The first thing to say,we are now back in printed form, so I do hope youare now returning back to a more structured way ofworking and reading this in the tea room! Additionally, because of theunscheduled changes to our lives, the Bulletin has begun to get verybehind in our print schedule, which we now need to get back as wereturn to printed format. We have some diverse news for you this month. We have the minutes of the 208th Council Meeting on pages 7 – 9. One of the things discussed were members who have recently passed MIAT, congratulations to them all – see page 11.This meeting was held online, over Zoom but I was really pleased to read the Midlands Branch article on pages 23 – 24, about a social event held in person, whilst I think there are some great bonuses to virtual meetings there is also something really good about getting together in the same place. The Council will be holding its fi rst in person meeting for some time in December and, for the fi rst time in a couple of years, so is Congress, see page 10. Another article we have this month comes from the NC3Rs, which is an introduction to their evaluating environmental enrichment online resource for Animal Technologists – see pages 18 – 20. This contains very valuable information about how to construct a solid evaluation of enrichment in a scientifi c way, which is extremely exciting. I also believe this is something that all technologists should get involved in. We are the people who are most likely to be able to observe the animals and really make a difference.Whilst I am thinking about things a little more scientifi c and also close to my heart, the UAR are running another Twitter Event, from Monday 22 to Friday 26 November, this time about the use of fi sh in research. Take a look on Twitter – hashtag FishinResearch. And back to technologists – I hate to point it out, but Christmas is just around the corner and to get us all in the mood, the BING group have produced a Christmas crossword, page 30 – have fun!BulletinJuly 2020• 5Dear ReadersKeep Reading!CaroleKeep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!Keep Reading!PovertyIATLAUNCHESEQUALITYAND DIVERSITYGenderRaceSexual OrientationDiscriminationAgeReligion or BeliefDisabilityEthnicityFairAnti-oppres sive practiceFairYout h WorkSexValuesEmpowermentLegislationDifferenc eSocietyEqualRightsStatusOpportunitiesClassBeliefsEducationNOBODY IS THE SAMEBUT EVERYONE IS EQUALInstitute of Animal TechnologyAdvancing and promoting excellence in the care and welfare of animals in scienceEnsuring policies, procedures and processes don’t discriminateEducation - equal access to opportunitiesCreating an inclusive culture for allwww.iat.org.uk/equalityGROUPJul20:IATB NEW 30/9/20 12:41 Page 5

BulletinNovember 2021 • 7208th Meeting of the Council of the Institute of Animal Technology Held by Zoom on 22nd September 2021 at 13.00 hoursUnderstanding Animal Research updateWendy Jarrett from UAR attended the start of the September Council meeting to give an update on their activities. There are now 128 signatories to the Openness Concordat and all have Openness statements on their websites. One hundred percent are actively pursuing activities and there is an improvement in publicly available information for all organisations.During 2020 it had not been possible to carry out in-person activities, so school visits and talks did not take place. Some virtual events had gone ahead and social media usage had increased. Sixty-three signatories had mentioned animal research on their social media and more information has become available on the public facing sections of websites. Further online tours of facilities have been produced by organisations. The Openness Concordat model is now being reproduced in other countries including Spain, Portugal, Belgium, France, New Zealand and Germany. There are plans to introduce it in the USA and Australia.Veterinary Invertebrate Society (VIS)The VIS is a partner organisation of the IAT and Steve Trim attended to give a brief update on their activities over the past year. The pandemic had curtailed much of the anticipated activity but plans are now being put in place to promote the Society. Steve was very keen to highlight the extent of the VIS work in the sector. A more indepth article on the Society including its aims and focus will be published in a later issue of the Bulletin.
