YAAKOV’S DUAL MESSAGE 4:01 PM November 19, 2021 ט“פשת ולסכ ו‘ב חלשיו תשרפ Nov 25-28 -Thanksgiving break, No school Nov 29 - Dec 1 - Chanukah 4PM dismissal for 6-8B Dec 2 - beginning of Chanukah break. 11:50 AM - dismissal for Hamilton, 12:00 noon - for Williston Dec 3-6 - Chanukah break, No school Dear Parents, The possuk in this week’s parsha states: ׳וכו רומח רוש יל יהיו ...התע דע רחאו יתרג ןבל םע “I sojourned with Lavan and stayed there until now…and I acquired a donkey and an ox etc.” Yaakov sends a message of peace and reconciliation to his brother ושע. Rashi offers two explanations for the phrase יתרג ןבל םע. The first explanation focuses on the word יתרג. Yaakov was hinting to Eisav that although he stayed with Lavan for twenty years, he always remained a רג, a stranger. He was considered an outsider with no significant standing. The bracha of Yitzchak of ךיחאל ריבג יוה, you will be a master over your brother was clearly not fulfilled. This was a message of reconciliation. The second explanation provided by Rashi has a different message. Yaakov was hinting to Eisav, I lived with Lavan, יתרמש תווצמ ג״ירתו, yet I never deviated from any of the 613 mitzvos. The numerical value of יתרג is 613, ג״ירת. Yaakov was cautioning Eisav that it would not be worthwhile to start up with him. Similarly, further on in the Parsha, Yaakov tells Eisav רומחו רוש יל יהיו. Here too, there was a two sided message. Rashi comments that Yaakov mentioned his livestock acquisition to highlight to Eisav that his success was only in the area of livestock, not the agriculture successes promised in Yitzchak’s brachos, a message of reconciliation. However, the Medrash writes that רוש is referring to Yosef, רוש רוכב, and רומח to Yissachar. Again, the message here is cautionary. Beware of confronting Yaakov as he has Yosef and Yissachar accompanying him. How do we understand this dual message? Did Eisav truly decipher the gematria of יתרג and understand the deeper meaning offered by the medrash? The Mefarshim answer that the confrontation with Eisav was fought on two planes: the physical meeting with Yaakov and Eisav and the spiritual struggle with the ושע לש ורש. Yaakov was therefore battling Eisav from two angles, each of which required a different approach. Regarding Eisav himself, the message was the simple meaning of the pesukim, conciliatory in nature. Regarding the ךאלמ of Eisav, Yaakov sends a message that he is ready to fight, fortified by his performance of mitzvos as well as the prominent personalities that he has with him. In a spiritual battle, there is no room for reconciliation. ! תבש טוג Rabbi Ochs In parsha this week, PreK1 learned how Yaakov davened and then used their own siddurim to daven. For F week and their unit on neighborhood, the PreKers visited the Chestnut Hill Avenue fire station. The discussion about fire safety is also a part of their Chanukah preparation. Mrs. Burger, Libi Riesel’s (K2) bubby, visited the Kindergarten classes and presented “the science of light” to our younger students. 4B focused on the melacha of bishul in this week’s lamed tes melachos unit. Dr. Burger presented a "Science is Fun" program for his grandson Moshe Aryeh Riesel’s 6B STEM class on Friday. Mrs. Kaplinsky held a workshop for 1G and 2G on “communicate and adjust” for the areas of kindness and healthy communication. Mrs. Fontek’s grade 2 girls enjoyed creating a yummy parsha “keshes” project. The project was made of marshallow “paste” and colored oat cereal. The girls in 4G enjoyed making their own electromagnets. 5G students studied for their Chumash test using an interactive and fun game. Thank you to Mr. Ben Bressel for teaching a handyman class as part of our middle school electives. Next bulletin will be on December 10.
