November 11, 2022ג״פשת ןושח ז’’יאריו תשרפ OUR DNA4:08 PMDear Parents,וידחי םהינש וכליוRav Chaim Volozhiner ztz”l, in his שוריפ on Pirkei Avos, comments that the stories in Sefer Bereishis are not just simple narratives. They are a description and an account of the formation of a specific inherent characteristic of Klal Yisrael. The תודימ that the Avos displayed and perfected became embedded in our DNA. The ability of Yidden throughout the תורוד to be רסומ שפנ for טייקשידיא is derived from Avraham Avinu’s willingness to be cast into the שאה ןשבכ rather than serve Avodah Zara. The ability of Yidden through the millennium to endure unimaginable hardships to fulfill the mitzvah of לארשי ץרא בושי is derived from וניבא םהרבא’s instant obedience to the command of ךל ךל. This concept is termed םינבל ןמיס תובא השעמ. In this vein, the Chasam Sofer explains that a Yid’s ability to trust implicitly in םימכח stems from וניבא קחצי at the הדיקע. Avraham had a direct communication from Hashem to sacrifice his son at the Akeidah. Yitzchak never heard this command from Hashem. He had to exercise the middah of םימכח תנומא and be willing to be sacrificed even though he had never heard that directive from Hashem Himself – only through Avraham. He thereby inoculated the ability to have complete הנומא in our םימכח into our DNA. The Chasam Sofer adds that it is for this reason the ןויסנ of the הדיקע is referred to as קחצי תדיקע, not Avraham, because in a sense the nisayon was more difficult for Yitzchak than for Avraham.