Bulletin8 • November 2021 Handling updateThe NC3Rs had asked the IAT to endorse the use of cupping or tunnel handling methods. Council agreed that it should endorse handling which encourages other methods rather than the mouse tail. If the tail needs to be used, then there must be justification. The IAT Practical Animal Handling & Health Module support notes will be updated accordingly.ASRU Change ProgrammeThe IAT had sent a letter to Baroness Williams outlining concerns with the ASRU Change Programme. No official response has yet been received, although an aknowledgement of receipt has been given. Any response will be conveyed to members via the e-newsletter, Bulletin and website.Apprentice Fair Wage CampaignThe IAT had been asked to sign up to the Apprentice Fair Wage Campaign. Council fully endorsed this and will join the campaign. IAT Education will include this in their policy bank.MIAT ApplicationsThe list of names of those who have applied to be awarded MIAT and FIAT status need to go before IAT Council and are subject to formal election.Applications for MIAT status have been received from:Urszula Karpinska Ania Sobczak Emma Woolgar Emily Clarke Catherine Gillan Jessica Huntley Rosie Keenan Yasmin Laing Council send their congratulations to the successful students and approved these applications. Diplomas will be printed and awarded.IAT CPDThe CPD section of the IAT website has been updated with new information. The system has changed slightly, with RAnTech members now required to gain 50 CPD points. However, the way to achieve these points has also changed, with points no longer being based solely on hours. Full details can be found on the IAT website, and were also published in the October Bulletin.

Bulletin14 • November 2021 This month, the EDI Group is focussing its “Let’s Talk” article on another protected characteristic, AgeLet’s talk about … Age and how we can be more inclusive in the workplace An employee is protected against discrimination because of age. This includes protection against unfair treatment because a job applicant or employee may be: a different age, or in a different age group to another job applicant or employee. Age discrimination is not always about a ‘young person’ being preferred over an ‘old person’ because of their age, which is a common misconception. There are many ways in which age can be discriminated against. It is important to note that there are exceptions when age is not classed as being discriminatory e.g. an under 18 year old being paid less or not being allowed to serve alcohol, etc.Age discrimination, also commonly called ageism, is one of the most common forms of unfair treatment at work, as the age gap between co-workers can be 50 years or more. According to Age UK (https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/work-learning/discrimination-rights/ageism/ageism-at-work/) age discrimination in the workplace can take the form ofl direct discriminationl indirect discrimination l harassmentl victimisation When it is not a legal requirement, age discrimination should be removed from the workplace, and it is a necessity to ensure all workplaces are inclusive resulting in a more positive working environment. It is the responsibility of employers and employees to eliminate age discrimination from the workplace, here are a few examples of discrimination in the workplace.- Training opportunities are offered to younger employees — not older ones. This can include professional training, access to continuing education and conference attendance, etc.- Being given fewer challenging assignments. This may also look like an unfair share of unpleasant or tedious assignments given to older employees.- A spoken or unspoken assumption that you are not entitled to take time off for family commitments, as your family are deemed to be ‘older’.- Derogatory remarks about age. This could be framed as ‘banter’, with others joking about your age, or retirement plans, etc. Or, it could be downright aggressive (e.g. pointed and/or cornering comments that pressure you to retire and free up the position for another professional).- Being passed over for wage increases and promotions.- Being excluded from workplace social events i.e. under 18s not being allowed to go to ‘over 18’ venues, or less mobile elders not being able to part take in vigorous activities. What can I do if I experience age discrimination? If you experience any form of discrimination due to age, consult your company’s Equality and Diversity policy. This will outline what plan of action you can take within your company to address the issue. Directly address any remarks that you may find are discriminatory against you based on age. If after addressing the issue and the situation does not improve, there will be procedures in place within your organisation to escalate the grievance.Let’s talk about ... Agewww.iat.org.ukWhat can an organisation and managers do to prevent age discrimination?- Encourage career development at all ages.- Create an age-positive culture.- Keep all policies up to date and ensure all employees are aware of these.- Ensure there is no segregation based on age.- Reduce age bias at recruitment.- Highlighting discrimination and resolving issues.- Consider flexible working patterns. - Ensure management receive EDI training. How co-workers can be more inclusiveChallenge: if you experience any ageism behaviour, please challenge this, either directly or indirectly to your manager.Educate: each one of us has a commitment to keep up with current information surrounding age discrimination and we should always strive to have the knowledge to enable us to be inclusive. Bulletin18 • November 2021 The ‘Evaluating Environmental Enrichment’ online resource for Animal Technologists Reporter: Khia Dobbinson What is this new online resource? In collaboration with the IAT and RSPCA, the NC3Rs has created an online resource for Animal Technologists carrying out evaluations of environmental enrichment. This was developed with input from Animal Technologist reviewers, who provided insight into the challenges associated with evaluating enrichment in a research environment. The resource was developed with input from Animal Technologist reviewers, who