving and kindness will improve your wellbeing by creating positive feelings and a sense of reward, also giving you a feeling of purpose. Do not underestimate how much reaching out to a colleague and offering support can help not just them but you also. Being that ear that your colleague may need, helps so much and you never know that maybe a shared experience could help.5. Pay attention to the present (Mindfulness)- In the throes of a busy and hectic schedule it can be quite easy to forget to pay attention to your own thoughts, feelings and your body. This awareness of your mind and body is commonly termed Mindfulness. Mindfulness has the potential to reduce depressive thoughts, increase emotional regulation, reduce anxiety and stress, improve memory, improve cognitive ability and lead to better physical health (https://www.verywellmind.com/the-benefits-of-mindfulness-5205137) https://neweconomics.org/2011/07/five-ways-well-new-applications-new-ways-thinkingWhat to do if you feel you are not copingIt is important to seek help if you feel that things are getting on top of you. Please look at your employer’s policies on health and wellbeing and see what support is in place. These constraints on rat behaviour can negatively impact on their physical and psychological health, leading to unhealthy animals and potentially unreliable data.
