November 18, 2022ג״פשת ןושח ד’’כאריו תשרפ TRANSCEND4:01 PMDear Parents,ירחא השאה ךלת אל ילא ינדא לא רמאוI said to my master: Perhaps the woman will not come back with me.Rashi notes that the word ילא – perhaps – is written without its usual ‘ו`. He explains that the omission hints to an ulterior motive of Eliezer’s. Eliezer wanted Yitzchak to marry his daughter. The word ילוא minus its vav can also be ei-lai – to me. Eliezer was hoping that Yitzchak would come to his family as a son-in-law.Avraham however, did not want Yitzchak marrying Eliezer’s daughter. Yitzchak was ךורב, while Eliezer’s daughter, as a descendant of םח, was cursed. An רורא cannot marry a ךורב.The story of Eliezer is written twice in the Torah. Once, as it happened, and a second time when Eliezer was retelling the chain of events to Besuel. The Torah only hints to Eliezer’s motives during the second recital. Why?Rav Schwab ל״צז explains that initially when Eliezer posed his question to Avraham, his motive was not apparent, because he perhaps was making a legitimate point. What would he do if the woman refused to accompany him back to Canaan? However, after having seen how Hashem paved his way so clearly and miraculously there no longer should have been any doubt that Rivka would refuse to return with him. At that point, he should have abandoned his personal dream. Yet, in the repetition he still recounted his question concerning what should be done if the woman refuses to accompany him. In a way, he was giving Besuel and Lavan an opening to reject the shidduch. Consequently, the word ילא is written minus its vav indicating the bit of self-aggrandization.This may also help shed light on Eliezer’s רורא status. Someone who is ךורב can transcend his personal biases and move beyond his ego in order to act in accordance with Hashem’s will. He able to remove all obstacles that stand between him and his growth in ׳ה תדובע.Thank you to all those who participated in our campaign.