provided insight into the challenges associated with evaluating enrichment in aresearch environment. Covering the process from start to finish, the practical and adaptable time-saving content will walk you through using a scientific approach to validate enrichment for your animals. You can find the online resource here: www.nc3rs.org.uk/EEEWhy evaluate environmental enrichment? The aim of providing environmental enrichment is to improve animal welfare, but many new enrichment products reach the market without any prior evaluation of their success in doing this. Evaluation ensures that the welfare of the animals in your care is improved by the enrichment you provide and can also identify where further improvements can be made. Sometimes unhealthy behaviours (e.g. stereotypies) or health problems (e.g. carrying excessive weight) indicate that the environment is not ideal for the animals. Often, these issues can be addressed with enrichment, but evaluation is necessary to investigate what changes in the environment result in improvements in animal welfare. Even when no ‘problems’ are evident, it is still worthwhile to evaluate enrichment for the species, strain, life stage and group compositions that you are working with, so you can be confident that the enrichment is suitable, safe and provided in sufficient quantities to create an environment that allows the animals to thrive. Where do I start with evaluating enrichment? As with any project, good planning sets you up for success and identifying the ‘who, what, where and when’ of your evaluation should be the first thing you do. Proper planning, before you begin any data collection, canidentify potential problems before they arise. The planning stage is also the right time to have discussions with colleagues and make sure you have everything you need – including permission from the right people, before you get stuck in. Once you begin, having a plan to refer to will keep your project on track and running smoothly. To help you with the planning stage, the resource includes a list of practicalities and other important considerations to think about at the start of an enrichment evaluation. The planning stage is also the right time to have discussions with colleagues and make sure you have everything you need – including permission from the right people, before you get stuck in. Once you begin, having a plan to refer to will keep your project on track and running smoothly. To help you with the planning stage, the resource includes a list of practicalities and other important considerations to think about at the start of an evaluation. These include how you will fit a project of this kind into your schedule, how to search the literature for what is already known about your enrichment and what you can do now, for an easier job later. A project plan sheet is provided for writing or typing out a plan to share with your colleagues. What advice do you have for someone who is not confident with data analysis? It can be easy to ignore analysis until the last minute but it is important to consider what type of data you will collect and what you will do with it, once you have it – at the planning stage of an evaluation. Prior to any data collection, look for others to collaborate with who can help you in this area. Working as a team means that everyone can bring their own strengths to the project but not everyone needs to be involved in every aspect of the evaluation. As with any team, the most important thing is that everyone communicates well with each other. The resource contains step-by-step ‘looking at the data’ walkthroughs, which use Excel to collate, sort and summarise data, as well as creating informative data plots and drawing conclusions from them. This is a great place to start to help you gain confidence in data analysis – you might even begin to enjoy it!Institute ofAnimal Technology
Bulletin20 • November 2021 I have a plan and I am ready to collect data – what’s next? You are ready to set up your evaluation and start collecting data. Setting up enclosures with enrichment and observing your animals can be the most fun stage of an evaluation but if you are not sure where to start it can be somewhat daunting. The resource contains guidance to help you choose a suitable, scientifi capproach to assess whether your enrichment of interest is improving the welfare of your animals. Example study protocols then break down the process into easy-to-follow instructions. The protocols are designed to be adapted for different animals, aims, schedules and levels of investment. What will remain the same is the methodical approach of breaking down the task into manageable steps.I already have experience with carrying our evaluations of enrichment, is there anything in the resource for me?Absolutely! The resource contains ethograms for common laboratory animal species; data collection sheets; suggestions for enrichment items for differentresearch conditions; advice on implementing and sharing your fi ndings; and links to other useful resources. You may also be interested in the section on improving the scientifi c quality of your enrichment study. Even if you already know what experimental bias is and why it is important to minimise it (in any study), it is not always easy to know how to apply this knowledge to an evaluation of enrichment. This section goes beyond simply describing approaches to minimising bias, such as randomisation and blinding but also provides practical suggestions and step-by-step instructions on how to incorporate these concepts into your own evaluation. The guidance within this section of the resource will help improve confi dence in your fi ndings and in the decisions that you make about environmental enrichment and the welfare of your animals. Is there anything else I should know? All that is left to say is that if you want to carry out an evaluation of enrichment using a scientifi c approach, you are more than capable. We hope that this resource helps in the process. If you have any feedback or further questions about technician led evaluations of environmental enrichment, visit the FAQs page www.nc3rs.org.uk/environmental-enrichment-faqs or get in touch with the NC3Rs: tech3rs@nc3rs.org.uk.
BulletinNovember 2021 • 21A tribute toPeter Scobie-TrumperWe were very sorry to learn that Peter Scobie-Trumper died on Thursday 16th September 2021 at the age of 80.Peter had been involved in the laboratory animal industry for many years, starting an apprenticeship in laboratory animal science at the Institute of Cancer Research Fulham in 1956. He stayed at the ICR working as an Animal Technician until 1965 when he left to join Battersea College of Technology as a Senior Technician. When the college moved out of London in 1970 and became the University of Surrey in Guildford, Peter went with them working as Animal Unit Manager until 1987. Peter remained at the University of Surrey until his retirement, teaching and acting as a consultant in laboratory animal science.During the 1970s and 1980s Peter taught on the “LAST” course; an annual six-week course in laboratory animal science and technology for overseas post-graduate students. The course was held at the Laboratory Animal Centre in Carshalton when John Bleby was the director. It was then moved to the University of Surrey where it was organised by Peter. He also taught at Imperial College, lecturing on Home Offi ce requirements and the law. In addition, he lectured extensively overseas. He had many connections within the industry and whenever we mentioned anyone involved in any branch of the laboratory animal world, Peter always said “Oh yes I taught them”. When Surrey Diagnostics was formed Peter was instrumental in getting us accommodation at the University of Surrey and had been involved with the company ever since. He was not a great believer in the concept of retirement and kept working for us until June this year. He was very happy to pass on his knowledge and expertise and many of our members of staff have benefi ted from what he has taught them.Over the years Peter has had a series of major health problems but he always bounced back. This time it was not to be and we will all miss a valued friend and colleague.Andy Dickinson and the team at Surrey Diagnostics

The teeth of rodents grow continually. If malocclusion is not identied and addressed quickly, mice will not be able to eat or drink, which can lead to considerable suering and eventual death.Everyone who works with mice should know how to spot malocclusion and what action to take when malocclusion is suspected or clearly evident. For more information and training resources on malocclusion in mice, visit:Take time to check the teethRodent teeth grow quickly, so a missed diagnosis can rapidly progress into a serious health condition.Know the risksRisk of malocclusion is increased for: Pups around weaning age (2-5 weeks). Irradiated animals and oral tumour models. Genetically predisposed strains and pedigrees. Animals without suitable gnawing enrichment.Spot the signsSigns of malocclusion include: Being smaller and/or thinner than cage/litter mates. Being less active than cage mates. Abnormally shaped nose or face. Hunched posture or abnormal gait.Healthy teeth are straight and aligned. BulletinNovember 2021 • 23 Midlands Branch – September Social Well, the Weather Gods smiled on the Midlands Branch – sending us a beautiful sunny September evening for our first face-to-face event in over 18 months. Our hosts for the evening were Envigo at their Hillcrest site who supported the event with facility tours and very importantly, the street food van. The tours allowed technicians who normally only work with rodents to see how some other species are cared for and housed. With nearly 80 people attending the event a lot of time was spent catching up with friends and colleagues face-to-face in the sunny outdoors rather than through a Zoom or Teams meeting. The inflatablesAs well as the educational tours, there was great fun and laughter on the inflatables including the bucking bronco, gladiators and bungee run with a prize for the longest survivor clinging onto the bronco.Together with the queue at the fantastic street food van, the ice cream van proved a massive hit.The Branch also supported the poster session with first place going to Micah from Warwick and runner up to Alison from Nottingham – both going home with bottles of prosecco. We are very grateful to all our trade colleagues from Tecniplast, Sychem, Datesand, Street food van
